Red=Great wrote:Apparently, Parry has said that the next manager must have a track record of winning trophies. That will rule out Curbishley, Strachan and the likes of also run.

Also brings into question O'Neill's "trophies" - do SPL and worthless cups actually qualify as trophies?

Red=Great wrote:Rafael Benitez, who took over Valencia 3 seasons ago and already steer them to two Primera Liga title and UEFA Cup this season (against the heavyweights like Real Madrid, Deportivo, Barcelona etc) appeared to be the right guy. Don't rule out Maurinho though.

That's the CV I'd be looking at and thinking "man for the job, all he has to do is decide which one he wants"

Red=Great wrote:Overall, I am happy we are moving forward in the right manner. Now another point to ponder...if Benitez is appointed, will that mean we will be signing new Spanish players now ?

It would be a marked improvement on the dodgy French dealings under Houllier. Bit late to land Reyes, I reckon he'd be better off here than at Arsenal (in terms of 1st team opportunities and maybe becoming a key player)

Can we get an English speaker, Please,  Oh hold on that would rule Strachan and Dalglish out.  The spanish accent is mighty fine if you can sing like that girl in Baccara  " Mista,  my mind ish full of Faaaaaaaacinaaation, lovely.

Please can we rule out some poxy club mofo from the likes of Charlatan and Bolton. Won nothing, proved nothing. Are we really that far gone that we have to steal from lesser clubs? QUALITY is not something you're guaranteed when shopping in the bargain basement

I also agree with Owzat there.

I cringe when I hear people mention Strachen or Steve McLaren....

None of you have any idea what achievement is. So let me explain. It is when somebody achieves more than is expected. Curbishley took Charlton 20 places above what the board expected. Like wise for Big Sam. Mr Jose has only done what could be expected of a club the size of Porto. Benitez has achieved alot but you could stop to think about the achievement of taking a club with no money, up to the premiership and pipping clubs who have spent 5X as much. I rest my case.

Actually, at Liverpool achievement is summed up like this:

"If you are first you are first, if you are second you are nothing"

Besides, I'm not sure you know what you are talking about.
How can a club like Porto be expected to reach the CL final? They are not a huge club, they aren't even in a top league. So you think they stood a better chance of being in there than Arsenal, Real, AC? or even Man U who Porto knocked out.

Benitez has WON one of the greatest titles in club football this season (la liga). I think the Spanish league is clearly superior to others in Europe right now, so this is a huge achievement. Especially considering Valencia aren't near the size of Barcelona and Real.

Curbishley has done a lot with Charlton, but this is still CHARLTON. More money doesn't always mean more success.
It is easier to go from 1st division to top 10 in the premiership than from 4th in the premiership to 1st nowadays!

Rafa Benitez refused to rule out moving to Liverpool:

"I have a contract, but football makes many turns and anything can happen,"
"If an offer arrives from any club, I would tell them to speak to my agent and he will speak to Valencia."
"I am very happy here, but one day they are shouting your name and the next they are booing you."

You're talking about relative achievement. To the average Liverpool, Arsenal, manure and Chelski fan achievement is winning things. To a poxy two bit $h1te club like charlatan, Bolton or portsmouth, achievement is staying in the Premiership and finishing as high as possible. That is why I have massive reservations about O'Neill - finishing top ten in the Premiership is an "achievement" (of sorts) with Leicester, but is a given for Liverpool FC. The fact is the aims are far higher, the stakes much higher and the finances increased according to the club's status. Getting to mid-table in the Premiership isn't that big a deal, it's not like there is a rigid order in the top ten that is never broken. The average Premiership clubs like Southampton, Blackburn, Man City, everton and spurts move up and down from one season to the next, there is plenty of opportunity to finish anywhere up to sixth. That we knew 4th was between Liverpool and Newcastle all along demonstrates that the top five is the only relatively secure thing about the Premiership (Arsenal, manure, Chelski, Liverpool and Newcastle)
