What about a fans campaign to either:
a) Petition the board NOT to sell the naming rights, or...
b) Set up a group with the aim of buying the naming rights from the club, if they insist on this - with the stated intention of 'New Anfield' as the name.
The media coverage would be significantly greater than just a petition, and would show that the fans were extremely committed to the idea. In the end we probably would not have to buy the naming rights at all - can you imagine if a board sold the naming rights to their own fans because the fans were unhappy with the idea? Or if they didn't sell to the fans and to some multi-national company instead? Terrible publicity.
Just a thought.
There was a thread a while back about the name for the stands in the new ground - I meant to post but didn't. Just as a minor point these were my thoughts.
New Anfield
Behind Goal 1: The Kop
Behind Goal 2: Memorial Stand
Other stand 1: Shankly Stand
Other stand 2: Dagliesh Stand OR if the stadium is not called New Anfield the Anfield Stand. As long as the Kop stays behind a goal the stands can be rejigged to put this near the site of Anfield if needs be. OR sell the naming rights to this stand at 5/10 year intervals to raise the cash.
I'd also put the away fans next to the Kop, every game I've been to LFC home or away, or any other game for that matter - the atmosphere is almost always better when the away fans and the home fanatics are close to each other. European Games are obviously an exception to this at Anfield - but for the most part I've found it to be true.
