Top 4 Points Tracker

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby jacdaniel » Sat Aug 27, 2016 3:27 pm

To finish top 4, generally speaking you need to achieve about 4 points from every 2 games.  If you achieve that you will finish the season with 76 points and would likely finish inside the top 4.

Using that logic, we are currently off target after the opening games.  While this might be a concern, we have to take into consideration that we have played 3 away games and 2 of those were against "Big" clubs.  That means that later in the season we should have a bit of an advantage with more home games to play.

Should we beat Leicester at Anfield, we would have 7 points after 4 games and would be very close to meeting that target.  (Albeit with another very tricky away game to Chelsea afterwards).

I'd like to start updating this thread after every second game to see how we are doing points wise.  I'll start after the Leicester game, then game 6, game 8 and so on.
It could be good to track how we are doing just in terms of points.  It might allow us to see how much ground we need to make up after we get through this horrible set of opening fixtures.

Good idea mate.
As you say we look a bit light points wise atm but we have played both Arsenal and Spurs away, if we could have just beaten Burnley we'd be on 7 points from 9 now which would have been a fantastic start given all our games have been away from home.

When Klopp won the title with Dortmund (first time I think) they lost 3 of the first 6 league games, but didn't lose another league game that season.

Not saying we will do that but perhaps an indicator that Klopp teams start slowly and cohesion and results improve as the season goes on. We'll see.

Im confident in Klopp and confident we will finish 4th. Long way to go yet but we will get a positive result at the end of the season.

By the way good thread mate.

If we beat Leicester at home this weekend then we'll only be 1 point behind our target, given who we will have played that will be really good going.

I agree to get 7 points against 3 teams that finished in the top 3 last season and Burnley would not be bad going. The only disappointing thing is we lost 3 points to a team we should have comfortably beat.. and to see how badly we failed to break them down has left loads of question marks.

Yeah true, hopefully it was just a freak result though. They only had 19% possession on the day which is the lowest possession percentage of any winning side since Opta starting collecting stats in 2003-04 so maybe that result did have a touch of the freakish about it. Giving away a goal through a defensive error in the first minute isn't normal either even for a defence like ours.
I guess we'll only really find out if that Burnley game was a genuine slip up or a worrying trend when we play 3 or 4 of those mid table teams on the bounce.

I'm looking at the points situation a bit differently ,it's how much we "deserved" to gain in that specific game...So we should have Won against Spurs and Arsenal and we deserved to lose against Burnley ,so we are basically -2 compared to our game performance which is bad...(For now).

If we'd got the 3 point (we deserved) against Spuds then we'd be joined 2nd. Not that the table means much at this stage. Only after 10-12 matches do you get an idea of where the season will go.
