Psst, We haven't finished in the top four, or even been close for four years.

i havent seen one poster say fourth place is in the bag or anything remotely like that, all people are saying is that we have an outside chance, which is true.

Since Souness stepped down, we've had Evans, Houllier, Rafa as managers who managed to finish in top 4 during most of their tenure and what happened to them? They were all terminated. Now we have BR as manager who will most likely finish mid table or somewhere above mid table at best and I am 100% certain he will not receive the same treatment as those 3 former managers. This shows how low Liverpool have sunk, those 3 were fired because they couldn't win the league, now we have a manager who will finish mid table and will still be kept.

I am not anti BR, he could be the next B.Shankly given ample time, it's possible but appointing him last summer was a huge gamble because he has no track record of winning any trophies and in fact his CV looks bad, fired at Reading and finished mid table with Watford. We are dicing with the unknown here in appointing BR. I am still in the opinion that firing Rafa was a grave mistake. Look at his track record, he won the La Liga twice, World Club Cup, FA Cup and of course the CL trophy and just one bad season finishing 7th was enough to cost him his job. Can BR finish 7th this season? It will be difficult.

So we now have a young manager with potential but who is not the finished article yet to manage a side like Liverpool with high expectations. To me, it just doesn't fit. A club like Liverpool needs to appoint a high profile manager like Rafa was in 2004.

As you say, its a reflection of the weakened position we're in.  We'll be back, that's not exclusive to Arnie.

Who would you have appointed? I really don't think we could have done much better than BR.

We could have re-appointed Rafa as he was a free agent at the time when BR was appointed and we didn't have to compensate millions to any club like we did with BR. Rafa did say when KD was still manager that he would love to manage Liverpool again when KD retires and I'm sure had he received a call from FSG, he would have grabbed the chance.

Anyway, now that we have BR, we have to support him and let's see where he'll take the club at the end of his 3 year contract. If we still struggle to finish 7th by then like now, then FSG and their man BR must go.

Its a dam site harder to finish in the top four now than it was even 5 years ago, with a rejuvinated Spurs and the mega bucks at City. To make comparisons to Souness, Evans and Houlier is pointless. We are moving in the right direction and if we don't make top 4 this season I am confident we will next. With regard to Rafa, he's not exactly setting Chelsea on fire is he. his last two appointments haven't exactly been successful and since Kenny's second tenure I am pretty reluctant to support any further second comings. I don't believe we will be struggling to finish 7th by the end of BR's contract but if we are i doubt he would still be here.

It's staggering how AVB wasn't first choice ahead of Rodgers .

So what you are saying is that if a new manager does not finish in the top four in his first season he should be fired?

I hope we will qualify for CL next season too mate, but then it all depends on many factors, to name some, can we keep Suarez, are the owners willing to fund to get the players Brendan wants, will Brendan's signings be better and able to deal with all the physical sides like Stoke, WBA, Oldham who can easily beat the current Liverpool side?

Back to Rafa, yes, Chelsea are not exactly flying high, but they're still in Europa Cup, FA Cup and still in contention for top 4 finish, something which we are either out or won't qualify. Had we been in those 3 competitions under him, I'm sure our fans would be satisfied. As with his Italian job, he did win the Club World Cup and he was fired because he had friction with their prresident. So I would say he did all right to say the least with his last 2 jobs.

Fook no, without Bale Spurs wouldn't be where they are, the other thing is FSG obviously wanted a manager who would stick around for a while and build on something, If AVB does well with spurs he will be off to a big European club if he is approached
