Torres was probably one of Rafa's biggest risks that worked. Some times they do, some times they don't (Aqualani and Keane). This proves my point, we need to be taking more risks to catch-up to the likes of the top 4. We are getting no where signing "safety" players the Brendan feels comfortable working with. Eventually we will end up with a squad full of these players THAT WON'T TAKE US ANYWHERE.

There is clearly a directive from the owners regarding the profile of players for transfers after the amount of fortune we have squandered under Kenny and Commoli and a reasonable fan understands that under such circumstances if BR would go for talents who he is familiar with. If anything, I lay the blame on the owners. The failure to increase the offer for Dempsey shows that BR has to work within the owner's constraints and could not simply buy the players he wish. So like I said, give him time and judge him after at least one more season.

Yeah the directive is pretty clear it looks like we don't have much money to spend after the royal f**k-ups of last season. I amazed that you are able to see that Kenny squandered money on the likes of Downing, Adam, Henderson and Caroll. Yet

I believe that Brendan Rodgers philosophy of emulating Barcelona's total football can work, I mean Barcelona aren't the first team to play this way and neither was Holland in the 1970's. Argentine club River Plate were playing such football in the 1940's and Hungary were playing such football in the 1950's and should have at least won a World Cup in that decade.

He needs players who can play that way and presently many in our team cannot play that way. Barcelona's total football, tiki-taka football goes back to when Cruijff was their manager back in the mid-1980's. Barcelona's success was around twenty years in the making and if Brendan wants to instill such a philosophy here, then it's going to take many years, not months as frustrating as that is. I think all managers should be backed in their plan to drive their respective clubs forward and I don't believe a current manager should be punished for the mistakes of his predecessors either.

I don't agree as the squad was already in decline when Kenny was appointed to succeed Roy. What happened at the end of season 10-11 was that Kenny got those players to peak the likes of Lucas, Spearing, Kuyt, Maxi and Meireles combined well together. Kenny got the best out of those players and with Suarez coming in we didn't really miss Torres at all at the end of that season. The paradox of this is the idea that Kenny shouldn't have brought anyone in during the summer of 2011 except say Doni and Enrique.

However at the end of 10-11 the team had nothing to lose as the top four was virtually out of reach and after the Europa defeat by Braga there were no trophies left to compete for. The 0-0 at home to Braga illustrated however how weak the squad was though as the away team put men behind the ball which exposed the lack of creativity we had in the squad. With Gerrard injured for that game and Suarez ineligible we looked horribly out of out depth.

In terms of the signings of 2011 I think it became harder to get the team Kenny wanted to get back into the top four immediately once Ashley Young decided he wanted to go to Old Trafford and the likes of Mata didn't want to join us. I suspect that the main error was that there was a belief that Suarez could provide enough inspiration and spark to score enough goals to keep us in contention and that bigger things were expected of Downing. I don't think that the midfield of Lucas, Spearing, Kuyt and Meireles would have carried on where they left off from the end of the previous season even if Adam, Henderson and Downing hadn't joined us. I think we would have finished 7th behind Chelsea and Newcastle with about 60 points even with the team that finished season 10-11.

My feeling is that with the decline from 09-10 onwards even with a few European players brought in during season 11-12 we still wouldn't have got back into the top four. Kenny was not the right man for the long term but he still brought us a winning mentality in the cup competitions and got us back into Europe. It's very much open to question whether Brendan can take us to the next level. I think there will be long term doubts over his future if we're 10th after half the games of next season.

We can criticise the current and previous managers all we like but I don't think we can underestimate the damage that the previous owners did to the club. With the right backing I believe Rafa could have taken us to the very top, Kenny did his best but the new owners tried to impose themselves in something they new nothing about. I think they know they made mistakes and have tried to put things right, they'be brought in their own man and are trying to back him financially as well as sorting out our finances. Only time will tell if he's the right man for the job but we need stability and he needs our support if he's going to do well.
