My thoughts, for what they are worth are this.
Michael Owen back at Liverpool would have been nice.
Paying twice the amount we sold him for, not nice. Especially when we've only actually received £4million from Real.
Michael Owen demanding assurances from Rafa of regular first team football, not nice, especially after Michael ignored the pleas of Rafa, who had flown to the England Team HQ especially to try and persuade him to stay at Liverpool.
I feel sorry for Michael, he obviously wants the best for his career, and he ends up at Newcastle. He is guaranteed first team football there, certainly. So is Shearer, but for all his time there he hasn't won anything. Has he?
Michael has protected himself anyway, if the stories are to be believed. Get out clauses galore.
I don't blame Rafa for digging his heels in and not bowing to Michael's demands for guaranteed first team selection. Who the feck does he think he's dealing with? The man he fobbed off in his rush to go to Real, that's who. No regular place no England place, hence his desire to join Liverpool or stay at Real or join Newcastle for a one year loan deal. Poor Michael. Real's greedy eyes lit up when a desperate Newcastle offered £17million. Of course they would sell him! Poor Liverpool can't afford him, nor his wage demands. How much is Steven Gerrard on? It makes for a flexible team to build it around a particular style of midfielder than a particular style of striker. Michael must have thought he was on to good thing publicly stating he only wanted to go back to Liverpool, note he didn't want Arsenal or Chelsea? Also note that they didn't want him. Does anyone know why? Does the rotation system have anything to do with it and that only certain defenders or midfielders seem immune from it?
For myself, I am glad that we have a manager that knows his own mind and wont be pushed into doing anything he doesn't want to do. For Rafa's sake, I hope Morientes justifies his faith in him this season, because if this thread is anything to go by, the naysayers will have a field day.
I also reckon that Rafa will only regret losing Michael if Newcastle finish above us in 4th place.
After last season, I look to this one with a lot more hope than in previous years.
