Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

If he had his heart set on going there then I suspect a fee would have been agreed and he would have gone. But on balance he concluded that his future lies with Liverpool, and Roy may well have been a factor in that. Certainly, if he had as much faith in Roy as some of the people on here - i.e. that we are destined for mid-table mediocrity - he probably would have handed in a transfer request. But, because there are things happening at the club, and more importanly I think, because he's committed so much to the club over the years, it would overly simplistic and downright silly to make out that he was dying to leave the club, and is ONLY here because no club matched the asking price. Everything from Roy, to the signing of Joe Cole and the commitment of Torres, to the increasing possibility of new ownership all point to a change in the future direction of the club. It's just that Madrid are a Real attraction too, and so is Mourinho. It was probably last chance saloon for a big move so he was bound to give it serious thought. I've no doubt we'll see a revitalised Gerrard this season and the early signs are looking good.

Sums up my thoughts. No doubt we were a bit lucky on the Torres front, he wouldn't have gone to Madrid (I don't believe), the Italian sides can't afford him, and I don't think he would play for another side in England (or at least not this season) therefore Barca probably was the only realistic destination. Gerrard is more complex I think. I was convinced he'd want out based on him turning 30, a lousy World Cup with England and no Champs League football at Anfield this season BUT he didn't take much time coming to a decision to commit did he? Too cut and dry to say Madrid wouldn't pay the money and that was that, if he'd expressed a wish to leave I suspect that price would have come down the closer we got to the transfer window and a deal would have eventually have been done. In short, he could have forced the club's hand. Also, we're overlooking the ownership situation here, i'm sure most of the players (like us) hope and expect there to be viable custodians in place in time for the next transfer window and for things to improve on the financial front. I also wonder if the likes of Gerrard and Carra quite like the idea of playing for an English manager for a change as well. It's not something either player has experienced with the exception of Evans last couple of seasons and a couple of brief stints playing for Keegan/Mclaren in the England set-up.

Lucky on the Torres front? I always thought Torres was quite a loyal person (see Atletico) to give things a go and a chance even.

There is no luck factor involved in Gerrard staying. We all know Mourinho loves Gerrard and he would have taken him without giving a second thought had Gerrard shown slightest of interest in leaving Liverpool.

And you definitely can't question Torres' loyalty. Chelsea and Man City would have blown their whole transfer budget on him had he been interested. He's the one of the best striker in the world without a doubt and every player of that stature wants CL football every season now. Torres didn't run after either CL football (Chelsea) or money (Man City), as he knew last season was just one off and there aren't many clubs in the world which are bigger than us who will love and respect him.

P.S. - 'Benny The Noon', do you have anything good to say about our club, players or manager ? If yes, start a new thread. It will be a pleasure for a change.  :shifty

Go back through all the reports during the summer and you will read that Maureen was interested in Gerrard but Madrid itself believed that he was too old to pay the kind of money that it would of cost to get him . I'm so sorry for forming an opinion of my own and not following the sheep and thinking everything is going to be wonderful now . I have formed my own opinion and so far nothing has been done to change that opinion .

He was going to say that Gerrard had not one but two important offers at his door, but he gave up  :D

I got an idea for you all - concentrate on your own f.ucking opinion and stop hounding me . It's fine to disagree with my opinion but at least debate that against if you can combine your brain cells together to form an opinion of your own . Cut out all the personal cr.ap because your acting like a bunch of f.ucking tw.ats with no interest in the subject and only interested in trying to deride someone just because they don't fall in line .

I'm pro Rafa, but I don't change my opinions about football, and I support the manager at charge. If I didn't argue with the luck of Rafa, I won't argue with the luck of Roy, even the less after only weeks at charge.

Nothing personal.

Sabre my post wasn't aimed at you - was more to do with the two other :censored: who don't seem to have an opinion of their own and are just here it seems to wind people up and deride then for having the cheek to have an original thought .

There is no doubt in my mnd that if Gerrard had have come out and said in the summer that he wanted to leave, there would have been a very long queue of clubs trying to sign him. Okay, we may not have got anywhere near £30 million for him (because of his age), but we would still have got a considerable fee and anyways, he's staying. Because? The future is bright!
