Without jumping the gun it would appear (on the face of it anyway) that all the fingers are pointing towards Gerrard staying & all LFC fans should be delighted if that is the case.

He has a huge part to play on the pitch for the next few years but I also see him playing a massive part off the pitch. He remains a talismanic figure within Anfield and he is heartbeat of the club. He epitomises everything about the history of the club and maybe he sees all the change at the club as a chance to make himself a true legend of the club in more way than one (he has already given his all on the park).

It sounds like Roy is looking for advice and guidance from the skipper. This is either Roy playing to the fans or, as I suspect, giving Gerrard his place and making sure he is aware of his role not only on the park but also off the park. If/when Gerrard comes out and commits himself to the club then that sends a message out the right message to the others in the squad. He can be absolutely key in attracting new players to the club.

Kenny is key to all of this. Gerrard cannot get away from his # 1 role as skipper on the park but I could see Kenny as a close confidant of Gerrards and one who fronts a lot of the teams views to the board and public.

All of the above applies to Carra as well.

Well, maybe I´m less sentimental than you but Gerrard is a weak captain, he has no idea about leadership.

His presence has also allowed the owners/board to ignore the need to evolve the club. Imagine the reorganistation we'd need if he left etc.. and how other less focused players would have to step up to the plate.

SG needs to reinvent himself this season, last year his contribution was weak (not considering the injury etc..) as was his England performance (captain, what captain?) so for me it wouldnt be a massive blow if he bowed out. Put it this way, if he moved, I imagine he'd put more effort into a new club than he will next season for LFC.

As for Carra, the sooner we find a long term replacement the better, the lad is clearly past his prime.

Realise I dont tow the line, but maybe its the benefit of distance.

I'll agree with the comment on SG, not on Carra though.
I don't think SG is a leader on or off the pitch. Carra though, he never was the quickest, but he bounced back from a few dodgy performances at the start of the season and played pretty well after that. He's not a top drawer defender, but there's more of a leader in him than in SG, IMO....

He's definately not the player he was a couple of years ago for me. That's natural though, physically he won't be quite the same specimen. To quote yourself he has simply been the "Roy of the Rovers" for Liverpool over the last decade or so and it isn't nice to watch him drop off the pace, even if it is a little.

I'd like him to drop back into central midfield personally I think that is his best position anyhow. But it's typical of Gerrard to be shifted around from position to position such is his talent.

I disagree about Gerrard not being a good captain.

how many times did he stand up and score a cracker with moments to go in a game?
He was very instrumental the CL in 2005 and the FA cup in 2006.

I agree that he looked bad last season. But maybe a new manager and new ideas might bring the best out of him. And lets remember that he is 30 now.

If he had better players around him he would be playing better himself. Look at fat frank, he is 31 and he had a good season last season, scored quite a few too. Stevie has to worry about tracking back half the time when he is not trying to go forward.

He has to drop further back to try and get the ball.
Its upset me so much watching Xabi at this WC. For me, he was one of the best players of the competition.

We suffered so much without his passing.

Liverpool Ready to Accept £60m Real Madrid Bid for Steven Gerrard and Insua and Lucas Head for Anfield Exit

Anfield side apparently put price on skipper’s head, will the Spanish giants go ahead and make large offer?

Real Madrid’s transfer consultant Ernesto Bronzetti claims they have been told Steven Gerrard would cost them £60m to buy from Liverpool.

The good news is that Real president Florentino Perez has been put off by that asking price, especially given the England captain’s age.

“The president does not agree with Gerrard because he is 30 and Perez doesn’t want to know,” said Bronzetti. “Plus Liverpool asked for €70million (£60million).”

The worrying news is that it again appears then that Liverpool are open to bids for their influential captain.

It also emerged over the weekend that Liverpool have been in talks with Fiorentina over the sale of left back Emiliano Insua prior to Roy Hodgson’s appointment, and another report suggesting Palermo have held talks similarly for midfielder Lucas Leiva.

If all of this is true then it’s more than a tad worrying. Whilst clearly the asking price could be deemed inflated one wonders why Liverpool are even putting a price on Steven Gerrard’s head because if they are then it may well encourage our captain to consider his options because he may feel that the club is looking to cash in on his services.

This whole situation reminds a little of what happened to Kaka and AC Milan. After years of loyal service the Brazilian attacker found himself the target of a great deal of speculation and was continually linked with a move to Real Madrid. The player himself said very little about it and in fact seemed to be happy to continue at the San Siro but the cash strapped club, poorly run by Silvio Berlusconi, decided to put a wild valuation on the player, hoping to either cash in or scare off interest. The problem was that the La Liga giants were more than happy to pay up and Kaka felt that as the club had apparently stated their intentions by not making it clear he was not for sale he may as well leave the club.

Hopefully we can instead put out a statement similar to the one that Arsenal made about Cesc Fabregas, where the north London side made it clear that NO offer would be accepted for the Emirates captain.

Less worrying perhaps is the talk of a Lucas Leiva exit. The Brazilian definitely improved last season but is still in my view not good enough to play for a club hoping to play Champions League football as well as looking to become genuine title chasers.

Emiliano Insua is a different kettle of fish though. The Argentine has potential and we really should look to harness it rather than looking to offload him to the Serie A side.

If we've put a price of 60 million quid on his head and intend sticking to it, much like the 100 million quid on Torres's head we're effectively saying he isn't for sale. Whether we stick to the prices or not is obviously a different matter.
