It's benitez - The deal's done

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

I have it from a very good source that he will be the next boss. Apparently, he turned down the Real Madrid job because he had already given his word to the Reds.
Coincidentally, or perhaps not, after receiving this info I checked the bookies' websites and his odds of him becoming LFC manager have come in from 7-2 to 1-2.
I'd be made up, he's got the pedigree and a record of signing good players. He's also shoved it up the big boys in Spain.
Here's hoping he can do the same for us.

Apparently, Parry has said that the next manager must have a track record of winning trophies. That will rule out Curbishley, Strachan and the likes of also run.
Rafael Benitez, who took over Valencia 3 seasons ago and already steer them to two Primera Liga title and UEFA Cup this season (against the heavyweights like Real Madrid, Deportivo, Barcelona etc) appeared to be the right guy. Don't rule out Maurinho though.

Incidently, the quote from Parry: "A track record is obviously important. If you are looking at someone's ability to win trophies, proof of doing it clearly helps. Commitment, enthusiasm and hunger are important too. But quality will be the watchword."
I think the same quality statement should be applied to new recruits (for this season) as well.

Overall, I am happy we are moving forward in the right manner. Now another point to ponder...if Benitez is appointed, will that mean we will be signing new Spanish players now ?

The agent of Valencia coach Rafael Benitez has insisted the Spaniard has not been approached by Liverpool. The Sunday Times reported Benitez, who guided Valencia to the league title and the Uefa Cup this season, had been shortlisted to replace Gerard Houllier.

Charlton's Alan Curbishley, Porto's Jose Mourinho and Gordon Strachan were the other names on the shortlist. Benitez's agent Manuel Garcia Quilon told BBC Sport: "Nobody from Liverpool has been in contact with him."

On Monday, Houllier parted company with Liverpool after six years in charge at Anfield. Last week, Quilon was reported to have said Benitez had received an offer from an English club.
"I cannot comment further from what I said the other day. We do not have any agreement in place at present with Liverpool football club," said Quilon.

Since taking over from Hector Cuper in June 2001, Benitez has guided Valencia to two Primera Liga titles. He joined Valencia from Tenerife after a short spell with Extremadura. Previously, he had undistinguished tenures at Valladolid and Osasuna, while he also spent two years at the helm of Real Madrid's high profile B team.

I will not expect any of the candidates to openly state thay they have been approached, certainly not while negotiation is underway, or for the case of Maurinho, the small matter of European Cup Final this week.

However, it is clear that non of them have made it abosolutely clear that they WILL NOT consider the role of managing Liverpool, which is still one of the most coverted role in European football...yes even as of today.

Whether it is Benitez, Maurinho, Curbishley or O'Neill is fine. They each will bring something new to the club. Whether it is man management, spotting a new talent, managing on a shoe string budget,  Premiership experience or European experience...non of them have it all. The world is full of compromise ain't it.

I am relieved (not happy but relieved) that GH have stepped aside for the club to move forward.

I hope it's true but according to the weekend press and other media coverage he's staying in Spain. But then again after Rob's scoop last week, who are we to argue!!!

Benitez would be my second/third choice behind Mourinho and maybe O'Neill.

I'd love to see O'neil at Anfield but it just wont happen. I'd like to see Mourinho take over just to p*ss Roman loads of cash off.

Mourinho is the most wanted manger in Europe at the moment and he has done a brilliant job at Porto turning them into one of the best (maybe the best come Thusday) sides in Europe.

He has made good signings like Benni McCarthy, and youngsters like Deco and Derlei have become very good players with him at the helm. Not to mention he hates fergie and dumped the scum out of Europe.

He has said that he would prefer to come to Liverpool over Chelsea, probably because of their treatment of Ranieri, Queiroz just got sacked from Real Madrid, so he might be another option.

Queiroz isn't the answer imo, he'd failed to win anything in a team that should rip most teams apart for fun.
