Dean Ashton is a good player, but you honestly believe that Ashton would be the final piece to the puzzle up front that would see us lift our 19th league title?

I have a better chance of winning the lottery than us signing David Villa. We were interested once and he said "I don't like the Beatles or the English weather".

He can f#ck off.

Liverpool prepare to sell Crouch to fund Villa move
By Jason Burt
Published: 29 December 2006
Liverpool are understood to be preparing to sell Peter Crouch - and want to sign Valencia's David Villa as the England striker's replacement. The moves, which would cost a combined total of more than £40m, could come as part of what is being predicted as the busiest January transfer window since the system was introduced four years ago.

There is a number of stumbling blocks to any deal, however. Although Crouch is wanted by Newcastle United, they may not be prepared to meet Liverpool's £12m valuation. Instead they would like to pay around half that amount for the 25-year-old, who moved to Anfield for £7m in the summer of 2005 from Southampton.

Liverpool need to generate a bigger fee for Crouch to help to pay for Villa, also 25, who would cost around £25m from Valencia and who has long been tipped for a move to the Premiership and is believed to favour joining Liverpool.

Villa, who scored 25 goals in 35 League games last season, but just eight so far this term, has long been admired by the Liverpool manager, Rafael Benitez, who has made attempts to sign the Spanish international. Villa would not be eligible for Liverpool's European Cup tie against Barcelona, having already played in the competition this season and with Valencia still involved it will make his transfer even harder to secure.

Crouch has fallen out of favour and in recent weeks has fallen further behind Dirk Kuyt and Craig Bellamy. He got his chance against Blackburn Rovers on Boxing Day but was singled out for criticism by Benitez after missing three headed chances.

That defeat meant Liverpool slipped out of the Champions' League places and, with the takeover by Dubai International Capital still to be completed, they need to add fresh impetus to their season. Blackburn's Lucas Neill is also expected to sign next month.

With Michael Owen and Shola Ameobi injured, the Newcastle United manager Glenn Roeder has targeted a striker as his main January signing. He is considering Lyon's John Carew, who has been told he can leave the French champions and could arrive initially on loan, as a cheaper alternative should Newcastle fail to land Crouch.

These rumours keep on appearing

As a squad/rotation player, yes I would like Crouch to stay too. But I don't think he would be satisfied with that. He seems to think he is first team material, and for me, he is not, not by a long shot yet. Someone good to come in and try to unsettle defences with his height when all else has failed. Kuyt-Bellamy link-up is looking much more promising these days.

The BBC website says that Newcastle are prepared to offer twelve million for Crouch.

I like Crouch and hope he stays, but to make a five million pound profit on the guy IMO is too good an offer to turn down.

Particularly if we can replace him with a better striker.

I like Crouch as a person and think he was great for us last season.
However when he plays we play the long ball to often and we are so predictable, and Crouch needs atleast 6-7 chances most of the time to score a goal.
Rafa wont be sentimental about Crouch and will sell him.

I like Crouch and think he's had a bit of a rough deal this season. For £12million I would snatch their hands off though.

12 million is alot of money to turn down...if it was offered.

But i feel sorry for Crouch, i am only just reading Fowlers book and in it he talks about the treble season when he was only in the side the odd game but when he come in he was expected to deliver goals and play well.
Its not as easy as that, players get sharper with a run of games and after not playing for 4-5 games then it was always going to be difficult for him to come in and do the business. His heading was poor and i am not totally defending him, but you've got to feel sorry for the lad, he was banging in goals left right and centre before he was left out.

Selling him might also have a negative impact on the dressing room as i think he is one of the more popular players, he seems good mates with our english players and like he is one of the jokers of the dressing room.
I hope he doesnt go tbh.

Never wanted Crouch in the first place BUT he's won me over. Definitely worth a place in our squad .If only he could work on and improve his heading ability (especially power and direction) he'd be putting away at least 50% more goals given the chances he gets .

Rafa should get him down to the gym , bulk up and strengthen those neck muscles . The lads got talent but he's not making the most of it .
