Ok, the fella hasn't been at his best for quite a while now. Defensively he's never been the best we've had and yet he's still currently England's first choice RB. As an attacking FB, when he's on his game, imo he's up there with some of the best.

If you don't rate him, fair enough, if you think he's overpaid, fair enough but for fks sake, the fella's been here five years and prior to signing turned down an offer from Chelsea to join us instead.

Despite his lack of form I still think he can do the job for us but if he has to go can we at least recognise that he's not actually the worst FB we've ever had.

I think this season he has really struggled woof.
Having said that I thought he played ok Saturday and was a lot more solid.
Southampton pressed us really agressively and he made sure he was always available.
I am hoping the form the season was due to some personal problem that is now resolved or a niggle he might have had. His break from the team and the reasons offered where a little secretive so there may be something in why he has been so bad that we are not aware of.
On the subject of his wages I think it's more the way the club have been with older high earners why alot think he will go. If you look at what happened with Maxi and Dirk I think the writing could be on the wall for Glen.

Alright Ben, good to see yer still posting.

I don't disagree with what you've said, I'm just increasingly p'issed at the manner in which some of us consign a player to the scrap heap.

I don't have a problem with those that think a particular player is not or no longer good enough and we can do better, but I do have a problem with those that p'iss on long serving players that've done a more than decent job during their time with us. If your not happy with him fair enough, express an opinion but at least show some respect.

Reading some of the comments made about Glen Johnson you'd think he was Konchelsky mark 2 !

I've been very critical on Johnson this season, but only because he's been one of my favorite players the last few years, and he just doesn't seem to play with any passion anymore.

I didn't think he was very good against Southampton again to be honest. I don't think many will disagree that he's probably better at the attacking side than the defending, but it seemed almost every time he had the ball he took too long and worked his way into trouble. On many occasions Southampton broke down their right side after Johnson made a bad pass or lost the ball. I rewatched the game last night, and it really stood out to me.

Hate to offer a scape goat tho, especially when we've won, but I've got to say our fullbacks are a must during this summer window.

To be fair to Johnson I think they closed down the passing options very well.
If you watch it again have a look if there was an obvious pass on. Because for me there wasnt.
They did the same at anfield very well.
What we want to do is get our defenders on the ball and draw players in, then we look to pull players out of position once we have got past the strikers.
The problem we had is we struggled to get past the first press (the strikers and Lallana) they had closed all of the options down leaving the defenders with nowhere to go.
It was very impressive from them but takes huge fitness and discipline and in the end they couldnt do it for the whole match.
Johnson always made himself available and did what he could in for me extremely difficult positions.

Woof - agree with every word you say about Glen. Reading some of the posts relating to Johnson and some of our other player you'd think we were fighting fkg relegation and not 2nd in the league with a shout at the title. I know our defence is not quite as good as our outstanding attack and Im sure BR knows that it needs improving. That said it is nothing like as bad as some people are making out. You don't amass 20 points out of the last possible 24 simply because the attack is brilliant. It is a team and yesterday from a defence point of view we looked a lot more solid. Glen was partly responsible for that.
Net Spend Over The Last 5 Years 20/21 to 24/25  (10 years

The thing I felt he was doing wrong is that he was taking way too much time on the ball. If he takes a touch, and passes it then we probably move along, but he kept trying to get the ball and get himself out wide to either make a run down the line, or play the ball up the line. By the time he got over there, all he seemed to have done is alienate himself by closing off any proper passes to the other center backs, and put himself under pressure. I felt the passes were there, he just waited too long and ultimately closed himself off, if that makes any sense.

If you compare him to Flannagan, they probably had a pretty similar number of passes that went to the opposition rather than one of ours, but I feel the difference is that Flanno didn't really lose the ball at his feet from holding it too long like I saw Johnson do on quite a few occasions. When Johnson got himself out of trouble as well, he tended to pass it back to Mingolet who really had no choice but to hoof it forward, which has never been an effective tactic for us.

I really hope BR was drunk when he allegedly said that signing Glen is a priority...Dear me haven't we suffered enough?

I think we can safely remove 'whizz'  from his preferred choice of narcotics.

Last night he appeared back to his mid season worst.

Slow in posession and not knowing what to do when he had the ball.

It's baffling to watch when he is like that, he looks like he hasnt got a clue what he should be doing at times.

I'm running out of patience with him... too inconsistent for an england RB. Miles away from Finnan's consistency... time to find a better replacement...
