Morientes - How long do we give him to perform?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

How long will Rafa give Morientes to improve his form this season? We need to score lots of goals consistently in the Premiership if we want to close the gap and we can't really afford the time for a player to settle in this critical position. Any ideas?

This was done yesterday in the Advanced Debate section so I'm leaving this up for now.  It had better rival the one Bigmick started in post quality to warrant staying on here.

Hmm, i dunno if its impatience, the guy did have a lot of games last season albeit interupted by being cup tied.  Granted he wasnt gonna be the sharpest after spending so much time out at Real in first half of season but did you see the Crystal Palace away game?

Like all strikers his record will depend on how much ammo he gets fed from midfield and we werent (still arent?) the best side at attacking from out wide.  Its obvious the guy has a lot of class but we cant afford to carry non scoring strikers anymore, but dont jump on his back if he isnt getting the service!  Remember Cisse cost more than twice as much.

Basically im sitting on the fence here lol, but i do hope we can look back on this thread in 6 months time and have a good laugh when we have the top 2 scorers in the EPL!!

Rafa knows Nando's strengths and that he thrives on being fed by wide men.

Last season (and still, Zenden apart to some extent) we had no out and out wingers.

Rafa has secured Zenden and is close to getting Figo.  This will make a huge difference to Morientes IMO.

Against TNS, Zenden added a cutting edge down the left and I think Nando will thrive on this type of service once he's into the season and lost his rustiness.

He's proven class and I think that will show this season.

Hopefully he will. Though he didnot do too well against TNS. Let's hope for better tonight against Levekersen. We will give him some more time.

Nando looked very rusty against TNS but did anybody really expect otherwise? He hasn't played since god-knows-when and he was up against a resolute bunch of lads playing the match of their careers and giving 200% whereas our lads subconciously must've known it was all a formality. He was playing up front alongside Le Tallec which was also a first for both players, so I can think of plenty of reasons why he had a poor game. I'm still not totally covinced about him and expect this coming season to be make-or-break for him, but with better service from the wings form Zenden and (possibly) Figo then I expect him to bag himself at least 15 goals

What do you mean how long do we give him?

He scored V tns, although disallowed, he found the net! 2 V Wrexham, and he won golden boot for Monaco.

I think you are talking out of your backside lad, this is not another heskey we are talking about, and we gave him at least 4 years!

We need the wingers, like Zenden, and Figo, along with Alonso Garrard, Garcia etc to put them in on goal, good crosses etc. Im expecting 25 + from nando this term,

Cisse and Baros are the strikers to look out for this season. Cisse in particular. I think he is No.1 striker at Liverpool for next season.

Fernando will be used like Vieri was at Inter. For experience, for the last 30-20 min, start a quiet a few games (not all), used in big games etc. I dont think he will score more goals than Cisse. If its a 4-4-2 then Id bet its Cisse and Baros upfront, unless he wants to use Garcia as that 5th Mf and support Striker inbetween role.

What about Chelski, mate?

Seems like nobody of note really wants to go there, and only second tier players are willing to go but their club will try to wring out every last million to allow their players to go to Chelsea. City just rejected a 20 million bid for Wright-Phillips and Lyon is holding out for a whopping 30 million for Essien.

Perhaps Chelski can get Wright -Phillips and/or Essien cheaper...if Roman bought these 2 clubs and force the issue at their respective board level. :D

BTW, I don't see Drogba as a failure, he creates a lot of havoc with his physical, allowing Lampard & Co to steal goals on so many occassions.

I agree that he deserves to be given more time, he is class and will prove it.
But there is no way he will get 25 goals, he drops off deep too much for that.
He will play just of the main striker imo, not sure whether that will be Cisse yet or Crouch.

Sorry mate but thats b@llocks.
Baros will NOT start, not a chance. Rafa wants him out, we might not be able to get rid of him but there is no way that he will be in the top 3 options in rafas selection.
To say that Morientes will be a bit part sub as well is wide of the mark as well.
He is obviously Rafas favourite and if fit imo will start virtually every match.

Wright Phillips is the only creative player City have. Thus, its understandable that they will not let him go. Also it appears he wants to stay with them, and another factor is that his Father played for Arsenal, which if it has any meaning would favour a move there. Anyway, IMO we do not need him as we have 9 Midfielders and Joe, Duff and Robben are quite capable of playing on the right. However he is a very good player and would be a good signing IF it does happen. But like I said, I dont think we need him so im not disappointed that he isnt coming.

The Essien deal is done. I expect him to be announced as a Chelsea player soon. He has made it clear that he wants to play for us next season and that his time with Lyon is over. They will obviously make it difficult because he is a key player for them, they want to hold on to him and they will try and squeez as much money as they can.

Drogba did create a lot of havoc, a lot of space for our midfielders and he did end up scoring 16 goals. However, he did not live up to what was expected, he missed 600 chances but scored 16, he was lacklustuer, he was indecisive, he also was injured. Anyway, I dont think he is worth 24M, but I do expect him to improve this season and with Crespo back he will surely up his game to compete for that starting spot.

You might be right about Baros not starting and Fernando being Rafa's favourite, and thats fine. All I was trying to say is, IMHO a CIsse-Baros partnership, if a 4-4-2 (straight or daimond) is employed, has potential to become one of the most lethal partnerships in the League. You have to remember Fernando is 29 (i think) and hs definetaly past his best. He is of the pace and I doubt he will last the entire season, I do like him as a player and would love to see him succeed, which im sure he will, but I just wanted to say that Cisse-Baros 'could' tear the League apart with their pace, small man big man relation and explosive shots.

Fair point about Fernandos age but dont think pace has ever been a factor in his game anyway.
Baros and Morientes might be a decent strike force, if nando played off Milan as his awareness and unselfishness would create openings for any player, i myself would prefer Cisse to Baros though, i think he is far more likely to form a partnership and an understanding.
Milan is too thoughtless imo to form a GREAT partnership with anyone.
