THE MICHAEL OWEN THREAD - all owen talk here from now on please

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby azriahmad » Wed Aug 17, 2005 4:33 am

Guys, anyone read this article in the Guardian yet? It's about Milan Baros probably going to Villa and Owen possibly coming back. The thing that makes me wonder is that this article claims that Real Madrid actually still owe Liverpool almost half of the Owen transfer (the cash portion anyway) until today. Makes you wonder, they're so ahead in commercialisation than other clubs (or so their President claims) and is the touted to have recorded the largest turnover of any football club, why would we still let them owe us for on a transfer done more then 1 year ago?

If true, very bad way of conducting business...

Here's the article.
Villa deal for Baros frees Liverpool to pursue Owen return
By Andy Hunter
Published: 16 August 2005
Liverpool are close to commencing the next stage of Rafael Benitez's rebuilding programme - a stage that includes Michael Owen - following Milan Baros' admission last night that he has agreed personal terms on a £6.5m transfer to Aston Villa.

Anfield officials are in the process of finalising a transfer offer that will tempt Real Madrid to part with Owen without impinging on the finances Benitez has designated for a new central defender and right-sided midfielder. At present, Liverpool cannot meet Madrid's asking price, believed to be in the region of £14m, but as they are still owed almost half of Owen's original £8m transfer fee by the Spanish club, they have more leeway than previously thought.

Liverpool will only move for the 25-year-old once a member of their existing strike force has left the club, and that obstacle should be removed later this week when Baros returns from international duty with the Czech Republic. Though Lyon's manager Gérard Houllier can now revive his interest in Baros armed with £23m from the sale of Michael Essien, having originally balked at Liverpool's £7m asking price, Villa are favourites for his signature following an improved offer of around £6.5m last Friday.

Baros revealed: "Everything leads me to believe there is nothing for it but to say my goodbyes to Liverpool. Villa have increased their offer and we have come to a financial agreement. That doesn't mean the deal is complete, but Villa are a quality club and I don't consider it a backward step at all. My situation will be better there."

Liverpool will reinvest Baros' transfer fee immediately, although not necessarily on Owen, as negotiations with Madrid could drag on towards the end of the transfer window. Steven Gerrard, however, believes Liverpool cannot allow Owen to return to any other Premiership club, with Newcastle also chasing his signature.

"Everyone at the club would love him back," Gerrard said. "Obviously, it's up to Real Madrid, but when I see Michael in the England squad this week I won't even have to ask him where he'd like to be in a few weeks. Could you imagine him coming back to Anfield and scoring against us for another club? It would be a nightmare."

Apart from Chelsea I don't think any club pays all the money up front and in some cases I think the fee is payed via payments.

You mean "instalments", A.B.

Yes, a lot of clubs would pay via instalments or structure the payments in such a way that the receivables are base fee plus appearance and success-related increments.

However, the 8 million for Owen is not such a gigantic amount that we should allow them to pay over more than a 1 year period, and surely not to a big club like Real Madrid. I remembered that Lazio still owed the Buccaneers some 10 million out of the total 16 million transfer fee for Jaap Stam a couple of years after his transfer.

Just read that somewhere Rafa had offered Cisse to Lyon and Nando to Villa previously in separate occassion. If this is true, Rafa maybe willing to sell any of the big three but most likely Baros is the first to go. If Owen comes back, do you think Rafa will start him ahead of Crouch??

Great. We're doing cartwheels about taking back a player who won nothing of note with while he played for us, won a Champions league without him, and a player the Manc scum dont consider good enough to play alongside Rooney and Van Nistelrooy.

We're thinking with our heart not our heads. Michael is a overknown commidity in the english league. The top defenders and keepers have been playing against him for so long they know his every move.

If we had 12m to spend, I would have preferred someone like Kuyt to join us, not someone opposition defenders know all about.

Your gona get a flogging on here saying gibberish like this,

F.A Cup
UEFA Cup
Worthington Cup
Super Cup
Charity Shield

And yes, he played a huge role in making sure we got into 4th spot in order for us to even qualify for the Champions League last season.

So when you say that LFC are thinking with our hearts, not heads, take a look at yourself son.

Theres  been plenty of foreign imports who premier league defenders knew sweet FA about it and they still didnt score :censored:
By your logic we should sell our forwards every couple of years because the defenders would have worked them out by then.

Come back Michael

Word on the street in Italy is that Roma have agreed terms with Madrid over Owen, they need a replacement as Cassano is leaving shortly. Dacourt might be part of the deal as Madrid wouldnt mind defensive options.

It is said to be around 14M, much more than Liverpool are willing to pay.

Aulas said  "If you ask me whether I would be happy to welcome Michael Owen to the club, the answer is yes. Of course I would."

Even Lyon are in for him with Houllier there. And they have just recieved a huge sum of money thanks to us so they will easily out bid you.

But at the end of the day its Owens choice.
