Liverpool Football Club - The Rumour Mill

I don't know much about this guy Babel but I have a mate who's a gooner and when he heard that they were interested having watched a lot of the recent U21 tournament he was VERY excited at the prospect!! I am told he plays as an attacking wide man (left or right). If we get him, Quaresma, Kompany and Heinze I reckon that's a great summer of signings for us! :)

From the Daily Mail - Makes more sense than Queresma and seems the far more likely target seen as he plays on the left.

Anfield switch: Babel

Babel shone for the Holland Under-21 side that won the European Championships but had stated he intended to stay at Ajax at least another season.

He has already been capped by the full Netherlands side, scoring on his debut against Romania in March 2005, while the national team manager Marco van Basten has said Babel has the potential to be the next Thierry Henry.

Liverpool already have four first-team strikers in Torres, Peter Crouch, Dirk Kuyt and Andrei Voronin, but Babel is more adaptable and can be used as a winger.

Benitez has said before that wide players are his priority this summer and he seems to have lost out on Florent Malouda, who will join Chelsea this week.

Reports in the Independent claim Ajax have not yet accepted Liverpool's bid for Babel but it is close to their valuation.

Reds hunt £10m babel
Jul 9 2007 by Chris Bascombe, Liverpool Echo

LIVERPOOL are closing in on rising Dutch star Ryan Babel.

The Reds are in a strong position to land the 20-year-old having started negotiations with Ajax for the £10m-rated starlet.

Manager Rafa Benitez turned his attention to the exciting frontman having lost out to Chelsea in the battle for Lyon’s Florent Malouda.

Now Babel, a versatile attacker who can play as a striker, left or right winger, has jumped to the top of the Reds’ wanted list.

Babel was a star in the recent European Under-21 Championships when he was named man-of-the-match in Holland’s 4-1 win over Serbia.

He’s attracted interest from a host of clubs, with Arsenal initially considered his most likely destination.

But Liverpool have acted swiftly in the transfer market in recent weeks, with the working relationship between Benitez and chief executive Rick Parry yielding positive results.

Liverpool are confident Babel’s signature will be secured imminently as the youngster has stated his desire to move to Anfield.

Following last week’s £18m purchase of Fernando Torres, Benitez will be delighted to see another key stage of his summer transfer rebuilding plans taking shape.

He also remains keen to sign West Ham’s Yossi Benayoun, although the Hammers still want as much as £6m for the Israeli international, which may yet prove a stumbling block.

Craig Bellamy will move to Upton Park for £8m once he reaches agreement on the pay-off he’s expecting from Liverpool.

Djibril Cisse has joined Marseilles in a deal worth £8m, while Mark Gonzalez is joining Real Betis for £3.5m.

With Luis Garcia and Florent Sinama-Pongolle also moving on for a combined value of around £5m, Liverpool have been equally impressive raising the funds to finance Benitez’s summer spending spree.

Rafa like players who can give him options and this guy can. He can play as a 2nd striker or can play on either wing.

Watching him run with the ball he reminds of Henry but he lacks the finesse in his finishing.

Boss wages Portuguese winger war    Mon, Jul 09 2007 12:20
Benfica's Simao Sabrosa remains Rafael Benitez's first choice despite rumoured interest in £14million-rated Porto ace Ricardo Quaresma.
The Anfield boss is believed to prefer Simao over his international colleague Quaresma, but has been forced to play a waiting game by the player's Lisbon club.
Benitez is desperate to add a top class wide man to his squad but has grown so frustrated with Benfica's stance that he has made it known to them he is actively persuing the Porto man.

This could spark the serious negotiations over 27-year-old Simao that Liverpool want, although the situation has also been complicated by continued interest from Atletico Madrid.

The Spanish club, flushed with over £20million in cash from the sale of Fernando Torres are emerging as serious candidates for Simao - having previously courted Quaresma.

Although viewed as a more skilful player, Quaresma has been criticised for a lack of application in defence and when the going gets tough, having failed at Barcelona when he left Portugal in his younger years.

Simao needs no introduction to the Anfield faithful after scoring one of the goals that put Liverool out of the Champions League in 2006, while he bagged 11 league goals in 24 appearances last term.

Agree.  Never really saw what is so great about him.  In comparison to Nani, Queresema and Ronaldo, Simao really looks the odd one out.

The fee that porto want for quaresema now will not decrease.  If he has a stormer next summer it will only get higher.  £17 mil is a fair price as Nani also went for a big fee.

I was thinkin that, I really hope we get Quaresma so we can finally see some flair/attacking/entertaining football.

Liverpool tracking Legia Warsaw striker Janczyk
tribalfooball.com - July 10, 2007

Liverpool are tracking Legia Warsaw striker David Janczyk.
The 19 year-old U21 Poland international has caught the eye of Liverpool scouts at this month's U20 World Championships in Canada.

from Millwall's Vital Football site

Highly rated David Amoo is in talks with Liverpool after the European giants approached the 18 year-old about a move to Anfield.

The striker, who bagged 9 goals in 20 appearances for Millwall`s U18`s last campaign, has attracted attention from the likes of Manchester United and Tottenham in the past.

Amoo visited the Liverpool training ground this week and is poised to leave The Den, despite the prospect of being offered a pro-contract with the Lions.

The youngster also appears to be quite an athlete. He is pictured in the black vest on the far side in this 100m sprint.

Results for his race times can be found here:

Benitez’ double swoop
Jul 10 2007 by Chris Bascombe, Liverpool Echo

LIVERPOOL hope to tie up their double swoop for Ryan Babel and Yossi Benayoun within the next 24 hours.

Negotiations for the pair have entered a key stage, with the Reds increasingly confident of reaching agreement with Ajax and West Ham.

The arrival of 20-year-old attacker Babel appears more of a formality, with the player determined to complete the switch to Anfield for a fee likely to be around £10m.

Benayoun has also informed his club he’s made up his mind to join the Reds, but talks with West Ham have proceeded delicately from the outset with the valuation of the player a sticking piont.

Progress was made during another day of tough negotiations yesterday, and it’s hoped the deadlock will be broken today.

West Ham want £6m for the Israeli international.

Meanwhile, Rafa Benitez says Jamie Carragher’s decision on his international future should be respected by the whole country.

Carragher will speak to Steve McClaren again before the next international with Germany on August 22.

“In any situation like this we need to think about what’s best for the player, the club and the country,” said Benitez, who today completed the £7.5 million sale of Craig Bellamy to West Ham.

“If the player is physically and mentally fit to play in every game, it’s naturally better for his career and the country or club he’s playing for.

“That’s what Carra is thinking about because I know he is someone who never gives less than 100 per cent.

“Everyone knows he is a fantastic professional who wants to perform at the very best level possible in every game he plays.

“We must all respect any decision he makes, because it is certain he is thinking about what’s good for everyone.”
