Not a proper centre-half, mate. More of a right back that likes to get forward.

Time to look at places we wouldn't normally think of looking at for another big Sami. Goes to show that there are a few gems out there that don't cost the Earth. It's just a case of spotting them.

Not only that but he would cost a bomb from Madrid. As for this Garay lad, ive not seen much of him but I hear hes has a rep. With the exception of Agger Rafa has :censored: choice in defenders, Garay could be nothing more than anoter Gonzales in disguise. Please lets try someone more local this time.

if we're talking about world class. spend everything in our january budget on micah. then in the summer spend all of our budget on villa. we have to build world class, not spend 4m on so and so, 3m on him, 7m on this guy, 6m on that guy, just spend it all on THE guy

You're right, in the sense that IMHO, the level of CBs in the premiership is generally better than in the Liga.

But in the scenario that we had a important money to spend, which doesn't seem to be the case anymore unless we sell first now, I had thought of the very best for me, so if we really wanted to bring a world class defender it would be easier to grab it from another European club, than from an archrival like Chelsea or Manchester United.

But if the goal is not to bring the very best, but a good defender, you're probably right that you shouldn't look outside U.K.

if the goal is not to bring in the very best, then go to the reserves

With all the :censored: recently surrounding even possible free transfers i cant see us splashing the cash on someone like Micah Richards.
Maybe the yanks will open their wallet again in the summer, but i doubt much happens before that.

Assuming £17m is going to pay for Mascherano, it's likely we'll only get £20m more (if we're lucky). Would we really want that all going on a defender who could end up as backup?

Would people prefer a centre-back or a winger?

I'd spend it all on a winger and hope we can get a cheap backup CB for the rest.

i doubt Hicks and GIllete will give Rafa more funds so soon.

Now is the time for Results, not spending.

If I was Gillet or Hicks I'd spend my money on a new manager, we have enough good players as long as they are motivated and given good tactics. How many changes to the team did we make last night, and how many did Chelsea make??
