Pepe Reina dropped a shock hint last night that he would consider quitting Liverpool.

When asked how long he intended to stay at Anfield, he replied 'at least until the end of the season', despite the Spaniard having a six-year contract.

And Reina, one of Liverpool's three world-class players alongside Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres, intriguingly added he will not return to Spain if he leaves.

Reina's comments will put rival clubs on alert, particularly Arsene Wenger's Arsenal.

Reina, 28, who has not won a trophy since the FA Cup in 2006, said: 'I signed a six-year deal seven months ago and I'm happy at the club, but every footballer wants to be competing for trophies and winning things.

'I will stay at Liverpool at least until the end of the season. I know there are rumours about me leaving but I want to make it clear that I have no intention of going back to Spain.'

Losing Reina would be a huge blow for Roy Hodgson, who has seen his horrendous start at Liverpool improve in recent weeks, with a previously out-of-form Torres netting twice in Sunday's 2-0 win over champions Chelsea.

Reina also hinted that previous manager Rafael Benitez's departure in the summer had not left him overly happy.

'Rafael Benitez was an essential person for this club and the reason I came to Liverpool,' he said.

its in a couple of other newspapers this morning too. he's come out with the usual statements about being happy here - blah, blah, blah - but every player wants to be challenging for trophies and winning things - blah, blah, blah - also that benitez was the reason he came here - blah, blah, blah - and that he wants to see signs of progress - blah, blah, blah.

the owners really need to make a statement of intent in the new year and in the summer, at the very least just to stop the fragile egos of all our multi-millionaire superstars from getting damaged.

I love Pepe and he's just being a cheeky monkey.

Of course he's sending a veiled 'threat' out to the owners, he's a kid who wants to see his christmas presents the night before. John Henry needs to whisper in his ear that cash will be available and the right people bought then Pepe will be happy.

Reina is the exact profile Henry is looking for - young, 6 year contract signed, popular (marketable) and committed so he/we dont want to lose him. Henry will do the right thing.

I imagine Pepe gets on well with Henry's missus as well.... :laugh:

World champions: Liverpool are desperate to keep Fernando Torres (left) and Pepe Reina beyond the summer Though NESV has held initial talks with both Spanish internationals — as well as a number of other senior players — to discuss both their contractual status and any issues they have with the club, it knows that both goalkeeper and striker will need to see tangible evidence of change if they are to remain on Merseyside beyond next summer.

Clauses inserted into Reina and Torres’s contracts last summer would allow the former to leave should an offer of £20 million arrive next year, while it is believed the latter has a gentleman’s agreement that he would be permitted to depart should Liverpool remain out of the Champions League next season.

Sport on television NESV is aware that both players’ disenchantment stems from a year of empty vows on forthcoming investment made by Liverpool’s previous hierarchy. While the consortium’s principal, John W Henry, has made clear he does not intend to keep unhappy players at the club, he is determined to use the next nine months to convince them not to activate those clauses.

That will require substantial investment in the playing resources at Roy Hodgson’s disposal in January — hence the rapid appointment of Damien Comolli as director of football strategy — while NESV’s cause will be helped by the improvement in results in recent weeks.

From the ignominy of sitting in the relegation zone after defeat in the Merseyside derby — a result which seemed to condemn Hodgson to the briefest of reigns at Anfield — Liverpool now stand just five points behind third-placed Arsenal after winning three Premier League games in a row.

“We are now moving in the right direction,” said Torres after the most recent of those successes, against Chelsea. The 26 year-old is keenly aware, though, that Liverpool must maintain those standards in forthcoming games against less illustrious opponents.

“I am really happy with the victory, just like all the fans,” he said. “It was a day we have to enjoy but now we have to be focused on our next game.

“We always play like that against the top teams. When we play Manchester United, Arsenal or Chelsea we often produce a great performance, but now we have to do the same against the teams in the middle of the table. If we do that we will be fighting for big things at the end of the season.”

Who can blame Pepe, an absolute great guy from what i've seen. We say we are the biggest club and most historic but we don't act like one (the previous owners) as compared to the Mancs, Cheslea and Arsenal.

We need to build up the squad which we have stopped doing for the last 2 1/2 seasons and we are where we are because of that reason alone. This is the main reason why I think letting go of Rafa was a mistake. The cause of our downfall disease was not Rafa, the cause of our downfall disease was the previous owners. Rafa's last season was just a symptom of this disease, and yet we killed the messenger and not the source...
