Fernando Torres hit by bug
Mar 5 2008 EXCLUSIVE by Tony Barrett, Liverpool Echo

FERNANDO TORRES is a major doubt for Liverpool's meeting with West Ham at Anfield tonight, having picked up a bug.

The Reds' top scorer was absent from training yesterday and unless he makes a dramatic recovery is unlikely to be involved against the Hammers.

If, as expected, Torres is unavailable, manager Rafa Benitez is likely to offer a first team recall to Peter Crouch, who has had to settle for a place on the bench in recent weeks.

Should Liverpool win tonight they will go above Everton into fourth place in the Premier League and Benitez today called on his players to take advantage of their game in hand on their Merseyside rivals.

He said: "We have been waiting a long time to play this game and now it is here we must take advantage of it.

"We need to take the confidence from Sunday's win against Bolton into tonight's game.

"But we also have to be careful because West Ham are a good team with good players and we know it will be difficult against them."

Benitez is still smarting from a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Alan Curbishley's side just over a month ago.

On that occasion, Liverpool lost despite having dominated long spells of the game when Mark Noble slotted home an injury time penalty.

"I was disappointed that night," admitted the Reds boss. "We dominated most of the second half and had chances but could not score.

"But that is in the past and tonight we must be positive because we are playing well and creating chances."

Meanwhile, Daniel Agger came through his second reserve team appearance in less than a week unscathed.

The Danish defender played an hour of last night's 1-0 win over Bolton and suffered no ill effects.

Having stepped up his rehabilitation from a metatarsal injury, Agger will now be looking to win his place back in the team.

Reckon thats just a blag, he will probably be being rested and the bug statement is just to save everyone kicking off if we dont play well.

considering this run of games and Torres' bug and Voronin out, there is a real good chance of seeing Nemeth getting a call up (I Hope :D  )  but seriously we need Nando back ASAP

Liverpool Sweat On Torres
Submitted by Niraj Prabhu on Wed, 2008-03-05 16:27.

Liverpool are reportedly sweating on the availability of their top scorer Fernando Torres for tonight’s Premiership meeting with West Ham at Anfield.

The Spain international, who failed to train yesterday, has reportedly picked up a bug and is doubtful for the Reds’ game in hand a victory in which will take Rafa Benitez’s side into the fourth place in the league table.

And with Andriy Voronin also out injured, Benitez will bring Peter Crouch into the starting line-up if Torres is not fit to play.

The Reds have a busy seven days in front of them as after the Hammers clash, they host Newcastle on Saturday, before next week’s Champions League last-16 second leg at Inter Milan.

cue rotation bandwagon even if torres isn't 100% he should play b@llocks.

agree with the shout that nemeth should be getting a shout soon as voronin has less future than beta max dvds, the lad has an eye for goal even when like last night the reserves didn't play at their best

Realistically all news reports asides . Torres will not be starting as rafa is stubborn and would not put him out there , if that is the case i'd go for this line up

                                             Reina

Arbeloa                                   Carra                Skrtel               Aurelio

                                 Alonso            Masch

Yossi                                                                                  Babel

                                Gerrard             Kuyt

I think Crouch will definitely get a start today.  Kuyt is ineffective up front by himself, it would be a disaster like at Blackburn.

Any more team news? If Torres is unavailable, swap him with Kewell. No other changes please

WHAT ??!!

The person who´s got the contract on H&G can take out Kewel on the way home. Lets face it he´d probably get injured running away.

He did wreck havoc in the reserves against Man U, and played the full 90 minutes, scoring a good goal in the 89th.... shows what happens when he plays longer than 60 minutes!

if torres really have a bug do you want him to play here or do you want him to be fit for the inter milan match?
