Aurelio eyes new deal

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Brazilian enjoying life on Merseyside - SSN 15th October 2009

Liverpool full-back Fabio Aurelio is keen to start talks on a new contract at Anfield.

The 30-year-old Brazilian, who signed for the Reds on a free transfer from Valencia in 2006, has a current deal that is due to expire next summer, but he wants to extend his stay on Merseyside.

Aurelio has made 92 appearances for Liverpool since his move three years ago, and is hoping he can finally get a run of first-team starts together after a series of injuries have hampered his progress in recent seasons.

"We had started talking before the end of last season but then I picked up the injury in the summer and since then there has not been any more contact," he told the Liverpool Echo.

"I just want to play at the minute before I think about anything else and we will see how everything goes from there.

"Every season I have felt more and more comfortable here and I have many good team-mates - this feels as if it is my home.

"I feel very comfortable and my family is very settled here but I know that it all depends on what the manager and the club thinks about me.

"I enjoy the city and the life that I have here and that is why it has felt like the time that I have been here has gone so fast.

"I'm really enjoying it; when you are settled and you are comfortable, that is all you want and that is why I would like to stay here if I can."

Liverpool will be looking to kick-start their Premier League campaign when they travel to the Stadium of Light on Saturday to face in-form Sunderland.

he's a handy squad player and worth a 1 year extension. problem lies with his fitness tho and he struggles to play 3 games in a row

Insua is the future but it would still be good to have Fabio as backup.

pay as you play contract............................. :D (I'm not serious for those thinking I might be, if we tried signing anyone with his injury history there'd be bleats to that effect I'm sure)

I'm gobsmacked we've not extended his contract before now, it's very rare to let a player in your first team plans to run his contract down to anywhere near one year. Normally the contracts are extended when they get down to about two years, at least that's the impression I get when I read stories on the subject.

Good squad player, unfortunately how much use are players who spend as much time or more injured as in the starting XI? It's not quite as bad as the Agger situation, but as worrying

with his injury record i am not surprised to see he hasn't been given a new deal. Offer him the same wage and a 12 month extension.

He may well decide to leave on a free if we do that, chance a longer contract elsewhere

he's 30, and made from glass. He'll be lucky to find another top side to take him on long term.

But if he did i wouldn't hold it against him. He's been a useful squad player, nothing else.

I didn't say it would be with a top side, best financial deal might suit him better and I'm sure there are plenty of wannabe clubs that would try and snap him up

I'm not surprised he's enjoying life on Merseyside, must be great just lying around on a physio's bench all day long. As you all say he's a useful squad player but not much more really.

Aurelio is one of our best players - I'm fairly confident he doesn't get injured for the sake of it and is even more frustrated than the most vocal of his doubters by his long spells with the physio.

It would be madness to let him leave.

yeah but when you consider the fact that we have him and degen on the flanks of defense, the issue is

1) waste of wages when they hardly play, regardless of their potential which depreciates considering age, in aurelio's case

2) prevents a youth player from stepping up. for example, selling warnock wasnt the smartest decision imo.

At present, if he's fully fit, he's our best left back so we'd be silly to dismiss him as a squad player. Like Kewell (the newkit member), I'd go in for a 12 month extension given his age and injury record. If he doesn't accept then nay bother, we've got Dossena.

Agree.

He's well worth it despite his injury records. To get another back-up would cost the earth at present market conditions.

Having said that, we do need another left back.... not as a back-up but a 1st teamer. I like Insua and he's a more than tidy player..... but long term, we need a wee bit more quality. Quality that Aurelio can supply when fit.
