Mascherano has found a new position as centre back with Barca. Is it realistic to think Gerrard could play alongside Skrtel with Agger at left back? He's never been frightened of a tackle and he could be very useful coming out of defence.

While I'm at it what about Kelly as permanent right back and Johnson moved into midfield.

Could this win us the title next season?

You are kidding me. It hasn't ceased to amaze me how many on here do not acknowledge Gerrard as a world class CM anymore. Blind if you ask me.

He has been hit with injuries no doubt but when fit there are few better, you only have to look back to last season against Napoli.

For me he is first pick in midfield still.

He is getting older and is hindered by many injuries. This season he has also been played in a position where he is a distinctly average player. Its not surprising that the Gerrard worship has cooled down a bit.

The changing face of Steven Gerrard

Steven Gerrard celebrates his 32nd birthday today and to help mark the occasion we put together a year-by-year picture special of our skipper's outstanding Liverpool career.

In 2006, Brazilian icon Pele labelled Gerrard "absolutely world class," and declared: "If I was a manager, everywhere I went, I would buy him."

Zinedine Zidane hailed the Huyton-born midfielder as the world's best in 2009, adding: "He gives the players around him confidence and belief. You can't learn that - players like him are just born with that presence."

But Thierry Henry best encapsulated Gerrard's Anfield legacy when he remarked: "For me, and I have always said this, Stevie will be regarded as one of the greatest midfielders ever when he finishes his career. No doubt.

"The guy is always putting his foot in, always scoring and doing what he has to do to make his team win. He, for me, is Liverpool."

gerrard is the best player i`ve ever seen in a red shirt, he`s not the same player he once was but for a decade he was nothing short of phenominal.
players dont start getting their proper dues until about 5 years after they have retired so this lads legend will just grow and grow and rightly so.
in 100 years time reds fans will have tears in their eyes reading about this local lad who turned down the chance to become the highest paid player in the world in order to stay with liverpool and then defy all the odds by leading them to CL glory.

Just found out today his older brother lives here in Grimsby and my missus knows him ! Apparently he asked her once how to cook a chicken !

* We can't get much further than 4) in 16 Conclusions without pouring fulsome praise on Steven Gerrard. In the wake of England's draw with France, this site's lauding of Gerrard was disparaged by Manchester United fans. Do you still want to have that argument? Gerrard has been England's man of the tournament by some distance. Against Ukraine he once again led by glorious example - he made the goal, created two other chances, found a teammate with six out of seven long balls and threw in six tackles for good measure. And beyond the statistics, he simply looked class. He has enthusiastically embraced Roy Hodgson's vision of a disciplined England - now who would ever have predicted that?

Also turns out the chicken was nice, but it ruined his new oven.

His performances with England have been very good, just hope he has a decent break before the season starts.
He actually looks fitter now than he did when playing for us last season.

He is killing himself each game and he will be fecked by the time he gets back to Liverpool - should of retired from Internationals ages ago.

He is going to spend a whole season recovering from this tournament
