Benitez lands £6m pennant

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

I am not worried about 6 mill being banded about, you can bet that this is not a straight cash offer, deals for cash do not happen anymore in football (unless you are Chelski of course ) probably the deal is 3-4 mill up front with the rest based on appearances.

The thing about pennant as well he is an 'out and out' right winger, with his remit being to beat players and cross the ball, we have not had that at this club for a fair while now.

he is young and hungry, and no doubt has a massive point to prove, with the guidance of Rafa and the backroom staff, he will be kept on the straight and narrow

Give the boy a chance, Rafa has not let us down yet, I am sure he will not on this one...........................by the way , bit more cash for a top striker? I think so, can't wait

Bring it on.  :buttrock

"He is second class"

"pennant is third choice"

And the likes.

FFS Ronalinho is first choice, but we have not signed him cus:

1) He will cost around £50m, so is over our valuation of the player, which is more like £20m.

2) His Chairman is not willing to let him go.

3) We dont have hte money to meet his clubs valuation of the player.

Therefore we go for someone who we can prise away, will not use all of our budget and who we beleive is priced reasonably in relation to his talent.

Alves at £8m is the man, but at £12m he is definitly not.

Pennant at £6m is the man.

i dont understand!!

greedo, you thickie

:D

Judge, this is a decent discussion, dont ruin it with rubbish mate.

Duff is a much better player than Pennant and has a good heard on his shoulders, cheaper too. Gutted we missed out on him again.

Pennant is okay with a bad attitude. HImself and Bellamy in the same room should be fun :D

Bad business, and speculation about Kuyt worries me too.

Where will Stevie G play if pennant is on the right? Alonso can't be dropped so will Sissoko make way?

Birmingham City winger Jermaine Pennant has completed his medical at Anfield and could be paraded at a brief press conference this afternoon if everything goes as planned.

Arrangements have been pencilled in to present him to the media but the player could instead fly out to Switzerland and be officially paraded at a later date.

Much depends on the availability of Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry.

Whatever happens today, providing he passes his medical, he will join the rest of his new team-mates in Switzerland in time to make his debut against Kaiserslautern at the weekend.

I think we'll go back to the 5 in midfield with stevie g played just behind a lone striker. Sissoko or Alonso cannot make way surely. I'm not a fan of 4-5-1 though as the striker often gets isolated. Rafa will have a plan, he always does.

At the end of the day, some fans live in cloud cuckoo land and think that just because we won the CL we should all of a sudden be splashing out millions and millions on players all of a sudden. At the end of the day, even at £12m, there was no guarantee that Alves was going to be a hit anyway, and it was certainly not a risk that Rafa was willing to take.

If we wanted Alves we needed £12M plus say, £50,000 pw for 5 years = £12M = total deal of £24M, not forgetting all the wages already on the clubs books.

pennant was one of the best crosses of the ball in the premeirship last season, im sure this has been mentioned before and in my oppinion is not a point of contention. This is exceptional news for us, cos thats what we've ben lacking on the right, as long as he keeps his nose clean this could be a great signing.

The team now picks itself! our midfield is looking very taysty, with the only doubt lying with the left wing, and if speedy kicks off early in the season it'll be a no-brainer as i think kewell wasnt good enough. (Big niall, i cant believe your even considering the selection of sissoko ahead of gerrard or xabi, he's a squad player, at best)

my only owrry now is, if we buy cameronesi, we are one signing away (i.e Robbie savage) of being the new blackburn (aka, a team full of CUN*S)!!!

Unlike Chelsea, who are reportedly going to offer €100M for Kaka, after spending £30M on Sheva.....

Its a sellers market at the moment, no doubt about it, and nowhere is this more the case than England. Michael Carrick is currently valued at 20 million quid which says it all.

The way forward (if your not the Chavs) is to have the best manager who can get the best out of what he's got, the best scouting system to find the players before your rivals, and the best youth system. Big money transfers of top players from top clubs is a dying trade.

Are we having some server problems today?  Must be the hot weather.  Any chance of getting AirCon in the server room?

I wonder how long it will take Mr Abramovich to get bored with his little pets.

Duff was a better player than Pennant, but has totally stagnated at Chelsea. Cheaper only cus he went to Newcastle, rest assured we would have had to pay twice that.

What Kuyt speculation ?

Are you serious about where will the best midfielder in Europe fits into our team ?

Exactly.

£5m was the price for Newcastle to buy him, a team Chelsea see as having little threat to their superiority at the moment. We'd have had to pay £10m+.

Shaun Wright-Phillips will be allowed to leave them soon aswell, and it won't be to any of their "rivals".

For those moaning about the price from a relegated team, lest we forget we paid Southampton 7mill for Crouchy last summer!  Now, from a pure footballing perspective (off-field problems aside) who would you rather pay that kind of dosh for, Crouch or Pennant?  For me it's Pennant every day and that's not a knock on Crouch at all.  My point is that Rafa has been able to work wonders with Crouch--a lad with, let's be honest, solid but not spectacular footballing talents (as Big Mick has said, he does somethings very well and other things poorly).  If Crouchy's proven to be worth 7 million (and most seemed to agree with that based on St. Mike's thread a while back) than surely Pennant's worth spending around 6 million on?

In terms of footballing talent and raw athleticism Pennant has a lot more to offer.  His off-field antics do give one pause but I'm prepared to chalk it up to youthful indiscretions and will have faith that Rafa, the lads and a last shot at the big time will put him right.  I'm made up with this signing and think that 6 mill is a very good piece of business for a proven Premiership player who can fill our most consistent problem position.  Now, let's get in another striker!
