there is internationals in a couple of weeks also and you'd expect he will play every minute of those 
i agree he needs less minutes but unless he picks up a knock, rodgers wont bench him.

i agree he needs less minutes but unless he picks up a knock, rodgers wont bench him.

It seems increasingly likely mate ,because I seriously cant believe the manager hasn't noticed which parts of our game our stagnating ,and the key
components that are going missing on regular occasions.

Mascherano and Gerrard in a two isn't a great option at all. Neither are tacitcally superb and neither of them know how to dicate a game use intelligence. Also technically its not good enough in terms of  use  of the  ball, touch and weight of passes. We conceed far to much possession from those two to be a CONSISTENTLY effective pairing.

Gerrard has been a Titan for so long. He's practically dragged us through the last decade. He's suffered injuries in his career that must take their toll. But at the same time, he's an incredible athlete, a natural who must always give his all. He's also very honest and of course loves the club with all his heart. If he felt he wasn't playing well, he'd be the first to hold up his hands.

But athletes don't hit a sudden point that reduces their energy levels unless the body isn't allowed to recover. It slows down, recovery times are slower, muscles ache more, but everything should be just as strong as it was.

I think Gerrard is emotionally and mentally exhausted. It's almost like he geared himself up for this season thinking it's maybe his last chance. Perhaps now he's seen our performances, and the quality he's working with and realised...not this year. And probably not next either.

Perhaps the fact that he's not going to retire with a PL winners medal has finally dawned on him. People are talking like he's knackered, but as a player and character, he's still our major hope. For all the skill of Suarez, and the work rate of Lucas, only Gerrard knows what the PL means to the Kop. Sat there himself as a kid.

Gerrard has suffered a lot if injuries over the last ten years and they will be having an effect on his stamina and fitness. Also his age will have an effect on his stamina

He has been played to death by both his country and club over the last 14 years and has played through injuries - because he was so important he was constantly played regardless of his fitness. He hasn't been managed in the same way as someone like Giggs.

Gerrard is on the downward spiral and the game is taking its toll on him - he isn't 25 anymore and he shouldn't/can't play at 100% for 90 mins every single match for both club and country. He could prolong his career by retiring from Inty football but he won't

He should be fine playing 90 to 120 mins a week. I'd think 180 mins is too much. But BR has him in a special programme which he clearly has a lot of faith in to allow Gerrard to be used this way. Maybe that's what's effecting him? The main thing I've seen missing from Gerrard is his influence. He's the captain. People have claimed he's letting Lucas down, but I don't agree. Gerrard is captain and playmaker, so others like Lucas SHOULD be busting a gut to allow him to play his game. You accodate playmakers, not ball winners. If Gerrard goes missing, we should be able to trust others to cover him. Heck, he's covered everyone else for long enough.

I think he'll announce International retirement after that and unless Rodgers (or whoever our manager may be at that time) can find or accommodate him in a role where he can still shine I'd expect him to leave the stage in 2015.

Personally I don't see any reason why Gerrard couldn't perform the old Xabi Alonso role. Temperament aside I don't think Alonso had anything that Stevie doesn't still have, apart from maybe the legs, not that Alonso was ever the quickest around the park.

Agreed on the Alonso role. I thought he was going that way anyway. In the first few games he was playing deeper and pinging the ball around. He looked good there.

Then again, I'd have done all I could to bring Xabi himself back. He'd be a massive boost in all departments of the club.

I didn't assess either as an individual in that particular case, it was assessed as a partnership.

Agree and disagree with you Woof.

Xabi's game intelligence (reading of the game, positioning and decision making) were far better than Stevies, Stevie is good in these area's without being exceptional. However, he can perform this role to a decent standard still. If he had a better player next to him, he wouldn't look so exposed all the time. To be fair though, Steven ALWAYS has a bad start to seasons (apart from when in his absolute peak) I think when Suarez returns every week and Coutinho's in the side he'll look a far better player for it.
