MARTIN SKRTEL - Official Thread

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

His reaction after scoring the equaliser was very reminiscent of Steve G in Istanbul. He wasn't interested in celebrating and taking the congratulations from his team mates, he was trying to keep himself and the others firmly focused on the game. He has certainly matured and developed into a top class defender in the past few months and hopefully he's now showing his true form.

Just wanted to note Skrtel, captain for the day, as we finally broke our losing streak. Skrtel has arguably been our player of the year, despite a couple of sub-par performances recently, and it was great that he was able to see his men win. Awesome pass for the first goal too.

It wasn't that long ago that there was an argument on this board about who was the worse CB - Skrtel or Soto. How times have changed!

Hes takes no Sh*t.Was funny seeing him wrestle Hanley. That fcking gimp kean giving out afterwards saying skrtel was holding him down during the goal.

That may have been the case but certainly both were at it.Just look at how they up on the ground in the first place.Hanley drags him to the ground and when there on the ground ,they are both at it.If kean can is whinging about a foul there ,we could as much have had a peno.

Player of the season, and wouldn't be a bad choice as a future captain.

Been awsome this season. It looks to me like he's a much more agile player this year. He's faster, sharper, quicker, more mobile and much more aware. I think this one could be a thumbs up to the coaching team as much as to Martin himself.

skrtel, just like agger, lucas and glen johnson have been here a few years now on the quiet and you sense that the next 3-4 seasons is `their time`. when they all arrived at the club they were sort of in the background as the likes of gerrard, carragher, alonso, mascherano, riise, hyypia etc played the role of leaders and senior players within the group but i sense there`s a subtle changing of the guard at the club. the likes of skrtel, agger, lucas and johnson are all entering their footballing prime and it shows, the self confidence they are getting from their own personal performances is giving them the confidence to get more involved in the leadership of the team. skrtel has really come to the fore, if there is any sign of trouble he`s right over there (as is agger) a la graeme souness and tommy smith, it was no surprise that when evra started jumping around in luis face at old trafford that it was marty and danny right over there first.
there were doubts about johnsons ability as a defender a season or 2 ago but now he`s developed into a excellent player and his defence of luis recently when he said luis was stitched up by evra just shows how confident he is, shrinking violets dont start saying that in the press when the issue seems to be over.
although he was the captain at ajax great players like suarez are leaders anyway by their actions on the pitch and i like the way him and carroll seem to live every minute on the pitch, you can see when they are frustrated and you can see them get angry, they are often in the ref`s face or other players faces and you need that in a team, you`ve got to be a side no one looks forward to playing.
with one or two additions i think we could surprise a few people over the next few seasons, we are starting to get a team together with leaders all over the pitch, you sense the captains armband could go to about half the team (reina, skrtel, agger, johnson, lucas, suarez, gerrard)

Quite possibly our player of the season, too. His improvement along with his partnership with Agger are two of the major plus points to take from this season, IMO. In our two previous seasons we lacked a consistent and reliable partnership at the heart of the defence because Agger was so injury prone and Skrtel so jittery. People rightly questioned whether the two of them could form a partnership, yet when Kenny took charge it was notable that he included Skrtel alongside the likes of Reina, Agger, Carra, Lucas and Gerrard as a player he regarded as being key to our future, something that seemed a little questionable at the time but that now looks justified given the player's subsequent upturn in form. Once prone to mis-timing challenges and making rash interventions that often boggled the mind, this season he's dealt with problems far more decisively, far more effectively and that helps explain why, for the most part this season, our defensive record has been relatively solid. I don't remember him ever being as good in the air as he's been this season and that was one of the major questions hanging over him not so long ago. It was, after all, one of the reasons we signed Kyrgiakos. I don't want to tempt fate but it seems he's finally come good.

Some internet rumours circulating today that Skrtel wants away and is about to
submit a transfer request.

Again, you can never tell with these things ofcourse but its unsual for him to
be talked about at all really, just gets on with his job and attracts little interest in
terms of media or speculation.

Hes one of a few that have done alright for us this year so may be a few top clubs
sniffing around him with good offers.

Have to see if its one the few stories amongst many that is actually has any truth
to it.

skrtel knows he is one of the top men at the club now, there`s no reason for him to leave.
