Benayoun - Rate him or not?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

He's in a better team now but he's not as effective as he was a W Ham!
The reason is simple to me,he's not getting enough time on the pitch to gather any sort of form. When he is brought on with 20 mins to go as well it's hard to influence games(as it is for most subs). There are the few players in football that seem to produce their best coming off the bench but those are few and far between. The reality is we have not seen him "in form" because he has not been able to get any form going, but he's not good enough to start every game either so its a catch 22 situation.

He's certainly not shi'te as some would suggest on here.I'd keep him as he is versatile and could do a decent job anywhere in MF if we had someone injured for any period of time.
One of our better "squad players" IMO!

I don't especially rate him but if he is happy to warm the bench and play a bit part role then I guess he is worth keeping.

He's yet another player who's effectively being asked to play out of position. He's never a wide player in a million years. Ask any West Ham where he was most effective and they'll tell you it was when he effectively had a free role between the midfield and attack. If you watch the 2006 FA Cup final again the guy absolutely ran the show for West Ham and effectively sealed his move to us with that performance.

He's also one of the few players we have who can create something out of nothing, for example making Torres equaliser at the Bridge last season so I'd keep him in January as we aren't exactly overloaded with players who can create something.

Exactly. People want to sell the likes of Lucas, Pennant, Benayoun etc because they don't rate them and then buy some quality with what pennies we might raise without taking large chunks out of the squad in the process. Benayoun is nowhere near a best XI player, but he can come in and do a job. If we sold three, four or even five fringe players we'd struggle to raise more than £12m-£15m and might buy one quality player. We'd then be thin in numbers, the 'quality player' might be an expensive flop and we'll be short of options let alone quality ones.

I would like to see Benayoun play a role like you mention, however with Gerrard in the side he is unlikely to get more than cameo sub appearances and/or shoved out wide. I honestly think the squad has been bled of sellable assets, to the point at which we will need money from the owners to supplement any sales.

New faces : N'Gog, Dossena, Keane, Cavalieri, Degen, Riera

Stars : Reina, Gerrard, Kuyt, Mascherano, Torres, Carragher, Skrtel

Regular-ish/solid : Alonso, Arbeloa, Agger, Aurelio, Babel

Back-up/reserves : Hyypia, Pennant, Lucas, Benayoun, El Zhar, Plessis, Itandje

DISCLAIMER : this is for demonstration only, whether people agree with each and every of MY classifications I couldn't care less.

That's pretty thin as it is, the back-up/reserves wouldn't fetch a lot. Maybe £5m optimistically for any of the players on a good day, but would anyone reckon we'd get more than one or two quality players if we sold the lot? That would leave us with a pretty small squad, it's not exactly overflowing as it is. The squad on PES for Liverpool starts at 22 players, although it doesn't include N'Gog or Riera of the more obvious 1st team squad.
Never buy from PC World, product quality is poor and their 'customer service' is even poorer

I like Yossi, but as said earlier he aint a wide player. A handy player to bring on, or have play when Riera or Kuyt is unavailable.

As for the strength in depth thang, I dont think we have the wage structure to cope with the wage demands of a rather increased squad strength, like everything its money. Better the player the more he wants to see unfortunately be it playing time or wages.

Frustrated Yossi warns Benitez: I'll quit Anfield if you don't need me

Yossi Benayoun has revealed for the first time that he will quit Anfield in the New Year if he is still on the fringes of Rafa Benitez's squad.
Liverpool's £6million signing from West Ham has always insisted he is happy to stay and fight for a place in Benitez's starting line-up, despite strong interest from Ajax, Spartak Moscow and Manchester City in recent months.
But, as he prepared for Israel's Tel Aviv meeting with the Ivory Coast, he admitted he was running out of patience and ready to push for a move - abroad, if need be - when the January window opens.

Offski? Liverpool midfielder Yossi Benayoun is getting tired of playing the Anfield waiting game and the Israeli has hinted he leave to play in France or even Russia

'If the situation remains the same over the next few months, and I'm not getting more time in the middle, I will not want to continue as a Liverpool player,' he told Israel's Channel Five TV station. 'The fact that I have spent so much time on the bench, while there has been a winning formula on the pitch, tells you everything.

'I hope it changes for me, because I want to stay and prove myself, but it won't be easy. I know I'm at one of the biggest clubs in the world, and that there are many good players like Ryan Babel and Jermaine Pennant who sometimes aren't even in the squad, but it's not much fun sitting on the bench all the time.
Talented squad: Boss Rafa has a wealth of talented midfielders - but this glut of talent is taking its toll on Benayoun

'I always wanted to prove myself good enough for Liverpool, and I thought I did well last season to contribute so many goals and assists. But there seems to be more competition for places this time, and if I continue to be on the sidelines, I would not want to stay, even though it is Liverpool.
'Maybe I will have to accept that and start learning another language, such as Italian or French or even Russian

I don't mind him coming ut with this to be honest.

The lad wants to play and fair enough - he's not happy to sit on the bench and take his money like other players we have had before (cough, Harry Kewell, cough).  At least he's being honest.  He hasn't slated the club, Benitez or his team mates - he's basically said that he's done his best to make himself a regular but isn't quite good enough.  He's also 29, so you can understand him wanting to play regularly when he should be at his peak.

I'd be happy to keep him as a squad player, but if he wants to go then fine.  I won't blame him.

I dont agree John. We need a degree of maturity from the squad, the Rafalution is moving forward, we are putting together a serious title challenge with the club evolving into a new era of strength domestically and within europe. A lot of work has gone into achieving our current success and these two young lads (Babel 21) start whinging?

Its not only that they´re not good enough for a regular first team place, but their not mature enough either.

Rafa is building a dynesty here, if these lads dont want to be part of it kick them out and get some proper men in.

Benayoun threatens to leave Reds

Benayoun scored 11 goals for Liverpool last season
Liverpool midfielder Yossi Benayoun has threatened to leave after becoming frustrated at manager Rafa Benitez's policy of using him as a substitute.

The 28-year-old, who joined from West Ham for £5m in 2007, has made just four starts in 11 appearances this season.

Benayoun told Israel's Channel Five TV: "If the situation remains the same over the next few months, I will not want to continue as a Liverpool player.

"I hope it changes as I want to stay and prove myself but it won't be easy."

Benayoun made his name at Israeli side Maccabi Haifa and Spanish outfit Racing Santander before moving to West Ham in 2005.

He switched to Anfield in 2007 and resisted a move away this summer despite interest from Italian side Roma and Dutch giants Ajax.  606: DEABTE
While I symphathise with him I am totally disappointed that he is speaking to the press - he cannot hold the club to ransom

The Israeli international has made 41 appearances for Liverpool but he fears that his playing time will remain restricted following the team's good start to the season.

The Reds are joint top of the Premier League with Chelsea, having lost only once, picking up 32 points out of a possible 39.

"The fact that I have spent so much time on the bench, while there has been a winning formula on the pitch, tells you everything," added Benayoun.

"I know I'm at one of the biggest clubs in the world, and that there are many good players like Ryan Babel and Jermaine Pennant who sometimes aren't even in the squad, but it's not much fun sitting on the bench all the time.

"I always wanted to prove myself good enough for Liverpool, and I thought I did well last season to contribute so many goals and assists.

"But there seems to be more competition for places this time, and if I continue to be on the sidelines, I would not want to stay, even though it is Liverpool.

"Maybe I will have to accept that and start learning another language, such as Italian or French or even Russian."

I don't think he has shown (or been allowed to show?) enough for us to be concerned. While I consider him better than Pennant, he is not a player I particularly appreciate, he's not a winger , not strong enough to play midfield and as a support striker hangs on to the ball much too long and runs into dead ends more often than not. Tricky and no doubt talented I could never see him getting a regular place in the team.

If we get an offer of around £5 to £7million I would take it. The odd moment of individual brilliance is more often than not at the cost of width, and frustration for the rest of the game, and he is just not good enough consistantly for a team with title ambitions. As a squad player he is adequate, but if he's not happy with that ..... bye bye and don't let the door hit you on the way out.

I think Yossi's an above average player that tries to do well, but he's not as good as I suspect he thinks he is.

But he, like Babel, is wasted at Anfield because he doesn't get games and his career is better off elsewhere. I doubt he transfered from West Ham to sit on Liverpool's bench.

Liverpool just don't need Benayoon in today's lineup and he'll always be a sub, not a starter.

This though, like the Babel interview, is a bad affair. Players just shouldn't be bitching about the club and their present circumstance to the press even if they do have legitimate peevs like Ryan and Yossi. It's bad form.
