But it is the selling of senior key players like Henry, Veira, etc that caused their downfall. You can't win the league with just youngsters. Hopefully NESV sees this as Arsenal's weakness and not just look at the arsenal model as a business. IMO what the mancs are doing is the right way to go, mixing youngsters with the old guards. I won't be very impressed with NESV if Carra and Gerrard decided to leave the club because they can only get 1 year extension after 30 years of age or something like that.

There are good and bad things with every system. Imo Arsenal benefited from selling Henry as he was hindering their progress at the time. Their failure lies in not buying players to fix their problematic areas. They have not replaced Lehman in goal, and have missed a defender/defensive midfielder.

Imo we made a huge blunder in giving Carragher 90k a week and probably a first team guarantee when he is clearly over the top.

Since he left chelsea because they would not give him 100k a week and joined us for the low low price of 90k a week + a 6 mill sign on fee i'd say he went for the money.

where did the 6m signing fee come from?

Speculation to be honest, I don't think we had that money at the time!

We got it for Benayoun.

who told you that there was a 6mill sign on fee?
ever thought that he left Chelsea because he was not being given a regular starting berth and wanted to play more?
ever thought that he could've accepted Spurs or Arsenal and remained in London instead of moving to Merseyside?

He left chelsea because they refused to give him the new contract he wanted , he didnt join spurs or man utd because they didnt give him the contract he wanted - he joined liverpool because they gave him the contract he wanted .

But if Rafa was still here you'd be far more open to possibility that it was his "world classness" that ultimately swayed Cole's decision.

He demanded 100k a week to sign a new contract and when chelsea would not pay that much for him he wanted to leave. Its that simple.

The sign on fee is the figure quoted in the media. Google it.

Not at all. I have no illusions about why players sign for a club.

:D I'm beginning to get the picure.

Cole like all players wouldn't play for free, and I think it's reasonable to assume we were right up there with the highest offer. That said, Tottenham wanted him bad (Redknapp was quite open about this) and given the fact they have Champions League football to offer, plus Redknapp is one of Coles mentors, and given the fact he could have stayed in London, they were obviously a huge draw.

I don't think we should underestimate the role the manager played in persuading him to go to Liverpool, but probably even more than that the club itself is still a huge draw. This is true despite what some people try and convince us to be the case.

I think it's the latter so far as Cole goes. don't forget he's been on the losing side during 2 European cup Semi-final 2nd legs at Anfield where he got to play in the best atmosphere that any sport in the world can be played in. Listen to the comments he made when he joined the club and then also his comments after the Blackburn game when the Kop woke up for the first time this season. I think he's come because of the stature and tradition of the club, that and the 100k a week but then i think he could have got appox the same amount at Spurs.

All players say how much they love the club, the fans, how happy they are to be here etc when joining a new club. I'll be more surprised if a player doesn't say anything like that. Players are just workers out to get what they can from a short career.

"Loyal players" are often just lucky enough to start playing in a club that is not too big/small for their talent/desire for cash.

That said I don't really mind if Cole went for the money. He will do the same job either way.

Of course they do but Cole repeated those comments again after the win at the weekend and you could see the look on his face when he got an ovation from the crowd when his number was called towards the end of the game. No ones disputing the players go where the money is but I think he could have gone to Spurs and received a similar pay deal + champions league footy but cam to LFC for other reasons. those who say he came here simply because he was offered an extra 10k a week are wide of the mark in my opinion.
