We could probably get someone better for £10m, we could also get someone we need. I think we're well short of wide players and strikers, no point overpopulating the centre of the park before we've got quality all over it.

Then again perhaps Rafa thinks the run at the end of the season means we don't need to address other areas, somewhat naive if that is the case

SSN say LFC have bid 15M plus add ons.

I think if that bid is rejected, we should look elsewhere.

REDS DENY BARNY REPORTS

Liverpool claim they have not made a "final" offer to Aston Villa for midfielder Gareth Barny.
Reports that a final offer of £15million has been made, with £2million to come depending on Liverpool's league position next season, have been denied by club sources.

Officially a club spokesman said: "We have no further information," on the Barny situation.
But the club maintain they are still engaged in ongoing discussions over the potential deal.
Aston Villa, whose players return to pre-season training on Thursday, also declined to comment.

It is also being claimed from Anfield sources that whatever future bid Liverpool put in to try to end the summer-long saga, it is unlikely to include "extra payment" clauses. The situation over Barny's departure from Villa Park is likely to come to a head when boss Martin O'Neill's squad start pre-season work at their Bodymoor Heath training complex near Tamworth.

Barny would have hoped his move to Anfield would have been completed by now, but he is contractually required to report for training with the rest of the midlands club's squad.

Barny and O'Neill have been engaged in an increasingly bitter war of words since the England player informed his club manager over a month ago he wanted to join the Merseysiders.

Barny claimed that O'Neill had spent the past weeks working as a TV pundit at Euro 2008 but had not found the time to contact his club skipper over the situation. O'Neill hit back earlier this week claiming the player and his agent were more than aware of talks and the manager's position in not wanting Barny to leave.

But O'Neill has also made it clear that "Barny can have his transfer" if the bid meets Villa's requirements of £18million.
But Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez believes that Barry's position at Villa has become untenable with fans' groups turning against the 27-year-old.

And the Spaniard seems unwilling in such a situation to meet the £18million price tag. Barny, a close friend of Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard, is believed to be prepared for a showdown with O'Neill tomorrow where he will again reiterate his desire to leave.

I don't think O'Neill wants Carson anymore I guess, if he did then it would have been sorted out long time ago.

Well, on the bright side, bridges have well and truly been burnt now between Barry and AV.  They HAVE to sell him now and that should help in our negotiations.  Desperate to sell?  Advantage Burns...er... Liverpool! :D

VILLA DISCIPLINE BARRY

Aston Villa have disciplined Gareth Barry for giving an "unauthorised" newspaper interview and announced he will not be returning to the club for the start of pre-season training tomorrow.

And boss Martin O'Neill dismissed morning reports that Liverpool had made a £15million 'take it or leave it' offer for the midfielder.

O'Neill told Villa's website on Wednesday: "There's no truth in this morning's reports and the situation remains the same.

"Gareth will not be returning to training tomorrow and he has been disciplined after giving an unauthorised interview to the News of the World."

more on the discipline from BBC sport:

Gareth Barry has been disciplined and ordered not to report for pre-season training as Liverpool increased their offer for the Aston Villa captain.

Barry, 27, has been punished for giving an unauthorised interview to a Sunday newspaper in which he criticised Villa manager Martin O'Neill.

Villa report for pre-season on Thursday as the transfer row took another twist.

Liverpool's new bid is around £15m, but BBC Sport understands there are no extra additional payments in the offer.

Villa have turned down a succession of offers from Liverpool, and O'Neill has denied he had received a "take it or leave it" final bid on Wednesday, insisting: "The situation remains the same."

O'Neill has said Barry will be granted his wish to join Liverpool - but only when his asking price is met.

Liverpool hope to finally resolve a protracted and increasingly acrimonious saga, but O'Neill is furious at how the Anfield club's interest in Barry became public.

O'Neill has been firm in his stance on the proposed move, saying: "If Liverpool meet our valuation, he will have his express wish to leave Villa Park granted."

In the interview that led to his punishment, Barry criticised Villa for not trying hard enough to keep him - even though O'Neill insists they want him to stay.

The player signalled his intention to move when he complained on Sunday about Villa's lack of urgency in speaking to him.

"There's no going back, it's time for me to move on," he said.

"I'm desperate to play Champions League football and that's why I have to leave Villa.

"Villa kept saying they wanted me to stay but I have not heard from the manager for weeks.

"It's seven weeks now since the season finished but while the gaffer's found time to be a pundit at Euro 2008, he hasn't found the time to speak to me.

"Have Villa offered me anything to try to persuade me my future is at Villa Park, not Anfield? Not a thing."

But O'Neill has hit back to vehemently deny Barry's claim.

"The chairman and I were surprised at Gareth's comments," he said.

"Contrary to what he said, we desperately wanted to keep him - and he knows that."

Barry captained England for the first time and scored his first international goal during the recent friendly against Trinidad and Tobago.

Liverpool are keen to partner Barry in midfield with his England colleague Steven Gerrard.

Meanwhile, Argentinian left-back Emiliano Insua has signed a new three-year contract with Liverpool.

The 19-year-old Argentina Under-20 international has made five first team appearances for the club - featuring in the final three Premier League matches of last season.

Insua initially joined Liverpool on loan from Boca Juniors in January 2007 but signed a permanent contract last summer.

To be honest this is what we needed from Barry -for him to come out and talk negativley of Villa. Its not ideal and im sure he doesnt want to hurt the fans like this but they should have let him go ages ago.

On a sidenote why has Insua been given a new contract? Hes shyte.

To be honest it does seem strange giving Insua a new contract just after supposedly offering him as a p/x to other clubs. The same thing supposedly happened last season with Alonso being offered as a p/x against Eto'o, but when the p/x fell through...... a new contract.

A player with a contract is worth something even if you dont play him. A player without one is valueless.

I wonder how credible those rumours were though, mate?  Were we really shopping Insua around?  Even so, I'd hardly call the lad shyte! :D
