I thought we would be listing players who have indicated that they want to leave their current squads and wish to play or remain in the Premiership, not list players who have not made any comments of that kind and we just list any class player on here that we would like but have no chance of getting. Defoe would not go anywhere for 6million (Tottenham are not that stupid), Thruham is not going to leave Juventus for anyone (They are top of the Italian league right now), Mexes has not indicated he would wish to leave Roma and despite their debts, they are currently attempting to tie all their top level players to longer deals (including Mexes), there is no way Middlesborough are going to let Downing go and why should we want him?? He has had some good games in the Premiership, but he flopped at International level and he has not yet proven himself. Two more seasons, maybe, but not right now. Christian Vieri??? That is a joke. Yes, he does have issues with Inter, but do you really think Morientes and Cisse were brought in to sit on the bench? They are both first choice strikers, if you don't play them, they will want to leave and as they both haven't had much playing time under Benitez, it is unlikely he will bring in someone like Vieri who would demand a first team spot. Boumsong? He just joined Newcastle and Souness is happy with him so that is a big no. Toldo, no again. Yes, he is having issues at not being first choice but have you seen him play? He is not first choice for a reason!!!!! Why do we want another average keeper?? Dellas would be a nice addition, but he again is a No. He has made it very clear that he wants to stay with Roma and Roma have opened contract talks with him.

Realistic (not pie in the sky) options are as follows..........

Aimar - Currently at Valencia - Has already issued a 'come and get me plea' to Benitez. This would be a certainty especially if Gerrard leaves and Valencia agree to sell. Fitting Gerrard, Alonso and Aimar would be difficult though, due to Aimar being a central attacking midfielder.

Marek Mintal - Currenty at FC Nurnberg - Top scorer in Bundesliga with 22 league goals even though he is in a standard midfield position and playing for a team which are just outside a religation place. Liverpool have already bid 4million euros for him.

Kuffour - Currently at Bayern Munich. Highly rated center back. His contract runs out this summer so he is avaliable on a Bosman free. He has said he would like to play in the premiership. Although it is said he favours Arsenal, Liverpool are also said to be in the running.

Joao Moutinho - Currently at Sporting Lisbon, this 18 year old was the shock star that helped knock Newcastle and Middlesborough out of the UEFA cup. He is a very highly rated defensive midfielder (a suitable replacement for Hamman who may leave). Liverpool have already made contact with Sporting and are in the lead to sign him.

Reina - Currently at Villareal. Goalkeeper whose amazing displays are one of the main reasons Villareal are in a Champions League position in the Spanish La Liga. Unfortunately, Man U are looking at him too, but you would hope Benitez's connections in Spain could put us in the front running.

Juanito - Currently at Malaga. Contract runs out in the summer so avaliable on a Bosman free. Both Liverpool and Deportivo have sent scouts serveral times to watch the Defender.

Fernando Torres - Currently at Athletico Madrid - Madrid have big financial problems and they are said to be willing to sell their star player. His price would exceed £12million. Benitez has been a long admirer of Torres and Torres is happy to play in an attacking role behind the front two strikers which would be Morientes and Cisse.

Emre - Currently at Inter Milan - Emre has kept Davids on the bench with his performances. Emre has stated he is leaving Inter this summer no matter what and as he will have 12 months left on his contract this summer, Inter are unlikely to say no and loose him for nothing in 12months time. With this little time on his contract, the transfer fee will be resonable. He has said he admires the premiership and he would only go to a top team. With Liverpool being in the semi-finals of the Champions league, we are a definate possibility.

Sensible post mate

IMO though, Torres is unrealistic and I would add SWP to your list of realistic targets

Riquelme was immense for Villareal in the UEFA Cup last week, what passing and footwork.

Smart post. I'd agree with a lot of that.

Out:
Dudek
Traore
Biscan
Vignal
Smicer
Diao
Diouf
Cheyrou
Mellor

In:
Alou Diarra - love to see what he can do
Shay Given or Carlo Cudicini
Upson
Vicente
SWP
Owen
Baraja if Gerrard goes

According to some good posters on here, we get 20m for this year's CL run. If we sell Gerrard, that's another 30m. Even if we get 38m of that for transfers, that is all the above players paid for.

Talking to a mate of mine who's a season-ticket Gooner, he reckons Upson was the fastest player at Arsenal after Henry. Reason Wenger let him go was cos he was injury prone at the time; he hasn't been an injury case now for 2 or 3 seasons.

Team for next year:

Given/Cudicini
Finnan
Upson
Carragher
Riise
SWP
Alonso
Gerrard/Baraja
Vicente
Morientes
Owen

subs:
Cisse
Carson
Hyypia
Hamann
Garcia

There are a few players mentioned on here that I just wanted to give my view on:

Ledley King - This guy would command a mammoth fee. £15-20MIL, this would put a huge dent in our budget, and in my opinion he is not worth that much.

SWP - This guy will command a similar fee, close to £20MIL, again I don’t think he is worth that much.

Aimar - I don’t think Rafa will sign him, because he plays in the same role as Garcia.

Owen - He is not coming back. If he was to move I wouldn’t be surprised if all of the top 3 took an interest.

Baraja - The only way we could get him is if we could guarantee him a first team place.

Upson - Not better than what we already have.

Mexes - Has only been at Roma a season. Don’t think he is that good anyway, Hyypia is better.

Stuart Downing - Unrealistic target, wont leave this summer, when he does leave don’t be surprised to see Arsenal and Man Utd battle it out for his signature.

Jermaine Defoe - Again would command a massive fee, £15MIl+. If he did start making noises a year down the line he may be a realistic target if none of the big three were interested.

Robbie Keane - Not better than Baros, who will be sold. Will go to a worse club not a better one.

Andrew Johnson - Not top quality, will struggle to have the same impact next season, only scored 9 goals from open play.

Christian Vieri - Fantastic striker in his prime. But now is a fat lazy lump.

heres the team that i think we can realistically manage to obtain for next season, considering we dont qualify for champs league and gerrard leaves for 30 mil--

carson/kirkland  -   wouldnt mind which one

rb-   finnan-   been class this season, but would love us to sign daniel from sevilla,  the guy is class,  next cafu

lb-wayne bridge-  i think with 7-8 million bid we may be able to buy him, traore been quite good this season but he will never be world class

cb-carragher--  what can i say?  awesome

cb- ledley king -   just the guy we need, fast, strong, and english.   keeps the english backbone of the team which is so important

MR-  jaoquin-  not sure if we could afford him, but i heard that he has a 20 million release clause so we can use the 30 million spent from gerrard.   love him, top player, would give us great width

ML- luis garcia/kewell  -  garcia has really been coming together the last few months and looks a real good player and one day could even be world class, as for kewell i still believe he can produce his best as long as he has surgery to fix his injury

MC- xabi alonso-   this guy can take us places, what a gem and i think hes a better player than gerrard even though they have different styles of play, hes just such and important player for the team.  love him

mc- davids- a bit controversial here but i think he would bring so much to the team, especially in experience.  i know what some of you guys are gonna say that we have no attacking midfielders, but with joaquin and garcia in the wing plus our strikers, i think that may be enough.

cisse -  love his passion and determination and i think he will be great next season
morientes-  will be a 20 goal striker next season, too good not to be able to adapt to the english game

so basically players coming in are

davids free transfer  (i think)
joaquin  20 mil
daniel 6-7 mil
king  12-13 mil
wayne bridge - 6-7 mil

that means we will be spending around 45 mil which we should be able to afford with the sale of gerrard and some other players

what do you guys think about this team?

I can't put a team together of foreign players as my knowledge compared to some of the lads on here is miniscule. I would though look at Baraja who has always looked like a fantastic player whenever I have seen him.
Overall though, the one player I would absolutely dig down to the seam of my pockets and shove my hand down the back of the sofa to prise out every penny available to buy would be Ledley King. He might, just might make the difference for us next season. 15 million or so but worth it in my view.

Mick: I wouldn't put yourself down so quickly.

Many of the people that post in these type of threads have gleamed their "knowledge" from Championship Manager or Football Manager, or some of the players suggested, such as Mintal, Reina and Moutinho, are fellows that we've been linked with in the papers. If a guy here goes "I've been watching this guy Mintal for years and I reckon we should sign him" he's lying: he read it on Skysports.com.

I don't remember anyone suggesting Xabi Alonso as a transfer target this time last season and I'd be very surprised if people here will name the signings we make in the summer.

I'd definitely take Cudicini if he's available. We haven't had a great keeper since Clemence (Grobelaar was very effective, but not great)

With James we had a good shot-stopper who leaked goals like a sieve at set-pieces, Westerveld was competent but Houllier sold him just when he was starting to grow in confidence. Dudek was brilliant for his first couple of seasons but has lost all confidence, Kirkland is a walking hospital who to be honest looks like a big f*cking fairy. Carson it has to be said looks good, I'd certainly prefer to see him than Kirkland

But if you think about the sides who've bossed the premiership for the last 10 years-

ManU - had Schmeichel at the back who was just invincible. He put the fear of death not only into opposition strikers but also his own defenders. A Collossus.

Arsenal - Seaman, had the odd high-profile howler for England late in his career, but for years did all the simple stuff right for Arsenal and could be relied upon all day long by his defenders

Blackburn - In their one year of glory they had Tim Flowers at his absolute peak

Chelsea - suddenly Petr Cech appears and they have a defence tighter than a Yorkshireman's pocket

Now to me, all the above is more than just coincidence. We need what we haven't had sice Clemence, apart from a brief  spell from Dudek- a rock solid keeper who our defenders could trust 110%

With regard to Kirkland, I sometimes feel like the proverbial kid who shouted "the emperor's got no clothes on!" but I don't rate him at all. Injuries aside, he lacks confidence and command of his area and is scared sh*tless about coming out to smother an attack. He's just, well, too frail.

So, Cudicini.... maybe he isn't necessarily the man for the job, but I was extremely impressed with him since he came through with Chelsea, and surely he can't be happy warming their bench. Whether or not Chelsea would be willing to let him go to another English side is another matter, but if they were I'd be happy to see him at Liverpool

Your thoughts gentlemen?

Cudicini is top quality and if Gerrard goes to Chelsea, we should insist on him coming as part of the deal.

Not good enough.

Theres only one class keeper in the league... Cech.

He's the main difference in Chelsea, Arsenal and United. I actualy believe if we had a keeper that good we'd have a really solid backline. The lads we have don't inspire confidence. Robinson and Given are worth a look. They're the only other two i'd touch over here. The rest aren't worth a carrot.

Owen

All players i wouldn't mind seeing here.

               Morientes    Owen
Vicente                                    Joaquin
                Alonso       Parker

Warnock     Hyypia     Carragher    Finnan

                      Canizares

Carson
Riise
Biscan
Luis Garcia
