RYAN BABEL could become the first high-profile casualty of Rafael Benitez’s summer shake-up after being told he can leave Liverpool.

Babel’s agent Winnie Haatrecht met with the Anfield manager to discuss the player having a more prominent first-team role next season.

Benitez, though, was unable to offer such guarantees and has informed the Holland international he may now speak to other clubs during the transfer window.

That is likely to spark a chase for Babel, who became the third-most expensive player in Liverpool’s history when arriving for £11.5million from Ajax in July 2007.

Liverpool will want to recoup of much as that fee as possible, with Babel likely to command a price tag of around £8m.

Ajax, who yesterday appointed Martin Jol as new coach to succeed Marco van Basten, are thought eager to re-sign Babel but could be put off by the asking price and the player’s wages.

Babel is also certain to attract interest from Italy and Spain, with Benitez open to the possibility of using the 22-year-old as a makeweight to facilitate a possible big-money transfer.

Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa and Arsenal have all been linked with a summer move for Babel and could make any interest formal.

Babel has scored 14 goals in 91 appearances for Liverpool. However, only 42 have been in a starting role – a mere six coming this calendar year – with the Dutchman having completed the full 90 minutes on just 15 occasions.

No surprise that Babel is to be sold. It's shameful that after being here for 2 seasons he still can't manage a full 90 minutes on a consistent basis.

This season he's regressed. His attitude is poor. I think he'd benefit in a team like Arsenal but I don't really care where he goes. We need to raise funds to buy players that can help us win the league. Babel isn't going to do that, he just ends up being carried and we can't afford that.

Yer gotta love this place.

Whilst many are bent over double biting their bones championing the potential of the likes of Lucas and Spearing (FFS ! :p  ) not many seem to be bothered about moving one of our most naturally talented players on to pastures new.

I know he apparently lacks a bit of "bottle" , I know he hasn't lived up to early expectations, I know he might never "make it" wearing our shirt BUT.......... I believe he has more natural talent than 70% of our current squad, it's up to Rafa and co by hook or by crook to get it out of him.

I'd deffo give the fella at least another season and include him in a few more ego boosting starting eleven lineups to at least give him the chance to show us if he's ready to really fight for the shirt.

Spot on Woof.

A few have been saying the likes for a while.

This season i must admit he has frustrated me sometimes
BUT he has it in him all he needs is games and a manager that
has faith in him.

Natural talent??? Maybe he could be a talented sprinter- maybe even a long distant runner. Career in the triatalon def but to play for Liverpool - he hasn't really shown any consistency to backup your point. He has a bad attitude........ Would love to be proved wrong

Explain his bad attitude mate.

I don't think their is a player at Lfc besides Dirk that has not
vented his splean during the past couple of years.

Id be all for giving him another chance but after how many poor performances do you say enough is enough? If he had played really well in afew good games then I would understand but he has looked awful just about all the time. We are after all challanging for the league so should we really be risking including someone who doesn't even play well for us based on a hunch he holds more natural talent than most others in our team? If so then there is 1 word for that - loan.

You dont see Man Utd field anyone they are not sure about. And you didnt see Chelsea field anyone likewise when they did the double so why should we be any different. We will never win the league as long as we keep faith in players who are not good enough. You know had he actually been good enough he may had made the difference for those games Torres and Gerrard was out but he didn't becasue he isn't good enough.

I cant see how people say he has natural ability when the most obvious things he lacks are basic skills such as awareness when passing or keeping hold of the ball. It's no point having more of 1 attribute if you are poor at just about everything else. Technical attributes aside from a mental point of view he doesn't even looks :censored:.d half the time, never chases the ball. He should take a look at his fellow countrymen Dirk. There is a player who gives it his all. If Ryan Babel showed half of the want Dirk showed he would be in the team more often.

Others around him have come from being a fringe player to more or less a 1st team started (Yossi) so it's not like Rafa is being unfair in not playing him. He has given him plenty of chances and he has :censored: them all up.

He either needs a consistant run in the team in the starting line up (6 or 7 games) or get used to being a bit part player and give his all for every minute hes on the pitch.
I dont think Rafa will ever trust him to start for that many games so he should just sell him

he hasnt shown much of his natural talent . When he has come on the pitch he just looks lost . He seems to be like gonzalez - pace but lack of ability and composure on the ball . He cant go past people and only has a right foot . Used to really want him to do well but he just hasnt kicked on . Yossi showed how when you get a chance you grab it . Babel hasnt ever grabbed any chance that has come his way .

As far as I´m concerned there should be a race out the door between Babel and Coco with a 50 quid bonus for whoever goes first.
