I'm absolutely baffled that there aren't more top clubs voicing an interest in Owen (regradless of the fact they all know he wants to come home.)

Most criticism of Mikey points to his lack of all-around game, inability to hold the ball up, loss of pace (compared to his early years) but you can say anything you like about the lad. His goal record over the years compares to just about every striker in world football.

If Michael had spent his life playing interantional football for Luxembourg i'd bet his goal record would only be marginally worse than his record for England. Michael Owen would score goals for ANY team he played in. I cannot believe Arsenal (with Reyes and Van Persie unproven and Bergkamp in his final year) have not moved for the lad.

I think "you don't know what you've got till it's gone" springs to mind about Owen and I also think that applies for him also :(

Don't care what anybody say's in my eyes he's a Legend :bowdown.

Robbie Fowler has blamed a 'underhand campaign' waged by Gerard Houllier for tearing him away from the club he loves.

The experienced striker left Liverpool in 2001 after nine illustrious years at Anfield, and after failing to settle at Leeds now plies his trade for Stuart Pearce's Manchester City side.

However, despite being quick to praise both his current employers and Leeds, Fowler has admitted he believes he should still be turning out for The Reds.

The prolific striker endured a difficult relationship with Houllier and has now accused the French tactician of not showing him enough respect and conducting a devious plan to see him exit Anfield.

"For all the decent people I've met at Leeds and Manchester City, for all the wonderful fans at those two clubs, I know I should still be at Liverpool now," Fowler said in his autobiography, serialised in The Mail on Sunday.

"It's easy for me to blame Gerard Houllier for what happened, easy for me to say that I made a huge mistake in allowing his underhand campaign to force me out.

"Houllier did what he had to do, I guess he did what he thought was in the best interests of the club.

"I could be bitter towards Houllier and Phil Thompson, his assistant, but on a personal level I'm not.

"Away from his job Thompson is fine and I'm sure Houllier is the same.

"However, I still wish he hadn't walked in that door at the start of the 1998 season.

"Houllier never gave me any respect."

Houllier's legacy at Liverpool was tainted by his final years in charge as The Reds failed to conduct a sustained challenge for the title, although Fowler feels that the Frenchman also has to answer the charge of restricting the development of home grown talent.

The likes of David Thompson and Dominic Matteo were disposed of as Houllier scoured the continent for recruits, and Fowler believes that the new Lyon manager betrayed the mission statement handed to him on his arrival at Liverpool.

"At Anfield we had a fantastic young squad that needed guiding through and I was told that the clear instruction to Houllier was to make that happen," Fowler continued.

"Instead he spent well over a hundred million on bringing in foreign players and sold off nearly all the young internationals and prospects that he had inherited

Interesting take on the Owen saga from the Guardian:

"Benítez right to worry that Owen is not the man for the job

Monday August 22, 2005
The Guardian

As Liverpool prepare for yet another match in their bid to retain the European Cup they won so famously in Istanbul, everyone at Anfield appears to have lost their marbles, with the exception of the manager Rafael Benítez.

Liverpool, who face CSKA Sofia tomorrow evening in the second leg of their third-round qualifying tie, are in love with Michael Owen once more and it is easy to see the player making an emotional return to the club.

The fans want him back. So, it seems, does the chairman. And the case for Owen was strengthened by the listless performances of the Liverpool forwards against Sunderland on Saturday.

Now, Benítez did not impress everyone when he took over at Liverpool. That too-short, skimpy little coat did not help, nor did the Spaniard's English.

But he has proved to be a shrewd manager. And he knows, like most Premiership managers, that Owen is not the player he was. He would certainly struggle if he played alone up front, which is often the method preferred by Benítez.

But can the manager hold back the red tide of enthusiasm for the player whose pace had clearly diminished well before he left Liverpool for Real Madrid, where he struggles to get a game under Wanderley Luxemburgo ?

Mmmm.. struggling for pace.. losing his touch I wonder is emotion overtaking common sense here folks.

In the Boss I trust. :)

Real Madrid had to change the way they played to suit Michael Owen whenever he was on the pitch. Benitez will not change his system to suit Owen if we buy him.

Owen Owen,
His games for madrid are not flowin,
he wants out of madrid,
but he's definately not goin!
cause maureen, and ferige
dont need a midget,
neither does rafa
cause he wont  even fit into the new junior size liverpool kit!

he's small
and ok on the ball,
he scores the odd goal
but for leaving LFC he is an A**hole!

who knows whether MO will return in the next few days but i don't think we can definitively say Rafa would not want him - 1) we know Rafa likes the idea of having an English core to the team, 2) by the time he got here last year the situation was out of control and 12 months on as long as any return is on Rafa's terms perhaps he does not mind having MO around, 3) at some stage (think when we signed Moro) it was banded about that Rafa had asked the opinion of senior Liverpool players - Carra and Stevie have already made it clear where they stand on MO, 4) as far as not changing systems goes to accomodate strikers - well the system was surely changed to accomodate Moro and Crouch - crosses in to the box is not something we saw much of last year - think different matches need different systems and hence players, thus the possible interest in MO.

the next few days will no doubt reveal all... roll on!
