The signing of Pennant and the failure to sign Alves and Simao before him sends out a clear message to selling clubs. Liverpool won't pay silly money. Similarly to the players concerned, they would do well to look at the example of Victor who could have been playing in red this season and is instead kicking around the mid to lower reaches of the Premiership looking for a club.

Those 2 examples are not great.  Seville didnt want to sell Alves and will be pleased they still have him.  Simao was also someone who Benfica didnt need to sell and its only now due to some sort of bustup the situation has changed.

I really doubt Seville are thinking "damn we could of got £8 million for Alves"

Again Feynoord dont want to sell Kuyt and will be quite content for him to be playing their next season so have no reason to lower their valuation.

Oh and pennant could really be seen as rafa paying over the odds because is he really worth 7mil, im not sure about that, then again there is a lot of paying over the odds for players going on so im not having a go at rafa. I dont think Pennant is really worth £6+ million but am not disappointed we have paid this amount.  Sometimes you have to bite the bullet and pay the going rate if the club doesnt need to sell.  I think the reluctance to pay certain amounts is more down to the fact that the funds are very limited.
