true, and to be fair arsenal even have a better run in than us on paper which will make them even harder to catch but strange things happen in footy and i wouldnt put it past them to implode on the run in, arsenal are just as flaky as us.
another thing worth considering before everyone throws the towel in is that chelsea in third place are only a point ahead of spurs, if they win their game in hand they will be 13 points ahead of us which is a huge gap but their game in hand is away at city and after that they still have to play the likes of spurs, liverpool, united and everton (in that order).
i know it`s all if`s, but`s and maybe`s but if chelsea lose against city, draw against spurs and then we beat them at anfield that gap would be down to five points and they would still have united and everton to play.
chelsea could easily get dragged into this battle, even some of the other teams they have to play arent push over`s (west brom, swansea, west ham etc)
as i said out of all the clubs fighting for a top 4 place we are definately the outsiders but it`s not beyond the realms of possibility.

Are some people still talking about top 4?
So for the 1st time this season we beat a team ahead of us in the table. Like we won't have more WBA games this seasons...
Talking about grasping for straws...

not the end of the world thommo but potentially the end of our season
i am as devoted to this club as anyone but what is is that makes you think he is any different to any other manager that has come and gone in the last 20 years with a 5 yr plan ?.
i can visit my local any night and listen to several who talk as good a game as he does if not better so i just dont get what all the fuss is about and why so many think he is the saviour of this club when he has nothing to back it up.

Well why the hell not at least think about the chances of maybe's and such.  Maybe we could just have a thread where all there is is moaning about how far we've fallen and how "shlte" we are.

But how remotely realistic is it to talk about 4th?
9 pts with 1 more game played.
3 other strong teams that have more pts that need to be overtaken.
How all off a sudden will we be able to all off a sudden win 5 games in a row when we haven't won 3 so far.
We have 1 win all season vs a team higher than us in the standings.
Once in a while we have a Oldham, WBA. Like that is all off a sudden stop going to happen.
One can dream but not coming to terms that it is going to be another midtable finish, is to be set up
for dissapointment.

But there is a big difference between thinking it's going to happen ( haven't seen anyone say that), and having some sort of glimmer of hope that it does happen.

The mental side of our game is not right.

In december, big chance to get 3 points against Villa at Anfield... get beaten.
Last week, big chance to get 3 points against west brom at Anfield.. get beat.

Relatively meaningless game against Swansea... win 5 - 0.

6 very achievable points dropped when the pressure was on.  Take them 6 points and we'd currently only be 3 off 4th I believe.

no one is saying we are definately going to finish in the top 4, what people are saying is that there is an outside chance that we could sneak in there IF results go our way and we continue to play well.
everyone knows that is a f##king big `if` but sometimes things like that happen, look at how united imploded at the end of last season, who would have thought that they would lose to wigan and blow a big lead at home to everton?

I prefer to be an optimist, even if it is unrealistic.

Mathematically it is possible to finish 4th or even 2nd. But that is to assume those guys above us will lose most of their games and we win most of ours. That is not possible at all in real life.

What difference does it make? If you believe its possible then theres nothng wrong in being positive and optimistic.
Those who are negative and pessimistic have no cause to criticise anyone who doesnt agree with them. You can be as miserable as you like, I dont mind
Until it is mathematically impossible the I will hope we can get 4th place
