He's carried us for a decade (beginning circa 2001). A large reason for that is due to our shoddy dealings in the transfer market, so when the new signings inevitably fail (or just do ok) then it comes back to relying on Stevie to pull us out of the mire.

There has never been another world class creative midfielder in his whole time at the club.. Garcia, Smicer, Murphy, Maxi, Berger, Barmby, Cheyrou, Kewell, Gonzalez, Pennant, Babel, Benayoun, Downing, Kuyt (played mostly on the right), Riera, Cole and Zenden. There not been an A grade creative midfielder, therefore the onus has routinely been on Gerrard to come up with something. Opening goal for us in League Cup final, Champions League final, an FA Cup final named after him, over 100 goals total, club's record European Cup goalscorer, since 2001 featured in 7 PL Team of the year. Without Steven the last decade would be among the worst in our history, and because no one man has ever single-handedly contributed more to us than he has (barring Billy Liddell perhaps who is on a par), he is the greatest player who has ever played for us.

Well that is a quite bold statement to make and you aint far off the mark.
The thing is in 1977 our star player decided he wanted to up sticks and try it abroad. The main man Bob went out and bought this guy (for $60,000 pound less than KK was sold for(a lot of money in that time and age)) and then continued to establish LFC as thee no.1 club side in the world.
His name; Kenny Dalglish

his name.. joined the League and European champions, then had Souness controlling midfield, had Hansen controlling defence, and then had arguably the most lethal finisher in post war British football to provide.

his name... was a very lucky boy.

Steven Gerrard, in that CL final... did the work of 4 men. The FA Cup final a year later was even more farcical...id have let him accept the trophy and walk home with it.

Steven Gerrard is not, and has never been, a central midfielder. Infact, Andy Gray has been crying for umpteen years for him to play there, which has rightly been ignored by people who know better than that clown.

Steven has always had two sitting midfielders playing behind him.. from Hamann (partnered with McAllister, Redknapp, Murphy to Alonso).. Sissoko (partnered with Alonso), and then Mascherano (partnered with Alonso). Whether hes played advanced centrally, or on the right. His goal splurge came when Alonso signed which allowed him to stay advanced... from 2004 onward Gerrard went on a goal spree as a result.

that doesn't mean that he's not a CM... basically he's a Midfielder who can play CM, AM, RM, LM and sometimes full back... because of his skill set and athleticism and game intelligence... whether or not he's more effective at a certain role depends on what kind of players are playing with him...

If he doesn't play there then yeah it does. Gary Lineker played on the wing for Barca.. but a winger he aint. You could say... Gerrard has on rare occasion played as a central midfielder (ie.first half istanbul when we got massacred).

you might want to get your facts right... Gerrard played as a CM for 4 seasons! not on rare occasions! When Gary Mac joined us Gerrard played as a RM. When Gary Mac left, he formed a partnership with CM with Hamann again! In fact most of the seasons under Houllier he was playing CM. Only when Alonso came in he was moved to a more advanced AM/free role or the RM role again. Then when Torres joined us, because of their partnership, Benitez played him as AM and kept him tere. In fact under Kenny, there are alot of times Gerrard played as CM together with Lucas... and according to you he was never a CM and never will be? :laugh:

So you agree he hasnt been a central midfielder for 7 and a half years.. and also while Gary Mac was at the club. So that leaves 2002-04. I recall many games where Murph sat back with Hamann and Gerrard (whilst indeed closer to central) was the most advanced of the three. Recall him playing on the left vs Charlton in late 2002/03.

A 2 season spell, inwhich his goal tally 13 was the lowest of his career.

There is no term advanced central midfielder.. so Gerrard often wrongly just gets lumbered into the generic term that doesnt apply to him. All i can say is thank Christ we didnt have anyone clueless like Andy Gray who whinged for many many years for him to play in central midfield.
