Baros - Class act

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Baros has pace and flair, and to add to that superb placement of the ball. The goal against leeds was an example of his incredible potential. I hope that houllier will partner him with owen and kick heskey out. If he does that, liverpool has a good chance of getting the coveted fourth place.
the best is yet to come..

Now Stu, hold your horses. Baros is still unproven, although every time he plays he looks like a good player. He has been unfortunate with injury this season and chances are that if he gets a good run in the side he will deliver the goods.

All the same, he has scored only a handful of goals for us since he came in late 2001, so its early days yet.

Houllier is not a rubbish manager. He is a decent manager who brought Liverpool as far as he could in 2002 and since then some of his ideas backfired and its slipping away from him now.

He has made some decent buys: Hyppia, Baros and Hamman, but for every Milan Baros there is a Vladimir Smicer and Igor Biscan.

was thinking the same thing... shilton change it lad :D

JBG... Smicer isn't and never will be a bad signing. He's a decent player who'd get into most sides in europe and clearly has good ability. He has played well this season aswell and to be honest the season where we finished second he played well aswell. For £4.5m i don't see how you can say he was a bad signing.... he's a good squad player.

End of.

I agree Houllier has made mistakes... i'm not blind. But when spending upto about £5m on a player you are taking a risk. They aren't going to be the finished article and on a couple of accasions he's got it wrong... as has Ferguson. s##t happens.

Look at his good signings tho... Babbel, McAllister, Kewell, Baros, Henchoz.... how much for those players?

Look at how much our current first 11 cost...

Baros Owen
Kewell Hamann Gerrard Murphy
Carragher Hyypia Henchoz Finnan
Kirkland

He's done some great stuff aswell.

Have to disagree about Smicer Stu.

I see your point about him playing well (in patches) this season, but when did he last pull on the shirt?

I have spent most of the last couple of years sitting in the stand watching Smicer constantly give the ball away looking anaemic. He's better now than when he first joined, but I simply don't rate him.

I agree with Stu that MAYBE we should consider keeping him as a squad player but there were times when he was keeping plenty of better players out of the first team.

In 2002 he played a lot in the hole and out wide. In my opinion Litmannen would have been a better bet in either position, but Houllier always picked Smicer ahead of him.  ???

I think Smicer is a decent player down the middle, but to be Honest he isn't cut out for the phyiscal nature of the Premership. Houllier should try to refresh his squad a bit, by letting players like Smicer go.

And I don't think Baros is that raw, he looks like a relatively mature striker. Now Pongolle is raw.

A free role might suit Smicer but he really doesn't do it often enough. Can anyone remind me the game in Europe (vs some greek side?) where he missed a ton of chances...?

I'm not saying he's a genius.

I'm not saying he's top class. But he's a good player. He would improve every team outside the top 5 in the league and he has an international record that shows he can perform.

He is a good player who adds depth to the squad. Whats the point in selling him? If we get stupid injuries again next season i'd rather see him in there than be forced to play someone out of position.

I have to agree with stu on this one;Smicer is one of the few players who has the ability to control the ball immediately and was playing particularly well at the start of the season. He has been very unlucky with injuries and youth is not on his side but I think he can still be an asset to the squad.
