I think it was mentioned somewhere that one of the main reason a deal couldn't be concluded was because of "non-footballing" reason -- i.e MONEY!!!

I have to say that Spurs have upgraded their squad pretty impressively and that Chelsea hijacking this deal can only be indirectly good for us, but of course they have Bale's money to invest and Levy is a shrewd negotiator and managed to squeeze out every last penny from Real...imagine if they were to have Ayre in charge, Bale would have been out of the door for half that amount!

Unfortunately for us to invest heavily in squad improvement will mean Suarez leaving...don't see FSG coming out with 50~100 million to improve the team. Anyone who thinks money grows on tree and that we should go out and buy any and every big name is just plain delusional. Blaming FSG is no use...might as well blame your parents for not being rich enough for you to buy up the club, splash a couple of hundred of millions and make us all happy. Until then no point with all the bit-ching in front of your screen when it's not your own money! Of course if we were sold to the DIC years ago, then we will be in happy land huh?

I feel sorry for Rodgers.

That's Rodgers letting the fan base know that this failing deal isn't his fault and he's clearly letting it be known who made the call on this deal.

I think he wants best for the team. He's not, or shouldn't be FSG's scapegoat, I believe he shares the same vision as the fans do, not sure about the owners though. 

Respect gained for BR after yesterday - if the owners won't back him then he is going to have to work miracles

The transfer window really seems to highlight 2 issues

1)  The Owners are reluctant to spend the money required to bring in quality players.  Even when the committee identify a player as a perfect fit. 

Surely if the committee identify a perfect fit type player we should be doing all we can to bring that player to the club.  This is the first time Rodgers has spoken out about it but I feel its not the first time that "non footballing reasons" have prevented transfers. 

2)  Our reputation as a top club is completely shot.  A season or 2 back when Suarez signed we were seen as a club looking to bounce straight back into the top 4 and CL after previous poor ownership.  Now players probably look at us and see that we've missed out for 4 years now and our top player wants out and our captain is a season or 2 away from retirement. 

The potential biggest problem and my biggest fear is that next season we will sell Suarez for 50M and when we try to reinvest the money we may find that not too many quality players will be wanting to sign for us. 

Last Decemeber Gerrard said we needed to bring in proven quality.  Carra has said that we probably won't challenge for top 4 without 1 or 2 additons and now Rodgers is saying the same thing.  We need at least 2 good players in the next 10 days or we'll have to pray for a miracle from Rodgers if we want top 4.

The owners spent £41m net last year and over £35m net the previous year. That's not actually chicken fee and I accept that it is nowhere near what the richest clubs can afford to spend. So far this year we are showing a £5m net gain on transfers and that seriously fails to  demonstrate our commitment towards achieving success. There are still 10 days before the end of the transfer period and as yet I haven't thrown my toys out of the window. Let's just say I'm standing on the ledge........ Supporting LFC can be frustrating but I have no intention of becoming a moaning whinge bag and behaving like a spoilt child who can't get his own way !!!

We've also gotten rid of every player for one reason or another that had a big salary.  (Reina, Carra, Kuyt, Cole etc)
And we should have more TV money this year.  (other lower teams seem to have a bit to spend).

Im on the ledge too.  Don't quite know whether we're going to sign a player or two and kick on a bit this season or whether we'll end up scrapping with Everton, Swansea etc for 6th / 7th

On the other hand though, Rodgers says that Willian would have been perfect for us. So he's telling the owners that he's found his perfect player, but the owners don't back him up? Even though in my opinion Rodgers is wrong about Willian, it's not a good sign when he tells the owners that Willian is the perfect player but the owners still don't want to spend the money.

You have to understand the owners though, it's not like they haven't spend 80 million on players since they took over the club! I believe that the big money signing we're awaiting will be the last signing the owners are willing to pay big money for, until we get back to the CL at least. So we should understand if they're being cautious.

Need to consider that while we might try and throw Big $$ at players they would probably prefer playing for a CL team or a London Based team then coming to Anfield. A lot of the arguments here are just speculation and frustration over circumstances we don't have direct exposure too.

I don't mind losing a bidding war to a CL team or a filthy rich team ,this is how it is this days. We need to prove our worth both on the field and in the scouting/negotiation table.

i dont understand them at all because they dont act like owners of one of the biggest football institutions in the world.
they have increased comercial revenue and shredded the wage bill since they have come in so that 80 mil you refer too isnt really so spectacular. we also have increased revenue from a new tv deal so where is the money going ?.
the current philosophy seems to be about robbing peter to pay paul!!
i fully understand we cannot fill the team full of 30mil+ players but surely we can do better that what we are currently doing.

They actually made a loss of over £50m in their first years trading. That is a meaningful sum of money and a lousy return on an investment of £300m. If they want LFC to be self sustainable then the money isn't going to just magically appear. We could go down the route of massive debt but that also has its obvious problems. You only have to rewind to the days of H & G to recognise what a disaster that can be. We are not owned by a company that has endless amounts of money and anybody expecting  Henry to use his own money is being deluded. He worked very hard to achieve his success so why should he watch his personal fortune potentially disappear by investing in a football club.

It's not really fair from us to not consider the money the owners have spent so far. 80 million is actually a lot of money. Spurs and Arsenal have spent less than that in the same period.

Or the owners could spend their own money and trust their manager and their transfer committee when they identify players. They can get people in positions with a football mentality and know the game inside and out.

John Henry recently just spent £70mil on a newspaper. The club isn't their number one priority - it isn't their only focus , we do not have the owners full attention and it shows.

Owners buy football clubs and spend their own money - looking to improve the standard of the club they own , looking to get the club playing in the top competitions.

We are the 9th richest club in the world - turnover of over £200mil a year ( more than Spurs and City ) , we have just got an increase in television money and so far we have made a profit in the transfer market.

It's not really fair from us to not consider the money the owners have spent so far. 80 million is actually a lot of money. Spurs and Arsenal have spent less than that in the same period.

That's the figure that Spurs have spent in the last three windows - that is possibly going to be increased by another £30mil.

If you look at it like that then we've spent 80 million in the last 3 transfer windows. But you can't look at it like that. Last summer they sold Modric, Van der Vaart, Kranjcar, Corluka etc so they had a lot of money from player sales. They've apparently even made a profit last season too, and have been making a profit for a few seasons now. So it's natural that they have more money to spend at the moment, since in net they have spent far less. And I'll say it again, they haven't even sold Bale yet. They have more money than we do Benny, get over it.
