Bye bye plastic fans - Switch the light off on the way out

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Ironically enough,Michael would have been better off going to Madrid for 25m.He then would have been a certified "Galactico" and undroppable, unlike the cheap squad player they actually bought.

Being a greedy sneaky little shi.te doesnt always work.

Great post JBG, gutted over the result but if there is silver lining then some of fair weather fans may fornicate off now.
Though on negative sign, those supporters who seems to suddenly appear when things dont go well, look to be lining up to take their places
The fact that im gutted over this result when 18 months ago i would have just been delighted to even got this far shows where we have come in such a short time

Good post JBG agree totally with the point you were trying to make.  However I do take objection to lumping Owen fans or Baros fans or people who refer to the league as the "EPL" automatically in the category of plastic fans.

I for one am an Owen fan and was dissapointed to see him go. Dissapointed in Owen that he would want to leave in the first place and at the club for the way things were handled. Still I'm intelligent enough (I think...) to understand that we will never know the true motives, if there were any misconceptions or misunderstandings basically the circumstances of the 'move'.  In my heart I would have liked to have seen him return to the fold rather than go to the barcodes as I genuinely feel he saw the error of his ways quick smart even before we won in Istanbul.

I don't want to turn this into another thread so I'll quickly mention the EPL bit...  I'd like to remind everyone that the internet is an international medium and as such allows Liverpool fans from all over the world to participate in and feel part of a fantastic community of likeminded individuals.  I'm from Plymouth originally and began following Liverpool when I was 7.  My family moved to Oz when I was 11 and it was like being shipped to a third world country at the time ( no offence to true Aussies :D ) but I had to leave behind friends, football on TV, Golden Wonder crisps and evrything else shown in the nostalgia thread.  Occaisionally Liverpool would be on TV but at 2 or 3 in the morning with parents like mine you had fat chance of seeing that!
Now, some 25 years later and thanks to technology, the world is a much smaller place and I get to see games from La Liga, Seria A and the "EPL" as it marketed every where except in England regularly.  I still know it as the league but still find myself typing "EPL" or "the Prem" just because.....we'll I'm susceptible to the effects of the mass media I guess.

Point of this rather waffly post (sorry its a slow day) is that yes, I agree with JBG but let's not make generalisations shall we?

When we departed the Champions League for this season, immediately after the match I knew there would be three groups of people with various mindsets.

1- Those who claim on TV and radio phone-ins that "the wheels have come off" and "Liverpool only fluked the European Cup" last season. Usually Londoners who collectively have zero European Cup wins among their teams.

2- Those gloryhunters who miraculously discovered a love for Liverpool FC after Steven Gerrard lifted the trophy on May 25th 2005, now realising that if Villarreal win the Champions League, then they will need to start wearing yellow football shirts, after of course they look at a map to see where Villarreal actually is.

3- The London media who once again began the stories and rumours of "Gerrard Will Leave After The World Cup" and "Rafa The Gaffa Offa To Inter"

Lets move on.

We all know we have striker problems...Strikers soft..stirkers hit everwhere except the net. What else....

Of course I felt so bad.... but this is a game..winning and loosing is part of it.

Further its very rare Champion retain position twice in a row.

What bemused me, is the fact we came back with 3-0 down but couldnt do it when we were 1-0. Thats all.

Anyway concentrate on Arsenal match....and chase Chelsea.

P/s we are not sore loosers....like ehem..ehem.. The Special One.

I liken this season to the season after we did the double.
The fans are/were on a high after a monumental Liverpool season (in the cups) and expectations rise overnight.
But then we dont win anything but the league position has improved immensely.
This surely is testament to the fact that the squad as a whole has improved.

I see this Summer as crucial as the Summer of 2002.
We have a World Cup coming up and would love to get some of the great players on show.

I'm optimistic because I think Rafa will prove to be much shrewder than GH who signed those goons, Diouf and Diao.
If we get a world class striker and RM we could be in for a cracking season.

.

Grow Up you soft Sod - The initial team selection must have brought cheers in the Benfica dressing room ( and I'm not talking about the defence)
Once again a BIG game and the wrong selection. Too much trying to be clever.

And don't call me a Plastic Supporter - Born and bred longer than YOU

Sir Bob " I don't change players unless I've got a better one and then ONLY one at a time"

1. Who is calling you a "plastic supporter"? I have never questioned you as a supporter, never on this place or elsewhere.

2. What has your point got to do with my point? Nothing at all.

Picking an arguement for the sake of it, either that or you completely misread or misinterpreted my post.

Keep a wide berth from me in future.

Maybe JBG is referring to me  :D

I admit i was unhappy when baros left. Its not that i think that baros is a great striker ....... (he is very average)... but we replaced baros with a worse one ........ie...crouch.

We got rid of baros when we had less effective strikers in the squad... (morientes & cisse)....

You know the type: the guys who think Rafa was stupid to sell Baros, that the board were nuts to let Owen go to Madrid for peanuts and then not re-sign him 12 months on at twice the money, the guys that think we are a rubbish team and that there are major problems blah blah blah.

People that have been fans of Liverpool for more than 5 minutes will understand that this is one of the most promising times we've been in for 15 or 16 years, and if people thought things are bad now, then they weren't about when it all went pear shaped under Souness, and such like.

Our great European adventure came to an end last night. It had to end somewhere. At halftime last May 25th, when we were 3-0 down, any one of us would happily have swapped being thrashed 4-0 by TNS in the first round of this years competition if we could come back against Milan and win, let alone going out to Benfica in the last 16.

And for those who say Benfica are a mickey mouse club, well, such is another sad indictment of a Sky Sports era football supporter. Benfica have had as proud a European history as most, and while their current side are not going to set the world alight, for me there is no shame in going out to a club that has such great heritage.

I've been reading many of the posts today and you'd swear we had just been relegated. I'm as disappointed as anybody, but one poor display doesn't mean the end is nigh. Its just part of sport, and even the great sides of the 1970s and 1980s had their bitter disappointments and setbacks.

The criticism of the team, for me, has gone way too far, which is perplexing, given that we are actually having one of our best seasons in years, in so far as we have been consistent and steady all year and real, genuine groundwork is being laid.

Winning the big trophy last year had the one downside in that it was always going to raise expectations to ridiculous levels, and last night's result has seen that particular chicken come home to roost.

I'm sick and tired of fair weather fans and this place has its fair share of them, and they come in the usual guise, although I'll refrain from getting into that.

The way I see it is that those who have gone completely over the top in their criticism betray their shallow natures as Liverpool  fans, as genuine long standing fans who had to endure the disappointment of every manager since Daglish will recognise the great thinks Rafa Benitez is doing for this club.

Yer good bye to the jester hats with bells on wearing crowd, them big foam hands  :glare:,  EASAY EASAY, EASAY, soccer A.M. chants, they crept into the ground since last may they will be supporting Arsenal now or whom ever wins the CL good ridance.
One point I disagree with though JBG is about Baros to me he is no worse than Crouch, Morientes or Cisse so when he sold him he should have least brought in someone better and Crouch is no better than Baros two totally different players I admit but is one better than the other?.
He dragged defenders out of position so others could attack, he ran his socks off for the club atleast his heart was at Liverpool I cannot say the same about the others?

I also think Rafa got the team selection wrong against Benfica twice the partnership of Morientes has NOT worked all season so it was never going to work on wednesday night either.
I know he had no choice in defence but the upfront pairing was wrong, and I never want to see that line up again.
There is no-one anywhere in the world at any stage who is any bigger or any better than this football club.

OI OI hang on a minute i take that as a dig at me, because i mentioned somthing about "not understanding why Rafa sold Baros"

Listen mate every one on this forum is entitled to an opinion whether you like it or not what you wrote
You know the type: the guys who think Rafa was stupid to sell Baros,
,you have offended me becuase you say that i may have jumped on the band wagon cos we won the CL last may,

i am sick to the back teeth with people like you accusing people of being plastic fans since we won the CL last may. ok i joined last July not because Liverpool won the CL its because thats when i had the internet installed.

your not the only life long supporter of liverpool i have supported liverpool since i was 10, 19yrs ago, (work that out :p )and if i say that i thought baros was a decent player, then Baros in my eyes was a decent player and i still cant understand why Rafa sold him.

Like ciggy says above he can be no worse than the strikers we have now, and if Baros was with us now your telling me that you would pick Cisse, Moro and crouch over him??? if you say yes your a liar.

Rant over  :veryangry

The main reason why i dont like glory hunters is becasue they in general know nothing about football and clutter this forum with BS.
I also do not like people either claim that because they are either Scouse, supported for 30 years, have more posts, have been to more games, etc.... that means they are right or their opinion is any better than anyone else's.

I dont care whether you have been supporting Liverpool for 30 years or since May, the main thing is do you love the club? will you stick with them? and are you prepared to back you players and manager? If you are not then Liverpool doesnt want you.

But if you are prepared to do these things then you will be part of an elite group of supporters that.......NEVER WALK ALONE!!!!!  :buttrock
