I wouldn't have thought so either mate as the other alternatives were Requelme and Diego. Alonso doesnt really fill a similar role at all.

ps my Spanish isn't up to much  :D

Heinze set to buy-out United contract to clinch Liverpool move
Last updated at 21:57pm on 14th July 2007

Gabriel Heinze is locked in a £6.8 million tug-of-war with Manchester United because they refuse to sell him to their bitter rivals Liverpool.

Anfield boss Rafa Benitez has been given the green light by the club's American owners to swoop for the Argentina defender.

But despite giving Heinze the all-clear to find a new club after losing his first-team spot to Patrice Evra last season, United have made it clear they have no intention of allowing him to move to Anfield.

Heinze is now weighing up whether to buy out the remaining two years of his Old Trafford contract in order to seal a dramatic switch down the M62 after admitting his desire to move to Liverpool.

New FIFA rules allow players to pay off the final two years of contracts and £65,000-a-week man Heinze knows it will cost him a whopping £6.8m to trigger his exit from United.

No player has moved between the clubs since the unheralded Phil Chisnall left Old Trafford for Anfield in 1964.

If the 29-year-old does buy out his contract, the Champions League finalists would then get Heinze on a free transfer, handing the player a hefty signing-on fee and salary package to compensate him for his United buy-out.

In all honesty can you seriously see Heinze buying out a supposedly 6.8 million pound contract. The figures are probably wide of the mark, but still would any footballer part with millions to sign for another club.

And would that club, Liverpool of course give him such a hefty salary and signing on fee to compensate ?

I wouldnt mind him playing for us atall, but at the age of 29, and having to fight for his place with Aurelio, Riise and even Arbeloa. Would that amount of money warrant such a move ?

Say if the 6.8 million figure is correct and we paid him 7 or 8 which is pushing it IMO considering his age, and gave him a contract of 30 grand a week would it make sense ?

I had to smile when I read this morning that Newcastle had enquired about Ronaldhino, but been put off by the £50+million price. I was just surprised Big Sam didn't offer a loan deal. Give Newcastle credit they certainly manage to retain their dillusions of grandure

Newcastle would probably sign him for 55mill and have a release clause of 5mill so a proper club within the prem can sign him the following season  :p

With the vast amount of money both Newcastle and Spurs have spent over the years, strange they are no better than Bolton.

http://absolutelyunited.com/redcan/505/2007/07/16/heinze-wants-fergies-blessing-for-move-to-liverpool/

Defender Gabriel Heinze is waiting on Sir Alex’s blessing before moving to Liverpool.

The Times reports today that the Argentine defender is set on a transfer to Merseyside but faces pressure from team mates to move abroad.

Now Heinze will allow Fergie to have the last word before making his final decision.

The newspaper reports: “The Argentina left back played in the Copa America final against Brazil in Venezuela last night and is waiting for the green light from Ferguson before deciding whether to join Liverpool in a £6 million deal.

“Ferguson is desperate to prevent Heinze becoming the first player to move between the clubs in more than 40 years but under new Fifa legislation the defender can buy out the last two years of his United contract whether Ferguson likes it or not. Liverpool are ready to test that ruling, but Ferguson and his senior players have urged the Argentinian to move abroad — to Real Madrid or Juventus.

“Although Heinze is aware of the backlash that the transfer would create among United fans, he is keen to make the move — but only with Ferguson’s blessing.”

The Mail reports that Real Madrid have revived their interest in the 29 year old player.

Leiva's Liverpool move yet to be rubberstamped
tribalfooball.com - July 15, 2007

Liverpool's deal for Gremio midfielder Lucas Leiva is still to be rubberstamped.

The transfer is dependent on Leiva acquiring the necessary documents allowing him to play in England and the Reds reserve the right to cancel the move if they cannot secure the player's eligibility.

Liverpool officials have been working to secure an Italian passport for Leiva and Benitez is hopeful all the documentation will be in place in time to allow the player to link up with the squad this week.

Benitez said: "He is the captain of the Brazil Under 20 side and won the Golden Boot in his country last year, so we know he has quality. We also believe he has the mentality and the character you need to do well in England."

Arsenal, Liverpool eyeing Chelsea's Diarra
tribalfooball.com - July 15, 2007

Arsenal and Liverpool are eyeing Chelsea midfielder Lassana Diarra.
The Sunday Mirror says Diarra has been offered a new three-year deal by the Blues but decided to reject the offer out of hand in favour of seeing out the remaining year of his contract.

Diarra's decision has alerted both Arsenal and Liverpool and Chelsea are likely to consider offers in the coming weeks to prevent the player cashing in on a Bosman free transfer.

Liverpool swoop for Tranmere prospect Roberts

The People says Liverpool have beaten a host of top Premiership clubs to sign 15-year-old Roberts - in a deal that could reach £1m.

Central midfielder Roberts is on standby for the England Under-17 World Cup squad after impressive displays for the Tranmere youth side.

By just I meant in January. Sorry for the confusion  :p

From wiki:

On 18 January 2007 it was reported that Ronaldo has agreed terms with A.C. Milan for a transfer of about $7.8 million.[3] Ronaldo was forced to pay for the remaining period on his contract which tied him to Real Madrid, only because the latter did not accept to release him, while A.C. Milan were not ready to pay such a sum.
