@duncanjenkinsFC and a Slovakian newspaper. But it's just a rumour hence the "apparently".

Martin Skrtel: Liverpool FC must show me their ambition matches mine

MARTIN SKRTEL would be happy to turn down interest from Manchester City this summer – provided he gets assurances from new Reds boss Brendan Rodgers that Liverpool FC can match his own personal ambitions.

Champions City are preparing to lure the Slovakian defender to the Etihad Stadium.

The Reds have not received an official bid yet for a man voted Player of the Season at Anfield, but Anfield officials are aware of City’s interest.

The player’s agent Karol Cstonto, however, said: “Some changes have been made at the club and he (Martin Skrtel) wants to know what the aims and ambitions are. And of course, we will discuss the issue of Martin’s new contract.

“Liverpool is a big club and just because they haven’t made the Champions League this year doesn’t mean they would not do it next year.

“There are expectations on both sides, though.”

Roberto Mancini is keen to bolster the champions’ defensive options – with Stefan Savic struggling when called upon last term and AC Milan target Thiago Silva priced at £35m, a fee prohibitive even for City.

Liverpool would be loathe to lose the 27-year-old, but need an indication from Skrtel that he is prepared to commit himself to the club.

Skrtel has two years remaining on his present Anfield contract and was in no hurry to talk about an extension last season.

But that could change, provided Skrtel gets the assurances from manager Rodgers that he is seeking.

To say this rankles me slightly would be understating my disgust ,we have nurtured this fella from a hapless CB into an exceptional CB ,and suddenly
he decides to voice his ambitions are considerably higher than paying back the fans who used to watch his performances through their fingers.

I like Skrtel ,so I will curb my disdain for his agents comments ,but if they have arisen from Martins apparent unrest then I will be extremely disappointed.

Exactly mate ,I think the patience we have shown the big fella when his defending was less than impressive needs a far more resolute stance than the
indecision his agent seems to be echoing on Martins behalf ...

Let's be fair, it was only last season that Martin came into his own, largely down to the fact Agger was alongside him. If Citeh are willing silly money, no doubt his agent will be licking his lips for a Brucie bonus in the bank account, and be pushing the deal through. If so, f.uck em.

Even if there is more than a grain of truth in his apparently itchy feet ,then we should sell him and  play Seb alongside Agger .If he isn't willing to repay
the fans faith by playing his heart out next season in a reds shirt then he wasn't the man we believed him to be .

I seriously hope he signs a new deal because he loves the club ,and not because he thought he warranted assurances of our ambition .

If Skrtel signs a new contract with Liverpool it will be because thats his best
option finincially and then football wise and not because he lives for the club.

Should Man City or any other club offer him a substancial pay increase and/or
champions league football he will be off, guaranteed and we will take the fee
and re invest.

The lad owes us nothing, we pay him and he plays.

Thats football, and people like Gerrard will be the last of a generation that
stays at a club for more than money and ambition.
