I like the wheeling and dealing.

I think it's more satisfying than some :censored: just giving us a big chunk of money and saying "here, go play!"

Clear out the dead wood and bring in some quality.

I say do it, Barry has been consistently Villas' best player over the last few seasons. They havn't really struggled considering there position over the last few seasons getting Uefa football and the like. He would be able to make the step up and he knows the prem and has a strong mental attitude in his game. Ideal for a team trying to make that last step towards the league.

I would prefer him over some rated european player, he is expensive yes but he is a consistent and powerful player in my eyes.

Lets get it done, would be good in the dressing room aswell I reckon.

I don't know. I watched the Arsenal/Villa game from the first half of the season and he played so poorly. I don't want to judge him on a single game, especially when it was against Arsenal, but you should be playing your hardest all game.

Martin O'Neill says Aston Villa have written to Liverpool to propose a deal for Gareth Barry.

Liverpool are desperate to sign the Villa captain and last week saw a new bid of £15million rejected.

Villa have already turned down multiple offers from their Premier League rivals, with manager O'Neill valuing his skipper in the £18million bracket.

Reports suggest that O'Neill would be willing to accept £17million, plus Reds full-back Steve Finnan in part exchange.

O'Neill has not confirmed his interest in Finnan, but has revealed that a proposal has been put to his Liverpool counterpart Rafa Benitez.

Up to Liverpool
"Liverpool have come back to us and we have responded to their proposal with a letter," O'Neill told the Birmingham Mail.

"We're still waiting to hear back from Liverpool after putting that proposal to them.

"It's really up to Liverpool. I really don't know how it's going to work out at the moment.

"I'm sure there will be some sort of resolution at some stage or another."

Not shocked
Meanwhile, Villa striker John Carew is 'sad' about the prospect of Barry leaving, but is hoping the club bring in a quality replacement.

"What is happening with Gareth is part of football," said Carew. "I don't think anyone is shocked, although you don't want to lose someone who was one of our best players last year and for all the seasons he has been at Villa.

"That is football and that's the way things work and now we are just waiting to see who comes in to replace him - but I think it will be a good player coming in.

"It is sad that Gareth is going, but I don't use much energy on it. I am focusing on the team we have here, the players we have here, and not all the surroundings."

So now it is 17 million and Finnan?? Seems a bit expensive, surly Finnan is worth at least 3 million. It is nice to see that everyone at Villa speaks highly of Barry, which speaks well for his professionalism.

17 Million plus Finnan. MOn can F.O for that, maybe 14 Million plus Finnan. But no way 17 Million.

This fiasco has been drawing out for some time, maybe if Villa are going to continue playing hard ball, it maybe time to bite the bullet on this one and look elsewhere.  :glare:

Yer, 17 million + Finnan really is taking the p!ss.  One of the most consistent RBs in the country and they're valuing him at 1 million (because they still want 18 million for Barry).  Seventeen million straight up is too much, IMO.  There's no way we should be topping that up with Finnan. :no

Finnan is worth at least 4-5 million IMO. Very consistent performer at highest level... like someone already mentioned 14+Finnan... that's all... O'neil can :censored: off and stuck with an unhappy captain... rafa should really play hardball now... it's not even funny...

They want 18M

Or 17M plus Finnan.

Half of it paid immediately. The other half paid in 12 months.

I think it's time for LFC to say fook off.

That's an absurd price for a player I'm not even sure we need.

We paid £3.2m for Finnan and he's four years or more older now and so his value should probably be decreasing. I'd ask £2m for Finnan tops given his age, still a good fee for a FB.

What I would do is tell the Leprechaun we want time to think about it, and state Barny isn't that good that we'll accede to your demands without taking time to think about it. Then let him hop around a bit for a month while we spend money on better players and then we will waste HIS time because he won't know if he needs to replace Barny or not

ffs...this turning into a joke!  Tell Villa to stick it up their :censored: and keep Alonso.  That will really screw them up and they'll end up selling Barry to somewhere like 'boro for 7 million next summer.

Like everyone else is saying, I would pull out now.

People compare it to the Maschereno transfer, who is better and younger than Barry, others compare it to the Carrick transfer , but he was 24 when he went to United and it was 14m rising to 18m.

£18m for a 27 year old Barry is not good business.
