Brendan Rodgers thread (signs extended contract)

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

We seem better than we have since the prem started, we are more consistent than we have been and when we play we are more enjoyable to watch than ever. We are beating teams we should and giving a go to teams that should beat us. We have progressed so far but have lost a little defensively which is my only worry. I was Raffa's biggest fan and still feel he was hard done by and should always be honoured for helping get rid of the previous owners, but This manager has re- molded us into a very good team. The players are young and the writing on the wall suggests this manager will be around for a while which is just what we need.

Rafa was a wa*ker.

Rodgers is doing a good job so far. Needs to sort out the defence big time though. Need a centre half, right back and goalkeeper.

Could also do with a midfielder and a right attacking player of extreme quality.

If we can get anything in for Skrtel, Johnson and Aspas then hopefully we'll have a decent wad to spend on some good players.

Not sure how you can call Benitez that. He got us to 2 CL finals and another semi final in the space of 4 years, not to mention just being pipped at the post in the league by a united side with a forward line of christiano Ronaldo, Carlos tevez and Wayne Rooney ( a united side BTW that we beat home and away including a 4-1 win at old Trafford)
With Benitez in charge we beat the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid, Chelsea, Juventus, Arsenal, A.C Milan, Inter Milan, Marseilles, Bayer Leverkusen (who were the German champions at the time) and PSV, and he done all that after inheriting a club in crisis.
Benitez is one of the greatest managers we've ever had.

Like I've said, he had a personality transplant during his second season, I also have personal reasons. As do most of the people I know, who knew him both personally and professionally.

Not discussing him on this thread, the Spaniard is part of the history and I'm absolutely made up it looks like its going to stay that way. if you want to know why I think the way I do you're more than welcome to PM me and I'll tell you exactly why, other than that, would much rather talk about the current regime.

Brilliant. How come we never heard of your personal relationship with Rafa until now?

I agree that Rafa was one of the best managers we've ever had. Except for his last season in charge, we won the CL in his debut season and qualified for CL every season. To get rid of him after one flop season was a bit harsh I'd say.

Now back to Brendan. I have no doubt he has improved the team but many of his signings have been average players ie Aspas, Borini, Assaidi, Alberto, Cissokho. Our squad is not deep enough to win the PL. Top 3 places IMO are for Chelsea, City and Arsenal, these 3 are in a league of their own at the moment but 4th will be a fight to the finish between us, Everton, manure and Spurs. It looks like BR will not be heavily funded to get players who can walk straight into the first team. It is common knowledge among Liverpool faithfuls that we desperately need reinforcements in left and right back positions, a creative midfielder and another striker in case SAS gets injured at the very least to stand any chance of finishing 4th in this Jan window. So far, nothing. Why? Because the owners are not going to fund it for reasons known only to them. My explanation to that is, they are building for the future and that's why we're interested in the likes of W.Hughes(Derby) and more youngsters on the cheap. I am not against that, but what about our top 4 ambition this season? If we don't make it, I can guarantee that LS will be rumbling again and blatantly and vocally sending out signals to all clubs with CL with the 'Come and Get Me!!!!' message and when he leaves, that will set our clock back by another 3 seasons while waiting for our kids to mature.

In BR's first interview, he said and I quote "If I left Swansea, it would be for a top club but then I would have to be their first choice", end quote. Well, he was half right. A top club is a club with the ambition to win the PL every season which we are but a top club is a club where the manager is backed with the funds that he needs and as far as I can see, we are not such a club.

I disagree....

Rafa is our past and this is not the thread to discuss him. But I agree with Stu... we are lucky to be finally rid of him.

BR is doing ok... He is slowly winning me over. As far as the defence is concerned, I think he got desperately unlucky with the injuries and loss of form of our left and right backs. Our center backs have to cover for their deficiencies. Cissokho has been an absolute disaster and i curse the day that Enrique got injured.... I saw a bright spot when Flanno was playing and had hope... In fact our defense looked a lot stronger when he was in it... and then he got hurt. Johnson has been a problem from day 1 and the less said about him the better.

I actually rate Sakho and Toure. If everybody had been free of injury, we could have lined up with a more than half decent defence comprising of Flanno, Toure, Sakho and Enrique. Skrtel really needs to go... he is a liability. Agger is just way too fragile. Lastly, for the defense.... i am perplexed on why we have not used Illori. Not having had a chance to watch him, i am guessing that he is not impressing in training. So his performance in defense i would grade at a B-. A little unlucky with injuries and a major c0ck up with cisshoko.

In midfield, he needs to do better. He did not strengthen us enough here. Coutinho has obviously been a success. With Allen he got a little unlucky with injuries but truth be told, the lad is good but not good enough for us IMO. He inherited Hendo so can't take credit for that though perhaps Hendo's development can be attributed to him somewhat. Alberto was bought but is simply underutilized. Again, he will know better he sees him in training but buying him and not using him points to a bad judgement call. Lucas has not been the same since his injury. So I don't feel that he has done enough to improve the midfield quality. We probably have remained stagnant if not regressed slightly here... a C-.

In attack he has done well with the addition of Sturridge. I actually think that Aspas is not that bad... our system doesn't suit him as much. We need another one as 3 strikers are simply not enough. But overall, the addition of sturridge has improved us no end. So a B+.

Overall I am slowly liking what he has done for us. I still think the removal of Dalglish was ill handled by the club but that is hardly BR's fault. Slowly, I am beginning to like what he has done and he has improved with how he represents the club in the press. His handling of the post Man City refreeing issues were apalling though. We were robbed but you cannot insinuate that the referee was partisan (at best) or crooked (at worst). Point to specific issues when in the public forum. Raise the geographical concerns to the FA in private (but officially documented) would have been a better way to do it, IMO.

You have to remember with Stu. Once she gets her knickers in a twist with a certain player, that's it there's no going back.
