Ballsey rescue job by Gerrard. We made hard work of Fulham due to a couple of defensive howlers. Gerrard was in the right mental place. When he scored the penalty his face said everything you need to know about a player that thinks we've still got a chance of the title.

Bout time he turned up, we are only in February like!
if he hadn't have put that ball through for Sturridge I think we would have lost that 1-0, up until that point the game had hull, west brom, villa etc written all over it.

That's exactly the point though isn't it Yakka. Gerrard has that phenomenal capacity to "turn up" and change games. Last night admittedly he wound back the years. The pass to Danny was something very few players in the world would have achieved. No doubt if it hadn't been as good as it was it would have been criticised for being just another failed Hollywood ball. The penalty exemplified why he should always be in the team even if he is not at his best. I have made the point previously it is not just about what he does. It is also about his very presence on the pitch. Last night we witnessed all aspects of a truly brilliant player. Let's seriously forget that he should be dropped in favour of Lucas. Stevie seems to be learning his new role quite well !!

Come on Yakka you're making out like he has been woeful this season.

There are quite clearly 2 camps on this one.
The first camp think Gerrard has been really poor at times this season. Even to the extent where he has been called a liability and should be dropped.

The second think that he is not the player he once was but is still a major influence in big moments of games.
I am in that camp.
By big moments I dont mean he is smashing shots in to the top corner for 25 yards etc.
It can be through his set pieces which he has been the best in the league this season or a long through ball that makes chances.
We have scored the most goals in the league from set pieces this season and a major part of that is down to Gerrards world class delivery.
Add to that his ability to not only spot a long defence splitting ball, but also to deliver it and then you have still got someone who offers a lot.
My uncle is a season ticket holder at Stoke and he was down for new year. We got talking about Gerrard and I was telling him about the split the fans now appear to have as to his importance. He was shocked and said yous should treasure him while you still have him and then said he hoped he didnt play against them.
If this side is going to keep pushing for the champions league and hopefully more the presence of Gerrard in the team is one that for me is vital. Both because of his ability and also for the effect his name on the team sheet has on the opposing team.

Think he's lifted his game a lot and being a lot more vocal off the pitch since he's realised that maybe we can actually achieve things this year.

He's been immense.

i have to admit to having had doubts as well myself. after some laboured early season performances (though not without moments of excellence), and then his dismal first showing in the deeper defensive role i was wondering whether his time was coming to an end. but since the derby he has been absolutely magnificent in every way. long may it continue.
