Seriously though I think if LFC are baulking at paying the £12 million it would cost for MO we have NO CHANCE of getting Saviola ??? The player (Saviola) hasn't expressed a wish to play for us and I don't think he's interested tbh but we can but dream  :p

But Saviola hasn't played for Barca for 2 seasons now, he's been on loan at Monaco and now at Saville, I think he would know Rafa and if we came in for him then I think he would love to play with Spainish players like Alonso, Garcia (ex Barca) and Nando.

True :) Too similar a player to garcia for me but i admit I haven;t seen a  great deal of him.

Not just after today but thinking with honesty about last seaosn and the amount of goals scored we need an out and out goalscorer who will all but guarnatee us 15-20 goals a season and for me that man is Michael Owen :)

I would have to (unfourtanetly :D ) agree with Dalglish here. I think the midfield is capable of chipping in the goals, Cisse imo can score plenty of goals but Owen is a goal player.

While we do need to strenghten our defence (and we will) if you score more goals than you let in...
Didn't like the way he left, but that's history.

good shout bigmick-owen is the talk of the day-
I like many at the time felt really peeved by the way he left us in the lurch-

My opinion now is that a world class striker who would give us at the very least a 20 goal a season return can only be a good move- add to this the fact that it would be a win win situation - there is no risk involved here-world class-no settling in time-hit the ground running-hungry-

remember Rushy!

Owen can only bring the title that bit closer

Lets hope we get him sooner rather than later

Some how my resolve over this affair is taking a turn for the worst, I on one hand hear what the Boss is saying and on the other i hear optimist views that he will come back either way i will be glad when the saga is over and done with so my headaches go away :D

How many times does Rafa have to say he's not interested in strikers?  It's not even as if he always plays them in twos.  I'll bet many games this season see a 4-4-1-1, with Luis Garcia/Kewell/others in the hole and only one recognised striker on the pitch.

I refer the Right-Honourable gentleman to the answer I gave a couple of weeks ago.

Latest news on Owen

From the Times

Owen set for Anfield return
By Matt Dickinson

LIVERPOOL ARE BRACED for days of haggling with Real Madrid as they seek to bring Michael Owen back to Anfield. The Spanish club want £16 million — twice what they paid — for the England forward, but Rick Parry, Liverpool’s chief executive, hopes to reduce it to £12 million, with the payments spread over a few years.

Formal negotiations between the clubs should start this week as soon as Liverpool have recouped some funds from the departure of Milan Baros to Aston Villa. The Czech Republic forward should move to the Midlands for about £6.5 million.

Although Rafael Benítez, the Liverpool manager, has emphasised that a centre half is his priority, he recognises that Owen’s return to Anfield would improve his team. Although Benítez has international forwards in Fernando Morientes, Peter Crouch and Djibril Cissé, Owen’s pedigree as a proven Premiership goalscorer should ensure that he is first choice.

Benítez did not beg Owen to stay on Merseyside when he took over last summer, but by then it was apparent that the player was looking to move. Despite rumours to the contrary, the pair parted on good terms, so there are no obstacles to a deal apart from the financial restrictions that mean that Liverpool will try to drive a hard bargain — particularly having sold Owen for £8 million 12 months ago.

Liverpool had hoped to persuade Real to accept a loan deal with a view to a permanent transfer but, with Newcastle United able to offer cash for Owen, they will almost certainly have to pay now. Parry is likely to offer £6 million up front, with the rest to follow over the remainder of the player’s contract.

A return to Anfield is not the only option available to Owen, but it is by far the most attractive. England’s leading goalscorer among the present squad, who is scheduled to join up with his national team-mates today before Wednesday’s friendly against Denmark in Copenhagen, is willing to consider Newcastle, but only on loan and only if the Liverpool deal collapses.

(McDonalds Buccaneers) have registered their interest in informal talks with Owen’s representatives. Sir Alex Ferguson is a long-term admirer and the Glazer family are eager to back the manager with funds but a holding midfield player is top of the shopping list at Old Trafford before the end of the transfer window on August 31.

Owen, who was in Hungary for a friendly with Real last night, may have to be patient as the clubs negotiate. The deal may not be concluded for at least a week but Gary Lineker, the former England forward and now BBC pundit, is convinced that the player will be back in the Premiership by the end of the month. “Trust me,” Lineker wrote in his newspaper column. “Owen is coming home.”

Real’s purchase of Robinho and Júlio Baptista has all but ensured Owen’s departure and Lineker compared the player’s predicament with the end of his time in Barcelona. “Football clubs, unfortunately, have a habit of playing silly devils in such situations,” Lineker said. “No one ever told me — as I am sure they have not told Owen — that I was unwanted but their actions make it perfectly clear that is the case.

“They say you should never go back but Owen would slot straight in at a club he knows so well, and he would be returning to the European champions — hardly a step down from Madrid, whereas a move to Newcastle would seem that way.”

£12 million and giving them a profit is hardly good business.

Having said that, we do miss a consistent goalscorer.

GERRARD WANTS OWEN BACK
Liverpool Echo 15 August 2005

Steven Gerrard today admitted it would be a nightmare if Michael Owen joins any Premiership club but Liverpool before the transfer deadline.

The Anfield skipper is making no secret of his desire to be reunited with the striker as speculation surrounding the Real Madrid star reaches fever pitch.

Liverpool remain Owen's chosen destination, although there are several hurdles to overcome to make it happen.

Newcastle have muddied the waters, reducing the prospects of an initial loan deal by vowing to outbid any Premier-ship rivals, despite being told Owen doesn't want to go to St James' Park.

Gerrard is hoping Owen's preference to rejoin his old club will prove decisive.

"It goes without saying I would love Michael Owen back here and think everyone at the club would love him back," Gerrard told the ECHO.

"Obviously it's up to Real Madrid. He's their player and they'll decide if he can go, but when I see Michael in the England squad this week I won't even have to ask him where he'd like to be in a few weeks.

"I'm waking up every morning, looking in the papers and hoping to read he's on his way here. Could you imagine him coming back to Anfield and scoring against us for another club? It would be a nightmare. "Whoever signs him guarantees themselves 20 goals and, in my opinion, the best striker in the league."

The Liverpool skipper accepted some of the blame for the Reds' failure to take one of several chances in the 0-0 draw at Middlesbrough.

But Gerrard insisted there was enough evidence at The Riverside to suggest pre-season optimism is not misplaced.

"Everything was perfect apart from the fact we didn't score," said Gerrard. "The manager told us to match them until half-time and keep a clean sheet and then we'd create lots of chances in the last 30 minutes. That's how it went, but we missed our opportunities."

Aston Villa are closing in on Milan Baros and hope to conclude a deal this week for around 7 million. Meanwhile, Florent Sinama-Pongolle should make his comeback from cruciate knee surgery as Liverpool Reserves kick off the campaign against Everton at Wrexham tomorrow.
