Deco 8M, Barry 18M, mmmm no wonder they talk about English players not getting a chance they are so overpriced.

Deco is already what 30 or 31? Secondly he's a class player but he's VERY inconsistent and compared to barry in terms of consistency barry would come out a clear winner but in terms of passing when deco is in form , he is superb .

Tell Villa to :censored: off. If they're not prepared to accept 15 million then we should just leave it, it's not like we're losing out by keeping Alonso is it? Alls it means is they're left with their captain who doesn't want to be there, a manager who doesn't want him, fans who now can't wait to see the back of the player. So that means Barry plays less next year and they end up flogging him for a cut down 8 million next summer to another mid table side (City, Newcastle, Spurs or Boro) Let them have an unhappy player because the fella isn't worth 15 million never mind 18.

Aston Villa ready to do Gareth Barry business after Steve Finnan sweetenerPeter Lansley
Martin O’Neill is ready to accept Liverpool’s £15 million offer for Gareth Barry now that Steve Finnan has been offered in a part-exchange deal. As Barry, the England midfield player, was expressing his disappointment at the controversial nature of his departure from Aston Villa, the manager was preparing to sign Steve Sidwell as a midfield replacement.

Sidwell is due to have talks with Luiz Felipe Scolari over the next 24 hours, when it is believed that the new Chelsea manager will confirm that the midfield player, signed from Reading on a free transfer last summer, will be told that he can join Villa for £5 million.

Villa head to Switzerland on a two-match tour today, with Barry left at home after being banned from preseason training in the wake of a critical interview in a Sunday newspaper that has left him as public enemy No 1.

Martin Laursen, the leading candidate to succeed Barry as Villa captain, has been on the phone to his friend. “I have spoken to him,” the Denmark defender said at the launch of Villa’s new kit yesterday. “He’s not happy with that [being cast as the villain]. I understand supporters want to keep their best player, but I hope that they can remember all he’s done for the club.

“We’re talking about a guy who’s played here for ten years, become the youngest player to play 300 Premier League games, been our captain, done so many good things for the club. I’m sad that the fans are angry with him now and they should remember what he has done for this club.”

The £10 million sale of Peter Crouch by Liverpool to Portsmouth means that Villa can expect to receive half the fee for Barry up front, with half to follow in 12 months, while O’Neill will be delighted to acquire Finnan after being without a recognised right back last season. Liverpool will also pay add-ons if Barry wins the Champions League with them.

Laursen rates Barry highly but does not believe that he is irreplaceable. “Obviously, it’s a big loss,” he said. “He was a very good player, a nice guy, a good captain, but there are a lot of players who can do as good a job as he can. I’m sure we can bring in a player who is as good as Gareth...

We'd be more likely to get Kaka, because Milan like defenders in their 30s so they'd snap our hands off for Finnan

I will probably get crucified but I say let Finnan go. It would be a good move for him, he has been a loyal servant but his legs are deffo going. O'Neil will help him prolong his career a few more seasons, and he deserves a bit better than to warm our bench.

15 million + Finnan for Barry?

I say do it, Barry has been consistently Villas' best player over the last few seasons. They havn't really struggled considering there position over the last few seasons getting Uefa football and the like. He would be able to make the step up and he knows the prem and has a strong mental attitude in his game. Ideal for a team trying to make that last step towards the league.

I would prefer him over some rated european player, he is expensive yes but he is a consistent and powerful player in my eyes.

Lets get it done, would be good in the dressing room aswell I reckon.

Barry John mate, the greatest rugby player ever.   Hits a mean free kick from 35 yards out.

agree with hello_red i think its a good deal & with alonso looking like staying now its looking great

take off the  sale of crouch & le tallec then id say we still have most of the 30 mill budget 2 buy a classy winger & striker (persuming we have a 30 mill budget :) )

Silva & keane spring 2 mind

i think it could be done with more wheeling & dealing
