England vs portugal - Gerrard to score the winner

International Football/Football World Wide - General Discussion

Well it looks like brazil are heading out! Two of the biggest favourites going out in the quarters who would have thought it. Looks to be germany italy france and portugal left in it. Ill go for germany, none of these four teams have done anything amazing this tournament though.

Exactly, all controversy out of the way, we just didnt perform at all in the end then bottled it on penalties and didnt deserve the win, now get over it people, we lost, time to move on to supporting liverpool again

You have to say that this World Cup campaign was doomed from the onset.

Taking 4 Strikers when two were injured (Owen and Rooney) and taking a rookie for the "experience" with no intention of playing him (Walcott) was naive in the extreme.

What you have in the England team are very good club players but very average International players (and yes I include Gerrard in that equation) although to be fair to him he was folowing Sven's instructions and it was painful watching him perform as Lampard's gimp ???

Today against a distinctly under strength Portugal, England didn't start to play until they had Rooney (very silly little boy) sent off for an inexcusable and nasty retaliatory foul on Carvalho (Who amoungst us didn't have tears in their eyes when his feet landed in Carvalho's biscuits ! :D )

The papers will talk about how we dominated , how we battled etc etc etc but for those who have long ago took off the England blinkers will tell you it's the same old story and the story's worn thin !  ???

What do you base that on?

Portugal have been a better side and played better football than France consistently for a few years now, and Brasil are hardly lighting the world on fire. Also, Scolari will know the Brasil team inside out.

I base it on france's performance against brasil.  :D   :p

It doesnt matter if portugal have played better for the last two years, what does that win you in all honesty. France are now playing with the swagger of 98' and the only team thats stopping them is germany. Not portugal.

Portugal did fu.ck all against 10 men for over an hour. Zidane will walk all over them and i will be pi$$ing myself laughing when ronaldo cries at the end like the little pus.sy that he is.

Defensively Joe Cole is a shambles. Ashley Cole joins him forward. Joe doesn't pass therefore he loses the ball. Then Ashley can't get back and Joe is too lazy to track back and even when he does like we saw today he defended and miss kicked the ball and sliced a clearence at least 4 times.

What's with all these step overs aswell? They hardly ever come off. When he plays left wing he ends up in the middle. It's too predictable him cutting in. It didn't work against Miguel today. He was awful today as he was against T&T and Paraguay. Fair enough he played well aginst Sweden but performing once every 4 games is not really good enough. Sven saw the light today and took him off.

Also when he cuts in he is put under pressure and forced back and wastes the chance of an attack. When given space Cole is very productive, when marked tightly he is uneffective.

I think we may see more of Downing in the future. McClaren won't be afraid of playing anyone whose club is not in the top 4. Whereas Erikson, rarely plays anyone who is not in the top 4, take defoe and carrick for an example. Downing for Boro especially in the UEFA Cup, defensively and offensively was very good. Being a natural left footer he will have no need to cut inside and he can cover cole.

Cole is a good player but for me he has been very poor and that is why england have come under so much pressure down their left side.

mate you and me are gonna have to aggree to disagree on this one. look at the bbc and sky sports and all the newspaper player ratings. everyone else thinks joe cole has done well in this world cup. he maybe selfish at times, but thats what winger generally are. thats what makes them have the drive to take on players the way they do. alongside rooney, he has been the most dangerous player in an england shirt in this world cup.... see who disagrees with me

portuguese players have to go the day before to london.

what about that, you are cheaters for 40 years, how do you feel, being like that?

England had an excellent opportunity to appoint a manager with technical ability, proven track record and an understanding of all aspects of the game ....His name is Gus Hiddink but the FA went "safe" and we got Steve McClaren  :Oo:
