Torres and Gerrard have World Class players who have strong ambitions and want to win trophies, if Liverpool are unable to challenge for top honours can you blame them for looking elsewhere? I'd be more disappointed if Gerrard left because his a Liverpool fan and has been since he was a nipper. Torres not so much, he is a Athletico Madrid fan, but I wouldn't hold it against them. Just like I don't hold McManaman and Owen with contempt. Both players couldn't resist, Real Madrid, a huge club with huge reputation. As for Alonso, he left because Rafa tried to replace him with Gareth Barry, how you can call him a mercenary is beyond me.

I agree with most of what you have said although i think if Torres and Gerrard had a full season (in Torres case) and been on form (in gerrards case) then maybe we would have finished higher up the league. Also i totally disagree about calling Alonso a mercenary, he left because Rafa tried to sell him the season before to get in Barry.

Liverpool fans have enough problems trying to decipher the truth from the never-ending speculation and off-the-record whispering that fills the back pages on a regular basis. Hints are made, but those doing the hinting haven’t the courage to put their names to their suggestions about their enemies. Or perhaps in some cases their contracts prevent them from just coming out with it.

That’s why it’s always good to see some actual quotes. Obviously it doesn’t mean the speaker is being honest but at least we know what the speaker really said.

Except, it seems, when it’s the BBC reporting the quotes. Only they can say why they missed out a vital couple of answers from their exclusive interview with Steven Gerrard, on duty with England but finding himself being asked about his Liverpool future.

Their online report of what Gerrard said in an interview with their senior football correspondent, Ian Dennis, differs in emphasis from what supporters actually heard when it went out on Five Live this afternoon (2:08.26 in).

Of course there’s no saying Gerrard means what he said today, but he certainly seemed very much taken aback when asked if he’d still be at Anfield next season: “What do you mean? Well I’ve got three years left so I will be, yes.”

This wasn’t the sound of someone answering diplomatically; this was the sound of someone who meant it. And perhaps that’s why it was completely dropped from the online report of what he’d said.

The interviewer started out by asking the Reds captain how is season had been so far: “For Liverpool everyone knows – it’s been well documented – it wasn’t good enough,” he said.

Moving to get the interview back to matters relating to the World Cup, Gerrard went on: “As a team and as a squad we’ve underachieved and we’re certainly not happy about it, but now we’re here with England and the training’s started I think it is important to park club issues and focus on the job in hand for England.”

The interviewer was sticking with his Liverpool questions though, asking him if he was personally hampered by injury during the season: “I’ve suffered a few injuries during the season and stuff, and struggled to gain form really quickly after those injuries but I think that’s just searching for excuses really. I think as a whole squad, the whole Liverpool team have underachieved this year.”

Briefly back to England matters and Gerrard was asked how fit he was for forthcoming trip to South Africa: “I’m fine. No problems, really looking forward to the World Cup, excited and hopefully I can remain fit and push on and do well.”

And did he see this as the last chance for the ‘golden generation’? “Maybe it will be,” he said. “For me I’ve got to realise I’m coming up to 30 years of age and these big tournaments come round every four years, so maybe it is going to be my last one, so I have to be conscious of that and try and make the most of it and do well.”

And back to Liverpool. The interviewer asked: “Like four years ago in the build up to the last World Cup there’s speculation about your future, is that a distraction to you?”

A little pause from Gerrard to think about it, suggesting he hadn’t really thought about it until then, before answering:  “Er.. Not really. I think it was [a distraction] four years ago, because I was going back to my hotel room and driving myself mad and stuff but this time round I won’t make the same mistake. What’s important to me now is going to the World Cup and focussing on the World Cup. If people want to speculate about my future, that’s up to them, I can’t control that, I can only control what I am thinking myself and I can guarantee everyone my focus is on doing well for England.”

And on to the questions omitted by the BBC’s written report of the interview: “Where does your future lie?” asked the reporter. “What do you mean?” replied the captain.

“In terms of, you know, will you be at Liverpool next season?” clarified the reporter. “Well I’ve got three years left so I will be. Yes.” replied the Liverpool club captain, without any ambiguity at all.

But it won’t stop the speculation – even though he’s made it clear the speculation can be a distraction. And with senior sources so readily willing to fuel speculation to anyone who’ll listen, Liverpool fans know they’ve got plenty more to sift through yet.

Just watching that Sunday supplement i dont know why im torchering myself watching it but not one word of this was mentioned , Looks like were gonna have to put up with all this sh.ite again in the coming few months, i for one will be absolutly devastated if Steven was to go . but in my heart i believe he will still be our captain next season.

It's unlikely there will be any change in ownership before the start of the season mate. The best we can hope for is for Rafa to be allowed to keep whatever he makes from sales. That should be enough to strengthen the first team enough to push for a top 4 place. As far as strength in depth goes maybe now but seeing as we don't have to worry about CL football next season that's not such a big concern.

If these players were genuine Liverpool die hards wouldn't they stay no matter what?

McManaman made sure he saw out his contract at Anfield just to keep the club waiting and then went off for his dream move to Spain. Owen held out as long as he could for a new contract and then realised when it wasn't going to be what he wanted that he should go while the going was good.

When Ian Rush left for Juventus in 87 it was two years after the move was first mooted and he could have insisted in the summer of 86 that the loan move back to Anfield for a year shouldn't have happened.

Liverpool's fortunes anwyay have centred far too much around Gerrard. When he's on form no one else much gets a look in when he's not it's the rest of the team's fault things go wrong. The same can be said of Torres. Moving the two on now might not be a bad thing the team will be strengthened by new blood who can move things on to the next era.

Gerrard is not bigger than Liverpool ,twice before he has put the club and fans through torment with his will he or won't he join Chelsea so this time if he is unsure then make your mind up and sharpish , if you want to stay then stay if you want to go then just go and we will move on without you . He says he won't let the speculation harm his chances of doing well for England - well liverpool fans want to know about him and liverpool and don't give a f.uck about England - so if you don't want the speculation to snowball and get in your head then come out and sort it out and end the speculation yourself because the longer it goes on the Liverpool fans who adore and worship you will once again be dragged through the mill by you

the point is that he wouldn't be given all the money to spend, thats the whole point mate. Its not about backing Rafa, its about understanding the circumstances he works in

I acknowledge what you are saying, but times have changed. The days where players are loyalty has been replaced by individual gain i.e money and prestige. Players like Paul Scholes, Raul, Paolo Maldini and Jamie Carragher are rarities these days, so I don't put much stock in the whole concept of loyalty anymore. It is ashame, but that's football unfortunately.

I disagree that Gerrard owes Liverpool everything, it's been cancelled out now, Gerrard has played a major role in all of our triumphs over the past decade and it is grossly unfair to hold the Chelsea saga over his head, that's in the past and all that matters is he remained with the club.

As for Owen and McManaman, they left to further their careers and in McManaman's case that happened and Owen's went downhill, that's the gamble these players take when they leave, but I won't lose sleep over it. Players come and go, no one is larger than the club and as Carragher rightly points out everyone is replaceable.

If Gerrard had the chance to end his career in Madrid who could blame him. What an oppertunity to end your playing days there. I think maybe older fans accept it more, these lads come and go, even the greats. Put it this way if I where Gerrard and looking at the picture in front right now I wouldnt hesitate board the plane to Madrid providing family where up for the shift abroad. Liverpool will go on without him no problem.

Well, I'm glad he has no intention of leaving (phew, wipes the sweat off my browe) we'll need our captain back to his best next season.

I really hope he has a massive impact on the tournament this year.
