IMO he gave us a very good option and would of played a lot of games and unless we get a replacement for him IMO it's a wrong decision to get rid of him .

He did ok against teams that not the toughest of opponents.
I personally dont think he offered enough at all.
Its annoying seeing a player that cost that much just being loaned out but that's not Roys fault at all. He didnt sign him.
He has taken a look and drawn the same conclusion as Rafa. The lads not going to play and will be on decent wages so ship him out.
You also now wont have the papers questioning why he isnt playing if he is somewhere else.

If we get a good win tonight, Roy is well on his way to settling both his own position, establishling a confident dressing room and addressing fans fears.  Fingers crossed.

Just throwing away a player with great offensive upside and a full preseason under his belt is madness when looking at the alternatives at cm. Masch, Poulsen, Lucas....
dm, dm, dm... so damn negative and will never work.
That is deploying an "afraid to loose mentality"!

There's defensive midfielders, and there's defensive midfielders. Alonso is a defensive midfielder, but he can pass it. Masherano is a defensive midfielder, and he can't. Lucas is kind of a defensive midfielder, and he can't. Poulsen is a defensive midfielder, and he can.

It's about combinations of players. Gerrard and Poulsen in midfield is massively more attacking than the Lucas/Masherano axis. You'll see it this season, with those two we'll be a good team.

Poulson is not in the mould of alonso ie he can pass it . Mascherano is a better passer of the ball than poulson . Poulson does exactly what it say's on the tin , he's a destroyer nothing more nothing less. Very good at it mind you . Lucas has a better range of passing than poulson , although i reckon poulson is better  t breaking up the oppositions attacks . Alonso is cultured and poulson is well a bouncer in comparison.  Roy is going to have to get the mix right in the midfield area. Noone surley should expect him to get it right straight away , it will take time and hopefully the quality of the players he picks will be enough until he's satisfied with his midfield pairing .

That's a good post Igor.

It's a moot point with Masch seemingly leaving the club, but my main problem with Mascherano and Lucas in CM wasn't them playing together, but more the way they played together. I still think Lucas has more to offer in attack, after all he was supposed to be a box to box midfielder when we signed him. Allowing him to push forward more and link-up more with the hole player/ striker/ wide midfielders could still work IMO. Anyway, it looks like he's going to continue as a holding midfielder for the foreseeable future.

Who is the creative midfielder thou 5 cups ? Do you think Hodgson is looking to be solid through the middle and have drive with Gerrard and then look towards Cole to provide the extra imagination to unlock defences ?

Which midfielders do we have who can be creative:

Gerrard
Cole
Babel
Poulson
Maxi
Kuyt
jovanoovich

All can push forward and give us something extra. Add to that the wing backs we have and its a much rmoe attacking teram than previous season(s)

I think it's looked that way so far this season Benny. Lucas/ Poulsen in the holding position, Stevie with more license to get forward and Cole in the hole, linking with Torres, Jova and Kuyt. We've discussed this several times before on Newkit and my issue with this is we loose the Gerrard-Torres partnership and the goals that come with it. The 4-4-2 change for tonight may indicate Hodgson's longer term plan to switch to this formation, which I understand he's favoured in the past. Again, I prefer a 4-5-1 variant, especially away from home, all day long.

It seems we will still have the same old problems mate - cover when we loose either Torres or Gerrard to injury and we are going to rely on Cole to unlock defences . We still lack the same sort of options required .
