Liverpool chasing away goals record. They have notched 35 already and now need two more for Premier League best

LIVERPOOL are close to creating a new club scoring record – and Jordan Henderson is itching the fire the Reds into the history books.

Brendan Rodgers’ side have plundered 35 goals away from home in the league this season and can make it their best-ever Premier League tally with two more this weekend.

Liverpool head to Fulham on Sunday as the division’s second most potent attack on the road and with Henderson in decent scoring form.

The former Sunderland man has netted five times in the Premier League since the turn of the year, including two in the 6-0 demolition of Newcastle United earlier this month.

Henderson says extra work after training at Melwood is behind his improving record in front of goal but he believes the whole team have shown a cutting edge this season.

Liverpool struck just 23 times away from Anfield in the league 12 months ago, but the current crop are just two goals away from setting a new landmark.

“It’s always important for midfielders to get goals,” said Henderson.

“Hopefully I can keep working on that and get a few more next season.

“Scoring goals has been brilliant for me on a personal level, but I think the team has definitely progressed throughout the season and we can only get stronger and better and we look forward to next season.”

He added: “We’ve progressed over the season – we’ve played some really good football and won some really good games.

“We’re definitely progressing all the time and we’ll look to continue to do so in the last two games and next season.”

Meanwhile, the row over Liverpool’s end-of-season game in South Africa has rumbled on with a new date for the game mooted.

Brendan Rodgers’ men have lined up a trip to Cape Town for a friendly on May 21, 48 hours after the end of the Premier League campaign.

But the lucrative one-off game – set to land the club £1m – hit a snag when the South African Premier Soccer League (PSL) ruled Ajax Cape Town could not play an international friendly during their domestic season.

Liverpool remain confident that if Ajax are barred from facing them then new opposition will be found.

But an PSL official has confirmed that they would consider an appeal from Ajax for the date of the game to be rearranged.

Tickets had been due to go on sale yesterday but that has been delayed as the row continues.

“We received an application from Ajax Cape Town to play against Liverpool,” PSL CEO Derek Blanckensee said.

“But the PSL has turned down the application. We do not allow for any international friendlies to be played during the season.

“We don’t deal with Liverpool so we have no obligation to communicate the decision with them. We sent a letter to Ajax and we made it a point that they understand the reasons for the cancellation.

“At this point I cannot tell whether the decision will turn out differently if they ask for a new date.  But, we have not received an application with a new date, and we will only consider it if they send it through the right PSL channels.”

It's a meaningless stat at the end of the day - there is no point scoring goals away if we don't get enough points on the board for them to mean something

Until then it's just clutching at straws.

Th stark reality is we are finishing 7th ! Below the BS again and nowhere near competing for the main prizes

i think the goals scored stat is an important one, lets face it if it was the other way around and we posted our worst goal return in the premier league era that stat would be a brickbat getting thrown back at rodgers.
i remember when fowler and collymore were at their peak we seemed to score 2 or 3 goals practically everytime we took to the pitch so to outscore them takes a bit of doing, especially when we are at the start of a rebuilding phase and only had 1 fit striker for half the season.
one thing you have got to give brendan is that he is an attacking coach, he`s not one of these allardyce, hodgson and moyes types who worship the F.A coaching manual like it was the bible.

Just got to hope that BR can tinker things to still get a good output of goals whilst ensuring we tighten up at the back

The tactics and formation have allowed us to be a bit more free flowing going forward but it leaves us exposed at the back

Needs to find the middle
