I really doubt Seville are thinking "damn we could of got £8 million for Alves"

Point taken and it's a fair one. However, I think it's probably fair to say that Birmingham didn't want to sell Pennant but they did. We didn't want to sell Owen but we did. Man City didn't want to sell Sean Wright-Phillips but they did.
Whatever a selling club wants to do, the simple laws of economics come into play eventually.  To this can be added  the fact that a player who has had his head turned can quickly become a shadow of his former self. Given those circumstances, just like it was for us when it seemed Gerrard was destined for Chelsea, it is the task of the selling club to extract as much as possible from the deal.
Now if the buying club is anybody other than Chelsea there is a tipping point which they will not go beyond. In the case of simao and of Alves, their head has been turned and it is my hunch that unless a richer club than Liverpool can be tempted, in time their respective clubs will regret their intransigence. All that said though it is only a hunch and I take your point.

Pennant completes Liverpool move

Birmingham will give Arsenal a quarter of any fee received
Liverpool have signed Jermaine Pennant from Birmingham on a four-year deal.
The clubs have yet to reveal a fee for the 23-year-old, but it is reported to be in the region of £6.2m

The Blues initially turned down a £3.5m offer and negotiated a higher fee as they have to give Pennant's old club Arsenal 25% of the cash received.

Pennant, who joined City last summer after a successful four-month loan spell, is expected to immediately join his new team-mates in Switzerland.

remember when we faced a frustrating match against birmingham last season; this bastard made our defense work extra hard
now he has just being a part of us
so, be happy! :)

I am glad Rafa has finally got a right winger. The jury will be out on Pennant but there is no doubt the guy has ability. Rafa is the man to get the best out of him!

from LFC.tv

Liverpool have today completed the signing of Jermaine Pennant from Birmingham on a four year contract.
The 23 year old right sided midfielder officially put pen to paper on his Anfield deal this afternoon after completing a medical.

He will fly out to Switzerland to join up with his new team-mates at their week long training camp.

Pennant's arrival marks the end of manager Rafael Benitez's long search to bring in a right winger and he could make his Reds' debut against Kaiserslautern this weekend.

Pennant started his career with Notts County before moving to Arsenal for £2 million in 1999. He was unable to hold down a regular place in Arsene Wenger's first team and had loan spells with Watford, Leeds United and Birmingham before completing a permanent move to St Andrews last summer.

He becomes Rafael Benitez's fifth signing of the summer following the arrivals of Craig Bellamy, Mark Gonzalez, Fabio Aurelio and Gabriel Paletta.

Pennant will wear the number 16 shirt at Anfield.

Jermaine PENNANT Honours

wikipedia..

Pennant is of half-Jamaican descent, but has opted to represent England internationally; although he has played at under-21 level, he has found himself behind David Beckham, Aaron Lennon and Shaun Wright-Phillips in the pecking-order for the right-wing position in the senior team.

Playing career
Pennant was signed at the age of 15 by Arsenal from Notts County for £2million, a record fee for a trainee at the time, but failed to fulfil his promise amidst a string of disciplinary problems. These included being sent home by England Under-21 coach Howard Wilkinson for breaking a curfew before an important game against Turkey, and being sent off for punching an opponent in a game against Poland under-21s. He is now too old to be eligible for England U21s, meaning he is unable to add to his tally of 24 caps, the fourth-highest in history.

Pennant's career seemed promising following his move to Arsenal. He scored a hat-trick on his full FA Premier League debut, against Southampton in May 2003; these were also his only Arsenal league goals. However, he did not manage to secure a regular place in the Arsenal side; Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger appeared to have lost patience with Pennant, who had a history of turning up late to training. Pennant spent spells on loan to Watford, Leeds United, and latterly Birmingham City, before signing permanently with the Blues in April 2005. In the 2005–2006 English Premier League Season, Birmingham City were relegated to the Championship (Division 2).
