What I've only noticed and was taking for granted all this while was how fundamentally sound his game is compared to that of Adam's, Downing's, Henderson's etc. Gerrard is not the most skillful player among world class players. But with one drive forward, with one turn, with one dribble, he can put the opposition team on the backfoot. When Gerrard has the ball, any opposition team is weary. When one of our new players has the ball, the opposition team has no respect.

how about south coast shankly uses his player performance algorithms to come up with an equation that will calculate the exact percentage of influence that each player had at each stage of the competition and then we'll know for sure and can put this silly argument to rest...

@Benny and JD I was talking about the CL Final. Yes didi stabilized the midfield but Gerrard took it by the scruff of the neck and won it. Yes Rafa made the right tactical changes but Gerrard led on the field. If Maradona almost single-handedly won the 1986 world cup, then Steven Gerrard almost single-handedly won the 2005 Champions League Final. :p

also, peeps, try and remember that 'winning it single handedly' is just a turn of phrase that more or less reflects a considerable individual influence on the outcome of a game. just as we have the stanley matthews FA cup final of 1953, we have what is now referred to as the steven gerrard final of 2006 due to his huge influence on the game. the 2005 CL final was similar - every knows that he didn't literaly win it on his own but by god he played a major part in getting there.

Didn't see any player performance 'algorithms'. All I saw were 'averages' :p

Mascherano always wanted away eventually.

Alonso was a direct result of bad man management by Benitez.

But I do echo your sentiments that we would be awesome with that team.

Or an indirect result of Alonso's below par form the previous two seasons :;):  :buttrock

Or a mixture of both on top of the fact that we had no money to sign Barry and keep Alonso.
