FORMER Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier may be in line for the Socceroos coaching job again after knocking back a major job offer in Europe.
The ex-France coach has rejected an offer from Ukraine giants Dynamo Kiev, who are set to play in next season's European Champions League.
Houllier quit as manager of French club Lyon two months ago after guiding them to a second league championship, saying he needed to take a break from football.
But Houllier is a friend of Football Federation Australia chairman Frank Lowy, and the decision to reject Kiev has revived speculation he may finally be in a position to take on a job he has been perennially linked to over the past three years.
"I will not move over there,'' he told French newspaper L'Equipe of the Dynamo Kiev offer.
"I am going to wait one or two months before deciding what I am going to do, but you will not find me in Kiev.''
The timeframe Houllier mentions and his wish for a break could tie in perfectly with the end of the Socceroos' Asian Cup campaign and the 2010 World Cup qualifiers, which aren't expected to start until mid-2008.
Current Socceroos coach Graham Arnold's tenure finishes after the Asian Cup and it is generally accepted he would have to win the tournament to have any hope of keeping the job towards 2010.
The Socceroos started their Asian Cup campaign sluggishly, leading to criticism of Arnold and the team in Australia.
FFA officials have refused to comment on the coaching position until after the Asian Cup, but if the long-time flirtation between Houllier and the Socceroos is ever to be consummated, it would have to be now.
Houllier, first linked with the Australian job in 2004 when Frank Farina was in charge, was also floated as a candidate ahead of Guus Hiddink's appointment.
After last year's World Cup, any plans for him to take on the Socceroos job following Hiddink's departure were scuttled by the remaining year on his Lyon contract, which he has now seen out.
As well as Kiev, Houllier was linked with the job as French Football Federation technical director and the vacancy at English club Manchester City, filled last week by Sven-Goran Eriksson.
Two other coaches regularly mentioned as possible Socceroos bosses - Dutchmen Dick Advocaat and Leo Beenhakker - both have jobs.
Advocaat is coaching Russian league leaders Zenit St Petersburg while Beenhakker is manager of Poland.
But former Glasgow Rangers boss Advocaat could still be a candidate, telling Russian media last week: "I have a contract with Zenit till the end of the year. Then I'll decide where to go next.''
