Daniel agger - Injured?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby JC_81 » Sun Jul 30, 2006 12:02 pm

With all of the focus on new players, and in terms of our defence Palleta in particular, I was wondering what has happened to Agger.  Surely if he was fit he'd be getting a game in the pre-season friedlies, but he's not featured at all to my knowledge.

I have to say things aren't looking great for him right now.  If he's fit and isn't getting a chance even now then there is definitely something up between him and Benitez.  At 5 million or so he wasn't cheap so I wouldn't like to think he's out of favour already.  If he's injured, then even when he does come back it looks like Palleta will have skipped him as preferred backup to Hyypia/Carra with his impressive displays so far.

I thought Agger looked a good player in the couple of times I saw him last season.  Games against Birmingham and Newcastle I remember in particular, but he got a few niggling injuries and wasn't seen much in the run-in at the end of last season.

Does anyone know what the latest is with him?

The most probable scenario at this moment is that he's injured. I don't think there could be anything else. He shouldn't be out of favour just yet as there is no way Benitez would leave him out after purchasing him not too long ago. Certainly things don't look as good as it use to be for him since Palleta's arrival but at Hyypia's age, it is very likely that either Palleta or Agger would step up to be Carragher's long term CB partnership. The point is, Agger certainly still has a conceivable future with us.

Its a strange one John, but he must be injured. I havent read anywhere that he is injured but surely he wouldnt be getting totally omitted from friendlies when the likes of Diao and Traore are still getting time on the pitch.
I thought he looked promising in his only appearances, he looks great with the ball at his feet, bringin the ball out of defence.
But one things for sure injured or fit he will struggle to get games if Palletta keeps performing as he has, yesterday he looked the business again.

It is strange Ace.  If he is injured then surely someone would have heard about it?

I can understand giving Traore and Diao a game though, more chance of someone coming in for them if they're playing rather than if they're sitting at home I suppose.  Plus Benitez did the same with Baros last summer even when he knew he was selling him.

I’m sure yesterday the commentator mentioned he was injured, he definitely would have featured heavily otherwise.

Actually, he was playing in some sort of youth championship for Denmark at around the same time the world cup was going on, and Denmark went quite far, so maybe he has only recently returned to training.

Thats good to hear, i was fearing a situation like Everton found themselves in with Kroldrup, i hope if he is injured its nothing too serious because he looks like a potentially brilliant ball playing centre half.

Injured or returning late to training are likely scenarios.  He may feature more when the likes of Stevie and Xabi play if it's the latter.

As for Paletta jumping to the head of the queue for CB back-up, you may have a point John.  On the other hand, Rafa has said on more than one occasion that Paletta reminds him of Carra, while Agger reminds him of Sami.  Perhaps they are distinct understudies to each and when, say, Carra needs a rest we'll see Paletta whereas when Sami needs a rest we'll see Agger.

Yes I would be reluctant to give up on agger at this stage. He showed enough in his cameos last season to suggest he can be a really really good player. It's not any great insight to say he needs to toughen up a bit but he does, and he also needs to be a bit more committed once he has made a decision.
I reckon he'll get it though. He looked about the best ball-playing centre-half we've had since the Alan Hansen days,  and I reckon we can teach him how to defend. The technical stuff you can pick up, talent is a little harder.

cool, calm, and collected is how he played and for a young lad that was impressive.

him and carra are the natural partnership but the drill is not going to be happy on the bench

He is indeed injured, but he will be back shortly. He's with the squad at the moment, and a commentator on Eurosport confirmed that he was out with an injury.

I think he keeps gettin niggling injuries or recurring injuries of the injury he suffered in the latter part of last season, not sure what the injury was but i cant see it being anything other than that which is the reason he isnt playing.

I think theres more chance of people buying Traore if the don't see him play

Also very glad to hear that.  Glad he's getting some games under his belt.

Bigmick - I agree, I think he'll come good.

Bad Bob - Interesting idea that maybe Palleta will be Carra's backup and Agger Sami's.  We'll see soon enough.
