PEPE REINA - Official Thread

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

I would be happy if he wanted to stay for now. He is one of few keepers that has ever managed the pressure of playing at LFC. People whine about him but what about all the failures before him?

James, Kirkland, Westerveld, Dudek etc All clearly worse and made quite a few howlers to boot. If Reina leaves we might have to go through a whole bunch of keepers again just to find one that can do it.

Reina has been terrific but you do have to keep doing it and there is no doubt he is
going backwards at this point.

Football is a hard game and especially for goalies and the reality is Reina is on rocky
ground and needs to stay out of trouble for the rest of sesaon or the club will be
casting eyes elsewhere, and probably have already.

Hope he can turn it round but just too many errors, far too many.

Second goal yesterday seemed to go straight through him. I'll be honest, I don't think his heart not in it and for me it's time for him to move on and for us to bring in a replacement

i wouldnt blame the keeper for that mate, any time a keeper finds himself one on one with a striker he`s not the favourite so to blame reina for their second is a bit harsh imo.
the way i see that goal was that reina was left badly exposed by some leaden footed defending infront of him.
reina actually pulled off one of the best saves i`ve ever seen him make last night when he dived grobbellaar style to tip a long range effort around the post.
i`ve been critical of some of reina`s performances over the past 2 seasons myself but there were far worse performers than him on that pitch yesterday.

yeah, it looks like valdez is leaving so they might well opt for reina, he`s experienced and even played for them before (early on in his career) so they may see him as a steady pair of hands.
the only concillation is that there does seem to be quite a few decent keepers around at the moment, obviously we dont know how they`ll cope with the pressure of playing for us but there`s a number of keepers playing well atm.
in the prem you have the likes of begovic (who is getting rave reviews), vorm, mignolet, krull and even the lad who plays for southampton who was at celtic - boruc (sp?), any one of those could probably do a job.
apparently there`s a couple of brilliant prospects playing in germany as well.
obviously i wouldnt like to go through the hassle of losing reina in case the new keeper turns into a bag of nerves once he steps through the doors here but the truth is for the past 2 seasons he hasnt been at his best, 4 years ago he was irreplacable, i dont think he`s irreplacable now.

i really hope he stays, we might not have much to spend in the summer and for what pepe would fetch we would have to dip into the kitty on top of it to replace him.
if we do find ourselves in that situation then id go for vorn rather than a journeyman like cesar or some wet behind the ear young lad.
pepe's form has dipped but he is still good enough and with a good dominant CH in front of him, he could be great again.

Let the lad go, he's given his all.  He lost heart when Alonso and Masherano left, had to endure the demise of Rafa and was stabbed in the back by H&G's false promises. He played for the shirt, a true red and a pleasure to watch him at his peak.

We rate Pepe too much - he can definitely be replaced. What will be missed is his personality and loyalty, both of which were waning though recently anyway.
